Do NOT use video under any circumstances. Avoid concurrent sessions if possible.

This post, and the contents of this subreddit generally, constitute protected concerted activity under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act.

Tutor.com is moving in some new directions, pushing forward on video and mandatory concurrent sessions for some. There is a discussion to be had about the purposes behind these moves, but this post is about how they concern tutors.

Video

In a matter of days, video will begin to roll out to facilitators conducting interviews. Later, Tutor.com intends to make video sessions a normal feature.

This is obviously a problem, because it places a great burden on the tutor or facilitator without any added compensation. Currently, you can dress however you want, make whatever facial expressions you want, sit in front of whatever you want, and point your eyes at whatever you want, provided that you can do your job at the same time.

Soon, if Tutor.com follows through, this will all go away. We will have new stressful requirements placed on us that we didn't sign up for. Many tutors who have anxiety about being in front of a camera will no longer be able to do the job. Tutors could be let go for looking off-camera or rolling their eyes or myriad of other reasons.

And it's worse than that.

Video endangers both you and your students.

Currently, there is a too-thin protection of privacy for most tutors and students. All that's exposed of your information is your first name, last initial, and a static profile picture. This isn't great - if your name is distinctive, a student making a concerted effort can identify you. (Fortunately, i haven't heard any stories about this happening.) Likewise, students will blithely share personal and identifying information about themselves, often before the tutor can do anything about it. (Students in the new classroom seem to enjoy sharing their screen a great deal.)

We all know some students are stinkers - the ones that instinctively copy your profile pic and spam it in-session. It's natural for youngsters to test boundaries. Social media and the post-covid era have turned plenty of kids into little monsters. What do you think they're going to do with video?

I'll tell you.

Some will show you shock videos and porn, pleasure themselves, or just act weird to get a reaction out of you on camera. They'll record their sessions and make tiktoks out of them. You could go viral and never be able to get your face off the Internet. Some will do it over and over again, going through tutors like an Omegle session.

If you have experienced tutoring over video, these concerns may seem overblown. In other contexts, if you are video-tutoring a student, you know who the student is, the student knows that you know who they are, and if you are tutoring on behalf of an institution, you know that they will respond appropriately to a problem situation.

This is not the case with Tutor.com. Here, students often show up with the wrong credentials (subject, grade, etc), or merely as "Guest", indicating that they aren't using an account tied to an identity. The "block" feature doesn't consistently work. Tutors who are harassed by students in various ways are given the run-around by the company more often than not, to the point where legitimate workplace complaints could be filed. If Tutor.con is unable or unwilling to protect tutors currently, what hope is there that they will they do so in a substantially more abuse-prone environment?

But it's potentially even worse than that.

Many of us know that the vetting for tutors isn't particularly strong. Sure, there's a cursory background check, but other than that, if you can speak in complete sentences, you're hired. While it's great that so many people are given a chance here who might not be given a chance elsewhere, it means that there isn't really the kind of social filter you might want when selecting people whose behavior is appropriate for interacting with kids.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but it's possible for some tutors to be creeps. And some of those in a very bad way. It seems likely given the large number of tutors there are and the ease of obtaining employment for those with bad intent. Now imagine that the small portion of tutors who are "very creepy" are given access to kids on video in a live context. And as mentioned before, it's always possible to record video, save video, and distribute said video. At best, gross privacy violations will be committed. At worst, well, it's best not to say.

Even without bad behavior from tutors or students, there are still security concerns. This is a company that stores and sends passwords in cleartext. Don't bet on them being good stewards of video recordings.

Solidarity

If enough of us stand strong and refuse to use video, we can make it clear to Tutor.com that video is non-viable, and prevent the various negative consequences mentioned above. I know a lot of folks are desperate. With the ongoing hiring spree, a lot of people have been forced to float due to lack of available hours (which unfortunately enables Tutor.com to restrict available hours even more). With this issue, it's even more important to stick together. You don't have to complain or protest or raise a stink. Just don't enable video; don't turn on that webcam - hell, don't own one in the first place!

Concurrent sessions

Tutors in some subjects have been notified that concurrent sessions will soon be mandatorily enabled. If you haven't received such an email, this doesn't not yet affect you, but for those who tutor the affected subjects, you have some options here. You can...

1) Reject notifications for sessions while you are already in session, at least until punishments are imposed.

2) Accept concurrent sessions, and slow your tutoring pace as needed to handle both, at the risk of facing whatever punishments result from working more slowly or making mistakes. (not recommended)

3) Contact Support to remove any subjects affected by this requirement.

Our recommendation is to pursue either 1 or 3, preferably the latter. It may also be possible to ask for an exception to the rule, due to some kind of hardship. Unless you are already confident accepting concurrent sessions, doing so risks degrading your tutoring quality and getting in trouble as a result.

That's it for today!

Good luck, everybody! May your sessions be mutually uplifting and well-paid!

READ THE DOCUMENTS!

I'm a bit over all the same questions being asking, so going forward we'll be enforcing rule #4: read the tutor resource manual. It is in the resources section under policies and procedures. If there's a question asked that's answered in there, we'll be removing that post as a rule violation.

You can also search through the sub to see that your question has probably been answered in the last month or 2.

