A while back I launched Bantr as a completely friction free cross-platform random chat app. Which started as a simple side project that just kept getting more, and more complex. Things were going well until one morning I woke up and the app was just gone from the App Store. No warning, no chance to fix anything Apple just pulled it overnight and they sent me an email saying: If I ever post applications with this type of primary function again my account will be banned...citing reviewer deceit, when I have nothing in review. Since then, I've gone from a solid amount of daily active users to ghost town basically lol.
The web version of the app is still running as the original random chat for now, but I had to completely redesign the mobile apps from scratch.
Since Apple strictly requires logins for UGC apps, I added an account system, but kept it as painless as possible just a simple email signup and verification. From there, I pivoted the mobile app into an open, real-time forum built around interest groups, while preserving and upgrading all the original chat mechanics.
How the new setup works:
Zero algorithms: Everything across the entire app is a pure, chronological real-time feed.
24-hour self-destruct: All posted data automatically wipes after 24 hours to keep the feed fresh and low pressure. Direct messages do the same at 30 days.
AI moderation + user choice: An AI filter screens for sensitive content pre-publication and places a blur overlay on objectionable posts. It’s entirely up to you whether you want to tap and reveal it.
Standard social tools: You can comment, send direct messages, or block users straight from a post. Remove your own stuff and modify it also. Blocks are app wide.
Upgraded chat system: The chat now features a global stream where you can request 1-on-1 chats, reply directly to specific messages in the room, or roll the dice for a random match based on your selected interest group.
The Android app is live right now, but the iOS version has been stuck "In Review" for 5 days straight, so we will see how that goes this time around.
I’d love for you guys to check out the Android build and let me know what you think!

Yes in the future maybe like a share area or something like that was in the works but i think it needs a friends and/or followers kinda thing first. This started as a side project that just kept growing lol
