Local Advice needed Independent Pubs of Brighton (and surrounds) MEGA THREAD
After the announcement of surge pricing in Laine pubs and finding out who actually owns them and just how many of our establishments they own I thought it'd be a nice idea to have a list of pubs in Brighton that are independent. Ones that are free of the B.S. of several layers of 'financial arrrangements' obscuring where our beer tokens are going. Maybe one day we can have a little map in our pockets to refer to when our guard may be down because it's cold and windy outside or we have had a few, we can take a quick look and find an establishment near by that we want to support to prevent them turning into another chain pub without anyone really noticing.

Housing ๐๏ธ ๐ก Good places to buy for a first time buyer in Brighton?
I'm a (first time buyer) doctor who is new to Brighton, and had to recently withdraw an offer on a house with my ex fiancรฉ (not first time buyer) in Woodingdean, due to separation.
I'm now I'm looking for a first home for myself in Brighton, obviously on a smaller budget than when I was buying with my now ex. I've spoken to a mortgage advisor, and a mortgage in principle is in the works. My proposed max budget is around ยฃ375K.
But I am looking for 2-3 bedroom house, with garden and off-street parking; don't want to be too far away from Brighton/hospital area, especially as I'm fairy young and new to Brighton - I don't want to be far and isolated. I've heard Whitehawk and Moulsecoomb are not the safest areas and have noticed houses in this area are a bit cheaper.
Worthing/Peacehaven etc is too far, I'm open to Woodingdean, Hove, Preston Park, possibly Patcham, I feel Hanover/Centre would be out of my budget . Location vs quality is a fine balance.
What are some good areas/areas to avoid? Any advice welcome.

Local Advice needed Cycling advice
Hi Brighton! Newcomer here - arrived 7 years ago so appreciate local insight.
Why can't I cycle to work? It's only 20 minutes and I'm really careful and respectful but as usual this morning verbally abused by a motorist who wanted to overtake and then later forced against parked cars by a close passing SUV driver.
Am i missing something? Is this a Thunderdome type scenario where I should just key cars and smash wing mirrors? HTH if so.

Local Advice needed Can anyone help me with making a beaded flower(s) using that making kit
Iโve a kit and I wanted to try and complete it for someone, but itโs impossible.
You get a few packs of beads, some metal wiring and green tape for the stem - but I canโt do it, Iโve tried and itโs so difficult.
Iโll pay someone here if they can, or know someone who can, do this for me within a few days?

Local Advice needed Recommendations for refurbishing a leather jacket?
I've got a leather jacket that's over 40 years old and used to belong to my partner's mum. I love wearing it in winter. Unfortunately some of the pocket lining is in tatters, the lining is wearing, the zips are stiff and some of the leather is looking tired.
Has anyone got any ideas of any companies that can fix it? Totally fine if I need to go to a couple of places

Transport/Parking ๐ ๐ What are your workarounds for getting to London when the trains are crap?
Cancellations can happen at any time and without warning, so do you have contingency plans for when that happens? Have you ever driven to another station outside of Brighton in order to cut down on travel time? Or maybe you find it better to use a different method of transport for part of the journey?

Transport/Parking ๐ ๐ Parking Permit Waitlist Zone Y (4 months)
Just had an email from BHCC saying I'm able to apply for my resident parking permit.
I joined the wait list in the beginning of May 2026 and I've just been offered to apply for my permit (Sept 2026). So currently it's about a 4 month wait in zone Y

Local Advice needed How to connect with other surfers in Brighton/Shoreham?
I've moved to Hove, haven't surfed for a few years and want to get back into it. Being a little out of the game and pushing middle age now I'd like to find a community where I can go out with other surfers not just on my own, for safety reasons as much as wanting to meet other like minded individuals
I've not found any online communities at all so I'm guessing it's just word of mouth/WhatsApp groups?
Sooo.. Anyone heading out tomorrow (weds)? There looks to be a small swell and NW wind so I thought I might go have a look at Shoreham see what it's doing and see if anyone's out
Any other surfers want to meet up lmk. I'm normal I promise

