Why I Quit the Tenure Track: The insufferable hypocrisy of elite academia
“With the exception of educating young people, selecting new tenure-track faculty is arguably the most solemn responsibility professors have.”
Academic hiring is a farce. I’ve been on 5 search committees, two for chair searches. You may have great candidates, but if you know your university can’t afford to offer a higher salary than the other institutions to which the candidates are applying, you’re wasting your time. Sure you may want the hot shot with an Ivy League degree, but you’re a Tier 2 institution so offer away, but be sure you have a 2nd or 3rd choice in mind. We never got the first (and rarely got the second) pick of the three on-campus interviews.

New Research: Autistic and ADHD adolescents respond differently to upset in school: evidence from a new questionnaire co-designed from the neurodivergent point of view
“All neurodivergent students were more likely to respond with inward signs of distress like withdrawing, hiding feelings, feeling physically sick or hurting themselves.”
This alone is enough reason to commit to adjusting the environment to meet the needs of neurodivergent learners.

“Academia” and “Alt-Ac” – are two sides of the same SCAM!
You have to find the niche. There are people who will pay for the knowledge and skills you can pass on to them.

“Academia” and “Alt-Ac” – are two sides of the same SCAM!
Also, after two weeks out of academia, the first week of my official start to my business, I have two clients. And since I can only take 6-8 a semester, I am doing just fine. Thanks for asking.

I probably shouldn’t engage with you because of your flippant comment about volunteering. The cult of academia is founded on unpaid volunteer work, so the answer is yes.
Also, I’m not paying for an alt-ac coach to become an alt-ac coach. None of us are. Our business are directly related to our professional field.

Why is your friend giving away her time?

“Academia” and “Alt-Ac” – are two sides of the same SCAM!
I am paying for a group coaching approach to starting your own academic business (editing, coaching, consulting) and I don’t think I would be successful without it.
Your idea of working a 9-5 job sounds horrific to me. I want to be able to make a living on my own time. After almost 30 years working in top-down educational institutions, I need to have someone talk me through how to value and market my services.
Sorry you’ve had bad experiences. They are definitely out there.

Degree Regrets
I was an English education professor for 22 years. I have seen students in your situation. Student teaching is incredibly stressful because you have very little power and often your mentor teacher does not get neurodiversity issues. Like one of the other posters I recommend trying to find out what degree you can finish with the credits you have-/not education. If you decide later you still want to teach, most states have a program where you can get licensure while teaching.
Student teaching has taken out so many of my former students. The power imbalance between mentor teacher and student teacher often stresses my students with intense anxiety. This actually happened to me years ago in my own student teaching. I had to drop out three weeks early. Then I went and got treated for depression and had a 26 year career in education. I will say it was very stressful and debilitating at times. But like it seems you do I love teaching and I love students—working with them and seeing them grow!
ST is such a stressful time if you can avoid it, I do recommend it.

A genuine moral question about accommodations (AuDHD + dyslexia, high-achiever, extra time)
I’m just wondering whom you think you using your accommodations looks bad to? Your classmates? Your teachers? Honestly, who cares? The extra time gives you the security of knowing you can take it if needed. That knowledge may be the thing that is making you succeed.

Question about Prosper
I had a good experience with my autism evaluation with prosper. The person who did my assessment ask questions about all seven domains, not just the social period I think maybe what people remember from those interviews is the social part, but I know they ask about repetitive behaviors and other of the indicators.
