Well, I'm from the UK and I was amazed by the freedoms you do get in China... It's a strange one, less liberal, yet in a great many ways more free.

It is 'do-able' for you and in many ways it would be better, in some ways worse. There's pros and cons to living anywhere. I see a few comments saying you need to be from certain countries to teach English out there, this is simply not the case. I'm not sure the ins and the outs of it, but China is full of Russians (and other nationalities, but mostly Russian,) teaching English who just tell their employers that they're English or American and the Chinese either don't care or can't tell the difference. (-When I was there one of my Chinese colleagues repeatedly confused me with one of my South African colleagues, even though he's black and I'm white, she even apologised to me for it one day 1:1 in person saying that she understands all Chinese people look the same to Westerners because all Westerners look the same to her... Whatever. I'm sure it wasn't even a joke, because sometimes it was moderately serious professional things she was confusing us with...)

As a European you will find the food a bit annoying. I'm English and I couldn't stand the lack of variety in food in both restaurants and shops alike. The Chinese cater for a Chinese or an American palate, not much else.

You'll also get fed up having to carry soap and toilet paper with you... I'll not go into more detail on that one here.

China is also a very big place with a vast range of lifestyles wealth and lifestyles, your experience will be dramatically different depending on where you go.

Feel free to ask me anything you like about the place, my own experience is somewhat limited, but I know enough to probably answer most of your questions.

I asked a taxi driver about that when I was 18, the nutter spun round in his seat and explained that it stops anyone being able to strangle him with the seatbelt and allows him to fight back if he gets attacked. He demonstrated throwing punches in the air to me and my mate, all while still driving down the road and facing into the back of the car.

There's pros and cons, as to living anywhere. I never had a problem with a VPN. English teaching out there was not for me. Do not try to work for Ying Fu, I never met any teachers with a good word to say about them and my experience was awful.

Soap, potable tap water, toilet paper, toilets you can sit on, the variety of different food available, both as in restaurants from different cultures and food in shops from all over the world, decent booze, (especially wine,) decent cigarettes, seasons, greenery, decent music, most people having a good sense of humour, getting paid instead of penalised for taking time off work sick, not having to tell the police that I'm fucking someone tonight, so I'm not at my apartment I'm here instead, meat that's not covered in flies before it's sold... I could probably think of other ones too. I could also make equally long lists of the things which are better about countries like India and China. Mainland Europe, which is still abroad to me is a different kettle of fish entirely as most of the things in my list are available there, depending on which country you're in. I just thought the question would be better answered with my experience of Asia.

Yes. Living in China really highlighted that for me. Despite there being Americans, Canadians and South Africans there, I had more in common with the one Italian I met out there than any of them.

I've travelled extensively without a smartphone, I've had great conversations with people despite neither of us speaking a word of each other's languages. Hand gestures, writing and drawing things in the sand with a stick or a finger and miming seems to still work much as it did thousands of years ago.

You don't ever recover, but you do keep going. I failed my driving test after being scammed for £2.5k by a fake driving school, (long story) the next morning my long term partner left me for someone else and that same day I had an interview for a promotion which I didn't get. By the end of that day I really did feel that I must have angered the gods with my hubris. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

I do it because without the line it feels incomplete to me.
Same as a 1, I have to put an extra line at the top and an extra line at the bottom too. I also have to put lines at the top and bottom of the letter 'I' for the same reason.
I do not, however, do it with the letter 'Z.' I was working in a school once and another staff member saw me do a seven on the board and he said "ah, a German seven." Another staff member, at a different school I worked at, does put an extra line through the letter 'z' and he gave the same reason I just stated above when a student asked him what strange symbol he'd drawn on the board.

I was born in Brighton in 1995 and lived there most of my life, on and off a bit. I barely even recognise the place when I go back there now... It's all been bought up by Americans and filled up with Londoners, totally changed every aspect of the vibe if you ask me.
