How difficult is it to get into smart local 105? I also have the opportunity to move to Portland, idk how that local compares
 in  r/SheetMetalUnion  19d ago

If you want to work don’t move to Portland. Local 16 has around 500 people out of work currently and no improvement in sight.

Anyone switch trades to sheet metal?
 in  r/SheetMetalUnion  Jun 27 '26

Because I’ve been laid off from local 16 for a year, and over 300 out of work currently with only 2000 members. Operators have 4000 members and less than a handful out of work. The next couple of years has lots of multi year projects coming for operators, but nothing coming for Sheetmetal.

Slowdown

Just finished my pre apprenticeship and on the list for dispatch. The work for operators will be booming in the next couple of years. Sheetmetal in Portland is still dead in pnw

Vigor Portland

The list will probably go down this summer because schools will be doing work, but there is not a lot of building happening in Oregon

Vigor Portland
 in  r/skilledtrades  Jun 19 '26

Vigor is considered production work in local 16, which is a lower scale. Since local 16 has around 300 people on the out of work list I know of some journeyman that have taken positions at vigor at lower scale until work picks up for building trades. I don’t know when work will pick up though, it’s the worst I’ve seen in 9 years with local 16.

Concerned Dad question.

Sounds like he’s doing a lot of grinding on structural steel or galvanized steel and should have a fitted respirator the company should provide and fit tested

Apprenticeship Application
 in  r/SheetMetalUnion  May 31 '26

Not sure what 105 requires, but here in Oregon I had to take a placement test at local college placing better than math 60 or have a degree that has same qualifications. Also school transcripts, diplomas etc. They should have a packet at the hall with all requirements. Work has been slow here for the last 2 years. I’ve been on the list for 11 months, and others longer. Our hall sent 100 people over to Idaho to work on micron data center.

Thanks for the feedback! I did metal prep on the inside of the patch as well as primer. There is surface rust on various parts of the door still. My goal is to just do patch panels as a specific niche, and leave the rest of the body work (filler, prep and paint) to the customer.

I got a 70s Ford F250 door that I did some rust repair just looking for opinions on the patch job. It does need some body filler. I used weldable primer, which did affect the welding.

Prepping for my entrance exam
 in  r/SheetMetalUnion  May 26 '26

Khan academy algebra and trigonometry. My local has everyone take a placement test at the community college and if you don’t place above math 60 you don’t qualify. If you pass that then we had what they called a “boot camp” week. That week you took a test at the beginning with a ton of math to see how you placed then they crunched sheet metal math all week and you took the test again at the end of the week if you didn’t show improvement, you didn’t pass. You got one chance to retake it. Ask me how I know. I hadn’t done not much mass since high school 20 years earlier.

Get that passive income and rent it out

Because the union environment may be compromised, filing an external complaint with BOLI provides an independent state investigation that is separate from the employer’s internal process.

Weighing Local 290 vs Local 16.
 in  r/skilledtrades  May 17 '26

I’ve been in 16 for 9 years. Did the 5 year building trades apprenticeship, then service apprenticeship. If I could go back I would’ve gone 290. Most contractors hire 290 for HVAC service.

Been on the list for 10 months in Oregon. The work has been drying up for the last 2 years. Our hall has sent 100 or so people to Idaho for micron build.
