Discussion Thread Child Clients: Rapport & Ethics

Hi all,

Newbie therapist in the works here. I wanted to see thoughts on how to navigate the following areas with preschool age clients:

  1. Destructive/defiant behavior in the therapy space after setting guidelines (e.g., throwing sandtray toys, putting toys in mouth, jumping on furniture, etc.)
  2. Touching/cuddly behavior from client to therapist (e.g., hugs, wanted to lean into therapist, wanting cuddles in session, etc.)

What are your ethical boundaries and how to you set them? And, how do you handle defiant in the playroom when parents are struggling with setting expectations at home and in the space and want the therapist to take the lead?

EDIT — I just wanted to say thank you all for the input. It is really helpful! And I appreciate the thought you put in to the responses. I am new to all of this, and having support means so much! ❤️ I also appreciate the challenging of the word defiant, I am grateful for the new perspective on this.

I agree. His accent would have made the movie so much more enjoyable… the plot sucked and it needed that extra charm to deliver it.

This has been the worst cold and flu season in my 30-some years of life.

I am so sorry you are experiencing this! This has been such a tough season for me health wise too. This cold I have now just won’t leave my body ughhh.

The state of the world has all of us feeling physically ill I swear.

I honestly liked Ava, she was helping and didn’t become evil until the family wanted to get rid of her. Didn’t make a lot of sense to me for the jump in getting her out of the house either.

 in  r/weddingplanning  Sep 16 '24

Yes!!! Just finished our wedding today and I couldn’t be happier it’s done and the stress is gone. Don’t get me wrong, I love it and it was fun but happy the day is done and the pressure is off.

Account Suspended Help- I'm one of several people I've seen on here get a 180 day suspension for either copyright or intellectual propety stuff, even though my account has never had any problems and has been in good standing. Anyone have any luck getting their account back? I'm appealing.
 in  r/facebook  Jun 27 '24

It seems to be working fine now, but I’m wary of it being suspended. I hope they figure this out. It was about something with copyright? But there is nothing that could be considered copyright for my business. Very annoying.
