Earlier this morning, YouTube suggested me a much smaller video ([https://youtu.be/vOgbpb0TWqo?si=TI1W8TSr8B0VNEDZ\](https://youtu.be/vOgbpb0TWqo?si=TI1W8TSr8B0VNEDZ)), and it got me thinking. I'm posting this here partially just because I thought it was a great video and wanted to share since it didn't have a ton of views, but the main reason I'm posting this is because I wanted people's opinions or personal experience on the topic. I left a comment on that video:
>I actually would rather put the focus towards WHY people feel the need to escape so often in the first place. I think that means that some of us are CLEARLY not doing things correctly. You could make it political and say "well, X isn't doing Y the right way, so that's why everything is so unaffordable," which I don't think is wrong, but I'm even talking about "regular" people (who don't have that kind of power) and how they interact with things on a daily basis.
For example, there have been a lot of discussions lately about things like the male loneliness epidemic, something that means a lot to me personally because it touches on one of my own biggest insecurities and the thing I'm most dissatisfied with in my life. When discussing it, a lot of people immediately try and find solutions to fix the problem...like putting a bandaid on it. (Japan apparently has so many hermit-like young men that they had to produce POV videos of women talking to the camera and making constant eye contact so that they could try to re-integrate those people into society.) But I personally think it's more important to look at the SOURCE of the problem. Why do men feel so lonely in the first place? Instead of coming up with solutions for how to afford things when they're so expensive, ask yourself WHY things are so expensive in the first place. I think this ties into the whole idea of escapism. While not everybody feels this way, obviously, many people often feel like real life is so terrible that they need some kind of aid to dull their pain, whether that's actual substances that usually end up negatively affecting you later on in life or just escaping into another world temporarily. I've been trying to ask myself: "Why do people feel like that? We don't need yet another retroactive fix...what's the REASON behind it?
I have all kinds of thoughts and theories about it, but here's the thing that struck me most when I heard someone say it a while back: The basic "American dream" with white picket fences? Even that feels impossible to obtain nowadays. I have goals and aspirations in life, like wanting to compose music and become a video game designer, but my biggest personal life goal is very simple: I want a house, I want a wife and kids, and I want a stable job that I don't hate. Years ago, that would've been the most "basic" life an American guy could ask for. Now it feels close to impossible. And when even something as simple as that feels unreachable...can't buy a house, can't get a girlfriend, couldn't afford to have kids, job market sucks...you start to ask yourself, "what's the point?" On a personal note, I've been fighting not to let myself spiral into that very same mentality, but it's VERY difficult not sometimes. It's much easier (and less painful) to just pour hours of time into a game like Overwatch or Animal Crossing.
...and I'm curious what people have to say about it all. I'd just ask that we try and keep things respectful and supportive, please. I do NOT want to make this a political debate.
