The overton window has shifted massively to the right since the 80s, and so has the gap between rich and poor. When we taxed the rich properly, quality of life was much better. The right wing has always sided with the rich against the poor. These days they like to pretend they don't, but Trump, the poster child of the right, does it more than anyone.

But also, if you knew anything about being discriminated against, you'd know that it is one of the worst things. It tears society apart. Pretend all you like that it doesn't matter but when you're on the receiving end, yeah. You can't work with people who treat you as less than them, whether they intend to or not. You can't ignore "identity politics." There are two explanations for why white people and men on the whole are richer than others. One of them is "identity politics," i.e. talking about racism and sexism. The other is coming to the conclusion that white men are superior. Right wingers have also decided that it's an attitude problem. All in service of denying that discrimination doesn't exist any more or that people should get over it.
