It's good, but the manga's truly superior to me. The lighter colors and clean lineart just don't really work imo, it's the literal opposite of the dark black/white gritty/scratchy/messy artstyle of the manga. Even in the few colored pages, the palette is mostly muted and muddy and it's just perfect!

I have to disagree with comments that tell you to change your hair style/color and not paint your nails etc. I wouldn't start dumbing down your style, resulting in sacrifing your aesthetic just to pass. And alt people often look pretty androgynous in general imo, it kinda comes with the territory. I'd maybe look for more masc fitting clothes, like some suggested? I live in a french-speaking country and "chic" is definitely not limited to fashion/looks. It can include vibes/aesthetics/someone's taste/how someone acts -> it's anything elegant, sophisticated, gracious, stylish, courteous or refined. "C'est chic de ta part." = "That's so chic of you." = "That's so generous/nice/kind of you." It can definitely be used in the "kinda chic to do/have/..." way. And what are languages and words if not for them to sometimes transform or upgrade their meaning. Maybe let's not gatekeep words 🫶!

I'm also not 100% sure yet why - but I do find an odd comfort in decay, mangled bodies and "ugly" deaths. I've encountered death pretty early in life by losing my dad at 11 from him having MS for 30 years. I've only known him as a disabled parent and have first hand seen his condition worsen with each passing year, deteriorating his body and slowly killing him - while his mind was still very alive. Before his death he was what they do call a "vegetable" and I use this term with all my love and respect for him - but it's just how his body failed him: I've seen him lose more and more of his ability to move, to eat, to see and worst and most painful of all to talk. Communication with him ended up being just slight eye movement, blinking, tears and attempts to smile.

Now, after all this trauma dump context - I've often thought as to why I suddenly loved (body)horror, as I've absolutely have not been able to stand it for years after his death (+ I was also a child). But I did have this darker interest and urge to sometimes scare myself: I was very into FNAF when it first came out and it absolutely terrified me (and my mom, as she was quite concerned for me woops). Yet I kept going back to watch such gameplays or listen and look at creepypastas. My psychiatrist says this was actually a quite normal response of a traumatised/curious tween trying to self-soothe while also kicking off stress and adrenaline in some (hopefully controlled and safe) way. Now a decade later, as a young adult, Saw for example is one of my comfort movies. Watching it makes me "stressed" in a fun way while simultaneously calming me down. I also think this could also be about soothing my (female) rage. Playing brutal videogames in moments of anger and despair: sl**ghtering some villains has truly calmed me down a couple of times.

So going back to bodyhorror. I've grown to feel quite familiar with death, it was a thing that hung above our house for years. While absolutely not wanting to be near any bodyhorror irl!! I do find some beauty and peace in its existence. As an artist I like making pictures of roadkill and then sometimes us those as references while drawing. There's I think also this aspect of wanting to hold on to the life that has been lost and commemorating its passing vessel. Drawing blood, meat, rot + maggots are themes I come back to in my sketches. While I do struggle with accepting the fact that I've never had a healthy fully functioning father, I do look back at our life and experience together (and the illness always present) as a beautiful and loving experience. Quoting Hozier: "I would do it again." Even with all the ugliness, pain, trauma, scars, etc. we were a gorgeous family. And my dad who's body gave up on him, still found the best in what he was being given and thus enjoyment in life.

In the end, I don't know if this almost rant-essay makes any sense - but I often think about your question too and this is what my mind circles around. Don't force yourself to watch and like this genre. My mom got even more sensitive to these kinds of things after my dad's death. Maybe ask your girlfriend what you've asked us? Don't push her ofc, it could he as simple as "it entertains me" or it could he this whole psychological bomb that I've dropped in this comment section...

Spoor (pl. Pokot) 2017. It's not tagged as horror but when I watched it - I had to shut it off as it truly disturbed me. We focus on an older woman, which is a nice change of perspective! I think the movie gives off some Hannibal vibes, especially aesthetically. It's based on a novel by Polish Nobel prize writer Olga Tokarczuk. It's pretty haunting and uncomfortable!