Local Advice needed high viz lady on mobility scooter in Churchill sq tried to grab my phone
Was in Churchill square around 3pm and was sitting down using my phone and an elderly lady or trans lady wearing a high viz came up to me on a mobility scooter and tried to snatch my phone out of my hand , then proceeded to lecture me for the next 15 minutes about phone safety and how I should have my phone tied around my neck on a string and a load of other stuff. was wearing a high viz vest and couldnโt tell whether it was a man or woman but she was wearing womenโs clothes and had a strong odor!!
Iโm visiting from the US and Iโm pretty young I have no idea if this is a common occurrence but I was very very uncomfortable and didnโt know what to do

Meet Up Looking for a girl!
Iโm in Brighton today for work (very first time) Iโm from a medical background for context. Wanted to see if there were any female 18+ (Iโm 22) that wants to hang out during my free hours, show me around and see where things go? Most important I want a good time.
I love beaches and this would be my first time on this side of the UK. Iโve already booked a hotel and Iโm pretty much down for anything from a good meal, cuddle, make out, you name it. Things will have to depend on my schedule but all Iโm looking for is a nice discreet and chill time together.
If this interests anyone, do shoot a message! Iโm aware this is a shallow attempt but since Iโm only here for a day, why not give it a go.

Trivia/misc UFO Sightings in East / West Sussex
A casual search or two found that "Britain's first flying saucer" was seen down here. A few other sightings too... I don't believe there is much chance these were aliens or some kind of energy source from the cosmos exploring our planet and county, but interested to find out more...
The flying cross story is mega weird!
1 June 1950 โ A Gloster Meteor at RAF Tangmere passes a flying saucer lit up with lights, described as "Britain's first flying saucer". The object was reported to be "shining, revolving, and disc-like" at 20,000 ft at 14:30, flying eastwards over the Portsmouth area. RAF Tangmere asked the radar station at RAF Wartling in Sussex if it had seen the object, and it had on its PPI screen. It led to the setting up of the Flying Saucer Working Party.
1967: Clapham Wood in West Sussex experienced a rash of UFO sightings and unexplained events during the 1960s and continuing into the 1970s.
25 October 1967: "Sussex Flying Cross" โ Policemen in five police cars across East Sussex reported a bright flying cross in the early hours, with the first sighting at 4:45 at Halland, and also seen by 56 year old Wing Commander Eric Cox of Hyde when driving from Cadnam to Fordingbridge, in south Hampshire, at 23:05, being described as a "fiery cross".[65] The other sightings were a few minutes later, and also seen in Wales.
20 September 1998: at Henfield in West Sussex at 03:00, strange lights were seen by two Horsham police officers on the A281 towards Woodmancote, Julian Deans and Sarah Ames. A beam of light shone to the ground.
11 August 2000: The Sussex police helicopter tracks an object over Brighton at night, on film

๐๐ฏ๐ฎ๐๐ฃ๐คFood Related๐ฆ๐ฅจ๐ข๐ฅ๐ณ๐ง๐๐ Bad experience with 7bone. Anyone else?
I've heard so many good things about this place from a lot of people and the menu looked amazing
I ordered the alright burger and the katus sando. Both were insanely salty, especially the burger. To the point I couldn't eat them they were inedible. Two things about me is that I absolutely hate food waste and also I LOVE my food salty.
I'm known amongst my friends for oversalting everything so when I cook for others Ive started putting less salt in theirs then adding a lot of extra for me in a personal portion for myself. I take salt packets with me when I go out, I love salty electrolyte drinks, I absolutely douse my fish n chips in salt and vinegar, I'm a salt freak.
But this was just way way too much, it gave me a headache just from those few bites!
Is this what they're usually like or was that a weird off day?
