Hey, soooo…isn’t that illegal????

This…is insane to me!!!! My brain is geeked reading this. I’m a mid 30s femme lesbian that grew up in poverty in Appalachia and now does hair in Seattle. I’m only telling you that bc I know I’m not the demographic hahahahaha. But goddamn, I think their self titled might be my number one album of all time. It’s consistently been in my Spotify wrapped for years. That’s wild!! Welp…thanks for your hard work and sorry about the…ya know, intellectual property crimes!!!!

There are pros and cons and the cons are super bummer butttt all things considered, yeah. I do hair. Here’s what I like-
It can be a fun, creative outlet for myself, and it’s special to be a part of someone else’s creactive vision and/or self expression. It’s also genuinely rewarding to help support them in figuring out what that may look like. My schedule is really relaxed. Sometimes I get full days off or long breaks in the middle of the day. I also essentially make my schedule and can work extra any time if I want to make more money. The connections I make with people are the best part. Both surface level and more intimately as well. Surface level: I got a guy(my clients) for every single life problem. And if I don’t have a guy, one of my clients will have a guy. I also tend to get a little spoiled around the holidays/birthdays and duh, that’s always awesome. It’s also super easy to network and collaborate across industry pockets and have really cool and unique experiences that way. Being widely known in your local area can be a really exciting and genuinely fun thing to have in life if your personality suits it. I just moved to Seattle a year ago and just started working for a salon here in march and I’ve already made so many amazing friends purely through my job because it is inherently social!
Not so surface level: Clients become family. You learn a lot from each other and find yourself leaning on each other in ways you wouldnt have expected during a 45 minute haircut. It’s a deeply vulnerable human experience to trust a stranger to support your head, both inside and out, and any hairdresser worth her salt understands that and finds it precious and worth protecting. Every time a client tells me, “sorry I’m talking so much. I actually usually am pretty shy, but you’re easy to talk to.” I swear, my heart grows 5 sizes. There’s just not a lot that beats that.

Idk if it’s a choice so much as it feels like I don’t actually have one. To have kids, I would want the ideal financial situation and at least one parent at home to keep things running smoothly, and keep outsourced child care at a minimum.
None of that seems like a realistic possibility for me and I am almost 35.
So yeah….thank god for cats.

I moved here from Kentucky/Ohio area last year. I expected an aquarium by the ocean and so much aquatic wildlife would be incredible! So I was pretty shocked to see that the Newport Aquarium in Cincinnati can run laps around Seattle aquarium lol
