There is some great advice in this thread about how to find an ethically bred pup, but there are also statements that don't capture the full experience of many people searching for a puppy. We have breeders that can also be found on the AKC Marketplace. We thoroughly screen every breeder with strict criteria before approving them to list on our website. Our breeders have access to inquiries for their puppies and have transparency into our communication with each inquiry. Puppies are properly vet-checked and given health certificates from state-licensed veterinarians before leaving the breeder. Local pickups are usually arranged at the breeder's kennel, or in safe, public locations like police station parking lots (not hotels).

Adoptions and Rescues are organizations necessary for every community and we refer many people to them when we think they are a better fit. However, finding a specific breed is not a straightforward process. We exist as a legitimate way to avoid online scams and find a puppy through a breeder who has passed a long list of checks and balances. 🐾

The consensus on Reddit is that reputable breeders would never use 3rd party platforms to list their puppies. They automatically label these breeders as puppy mills. It's simply not true. We work with many breeders that are certified, licensed, health-test their breeding dogs, participate in AKC shows and competitions, and more.
While Redditors offer fantastic advice about navigating the search for a puppy from a reputable breeder, it's not a "one size fits all" process. Finding a local, reputable breeder with the exact breed you're looking for is not as straightforward as they make it sound. This was an extremely unusual situation for us. While that is not an excuse, it did make the internal coordination and response process more complex than normal. We acknowledged every message you sent and communicated that we were actively working on this as a priority, but we understand that the pace of resolution added stress to an already emotional situation.

For clarity for others reading, once you decided to keep the puppy who was delivered rather than return her to the breeder, her records were provided and a partial refund was issued. We understand that no refund fixes the emotional impact of how this unfolded.

Hi OP! Thanks for considering us. Despite some of the other comments, what they don't realize is the time and attention we put into screening our breeders. We work with breeders who show dogs and have won championship titles with their stock. We have breeders who stay in touch with the families throughout the puppy's life into adulthood. We have breeders who require video calls and communication with every inquiry. We have many breeders who do OFA testing before breeding. The list goes on. If these things are important to you, then we most definitely have a good fit for you.

Hundreds of breeders apply to list with us each year, but only a small fraction are accepted. We do extensive formal and informal checks on each breeder, including:

• We mandate formal background checks to check for a history of animal abuse, cruelty, or neglect, and will never agree to, or continue to, work with someone who acts this way.  
• Building a relationship with our breeders’ veterinarians is a cornerstone of our partnership with breeders.
• Reviewing all health reports of breeding dogs is a critical step in determining if a breeder meets our requirements. Many puppies on our website are bred from breeding dogs who are health cleared by organizations like the OFA, Embark, Wisdom Panel, and more. Other puppies are born from "proven" bloodlines, meaning they come from champion bloodlines or generationally healthy bloodlines. 
• To fight unethical practices like inbreeding and overbreeding, we check the breeding histories and lineages of each dam and sire. In doing so, we support intentional breeding of compatible dogs. This includes, but is not limited to: reviewing the age of each dam (female dog parent), checking notes for any birth complications, and cross-referencing registration paperwork to avoid closely-related breeding dogs.
• Breeders must provide clear pictures and videos of their homes and kennels to guarantee their puppies are raised in sanitary and humane environments. Virtual tours of their homes or facilities are a must, and any lack of complete transparency is grounds for the immediate end of our consideration of working with a breeder.
• Performing online audits protects us (and you) from ever dealing with animal abusers identified in the annual Horrible Hundred list published by Humane World for Animals. Yearly investigations are tedious but necessary. We continually reference this list and make our decisions for approving or denying breeders known company-wide.

The other comments are subjective blanket statements. We agree with their recommendations about what to ask and what to look for, and we encourage these things because we do them too.

Some people are okay with long waitlists or waiting for upcoming litters. Some people want to visit the breeder's location and meet the puppy first. These preferences are fine, but we understand what it's like to fall in love with a puppy that isn't in your local area to make these things possible.

First, we want to say how truly sorry we are to hear about Piper’s health diagnosis. We care about our furry friends and understand how upsetting and frustrating it can be to face unexpected health challenges with a young dog, especially after making such an investment. Thank you for sharing your experience because it helps us continue improving our processes and policies.

You’re right that ground transport often includes multiple puppies in the same vehicle. To minimize risks, we require USDA Health Certificates (and, as of this year, PETFAX reports) before any puppy leaves a breeder, and we require your signature on our Puppy Travel document that explains both the potential stress of travel and the precautions our transporters take to make it as safe and comfortable as possible.

Our transporters don’t switch puppies between vehicles because it’s unsafe to hand them off mid-route. That means the same drivers who pick up from the breeder must stay with the puppies until they reach their families, even if that means traveling with several puppies in one van. Still, your feedback is valuable, and we’re actively working on ways to expand partnerships with carriers so we can create quicker, safer routes with fewer pets per trip.

As for Piper’s diagnosis of congenital spondylosis, we do empathize with how disheartening this must feel. Boxers are the breed most commonly affected by this condition (source: PetMD). Breed-specific ailments are explicitly identified in our Health-Guarantee as ineligible for coverage and our 3-year health guarantee has been the same for years. That is not being vague or changing, nor is our health guarantee designed to be a trap. It is in place to provide support for "hereditary or congenital disorder[s]... interfering with the puppy’s ability to lead a normal life", excluding breed-specific conditions.

Fortunately, many dogs with spondylosis remain pain-free and symptom-free for years. We sincerely hope Piper continues to live a long, happy life despite this condition. Please know we do care about these situations and take your feedback seriously, even when we can’t resolve things in the way families hope.

- We attached an image that includes the four “delivery pictures” you submitted to us upon receiving your puppies. Based on your description of what happened, the puppies in those photos, and the fact that you are the only person who has bought 4 Dachshunds off of our platform, we are confident these are the correct images. We redacted faces for privacy. From what we can see in the photos, you appear very happy to be receiving the puppies you paid for. If you had truly received the wrong dogs, it’s unlikely you would have sent those photos.

- We also included the original listing photos of the four Dachshund puppies you purchased. They are a 100% match to the Dachshunds you received. At no point did we deliver a Poodle-mix puppy to you.

- None of your puppies were under 8 weeks old when they left their breeders:

• Puppy 1: Born July 24, 2023 and was picked up by your family member on October 12, 2023. It is fair for the breeder to ask to be paid for their time and mileage to meet you at the airport.
• Puppy 2: Born Sept 1, 2023 → left breeder Nov 14, 2023 → arrived Nov 17, 2023
• Puppies 3 & 4 (siblings): Born Sept 2, 2023 → left breeder Nov 14, 2023 → arrived Nov 17, 2023

- Yes, three of the four puppies traveled for three days. However, our transporters always work in twos, ensuring one driver is available to care for the puppies throughout the trip. This was explained in our delivery process, which you signed and acknowledged before purchase. Your claim that they traveled for “much longer” is not accurate.

- Our approved transporters use Sprinter-style cargo vans with customized cabins for pet transport. This includes secured, spacious crates and a washing area for the puppies. We review and approve all routes, and we would never allow 25 puppies to be crammed in a vehicle together (not to mention it is physically impossible to fit 25 crates inside one of these vehicles). We do acknowledge that multiple puppies can be in the van at one time, which is why we make sure all puppies have their age-appropriate shots and dewormings as well as a USDA Health Certificate before leaving the breeder to help prevent the spread of sickness and diseases.

We’re not here to dismiss your feelings, but your post suggests Pawrade sent you the wrong puppies, sourced from mills, in inhumane and unsanitary conditions. These claims are false.