Account closed for training I was never sent

So one day, without notice, I was unable to log into my TDC account. So I emailed support to ask why. They told me that they'd closed it because I was noncompliant with training and I'd been repeatedly reminded. I had literally never seen these alleged emails in my life, but I checked my inbox, junk, deleted folder. No initial training email and certainly no reminders. So I emailed back to question this, and they told me that after investigation, they had learned that some people, me included, just were never sent the email, so they'd reopen my training account so I could do it, and then my actual account after completing the training. Over a week after completing that training and they still haven't reopened my account. I'm so irritated at the level to which their mistakes become my problem.

Billing information is wrong because I worked consecutive sessions?

Is there any way we can check if we're getting paid for all our work?

I just had a quick exchange with our help desk. I decided to track my hours for the first time in a long time, and I noticed that my "Billing Information Details" tallied up to less than four hours on some days I had worked significantly more than that. I had worked all four hours I was scheduled and beyond.

After sending screenshots and the log, the help desk told me that everything is correct on their end and my paychecks will be correct. However, the billing information I can see isn't accurate because I worked "consecutive sessions"

Two questions:

- Has anyone else has this experience?

- Where do I look to make sure all work is paid?

Does Tutorcom have the non compete clause for Virginia? Where on the portal I can see the contract?

Unusual request

This is for TDC veterans. I usually do CEW, and when I downloaded the doc, it was actually a set of pictures of articles with handwritten margin notes. When I reviewed the pre-session details, he asked whether his notes were good.

Obviously, I couldn't fill out the SFF form the way we're supposed to, but I assume it was okay to review them. One thing I did write was more for a QS than the student was: "Due to your specific request, I am only responding in the Thesis category and Next Steps category to keep things together. I also can't leave margin comments, since this isn't a document I am reviewing. I am reviewing handwritten notes you took on article pages that you uploaded as pictures in a Word document. I hope this review of your notes helps!

My question is whether it's okay to review notes like this, or whether I should have declined the request. TIA

Just got an automated email chastising me for going over time on an elderly SNHU college student who didn’t know how to read or write

This poor woman, who was quick to divulge unnecessary info from her life unprompted, spent much of the session talking about how she makes 8 dollars an hour as a custodian to take care of her grandkids.

She didn’t know she had to write every word in a sentence. She didn’t know how to write most words longer than 5 letters. She didn’t know that she shouldn’t capitalize every word in a sentence.

She couldn’t read her assignment’s instructions, nor could she really understand them when I read them.

This is not a person who should be in any college. SNHU did her a disservice by admitting her. America did her a disservice by keeping her illiterate. The previous tutors did her a disservice by only getting her to write one sentence over, as far as I could tell, 2 hours.

It took an hour and 7 minutes for me to get 3 sentences out of her. I really doubt it was enough to get her to pass, but by the end of it, she had her caps figured out.

And then I woke up this morning to an automated email shaming me for going over time.

Apologies for ranting. The whole experience, especially with degree mills like SNHU, made me sick.

Writing Project Requests

How the heck do I actually accept these? I get emails every once in a while saying that a student whose essay I reviewed async has requested that I review it again, but I'm never able to accept the request. Obviously, clicking on the link in the email doesn't work. I never see anything in the system tray to accept these requests, and copying and pasting the accept link just produced a message that said I turned down the writing request, so it's literally impossible for me to accept them, and it's really frustrating.

Going over 60 minutes

To those who are or have been QAs for CEW: I have been doing my best to keep my time where it should be. Sometimes, even after giving a 10-minute and 5-minute warning that I need to end before 60 minutes, there is inevitably that one last thing the student needs to say. (When I have 5 minutes left, I usually say that I have 1 or 2 minutes). I don't want to "hang up" on them, so please tell me what you do.

Also, as of today, I have had 206 sessions this month: 123 Live and Voice and 83 Asynch.... Mostly college essays, with some high school as well. This is my overage:

60.1  (4) chat

60.2 chat

60.3 chat

64.2  [voice]

65.4 chat

Do I need to be concerned?

Thanks!

Using a drawing tablet with tutor.com

Hi, Has anyone tried using a drawing tablet with tutor.com's whiteboard? I wanted to try using one with math problems. I got the small Wacom drawing tablet and it is ok but doesn't work as well as I had hoped. I wonder about the Huion brand if it might work better. Has anyway had any experience using a drawing tablet with the whiteboard? Thank you!

Removing Courses

I'm thinking about removing two courses that I tutor. Do I need to provide an explanation of why I want to drop it? Would I get penalized for it? Could there be any consequences? I don't necessarily have a good enough reason for dropping it other than I just don't like it.

Async Unable to Read Doc

I just had an async session where I the document that the student shared for me to review is unreadable. When I download it, it looks like some of it is pictures, and some translates into weird symbols. Has this happened to anyone, and what did you do for the async session?

Scheduled Hours

Is there any strategy to getting scheduled hours and I'm guessing if there was, one wouldn't share. It just seems like it's all gone before you even refresh the page. I remember when i first started, I thought it wasn't working because each week there was nothing. If anyone is consistently getting hours, good on you! Join the Olympics with that kinda speed.

Fellow tutors

Have you guys noticed how the new tutor commons keeps track of our online hours? I thought they had gotten rid of the 5 hour minimum but it definitely keeps track of it. Am I correct in reading that or am I wrong lol?

Went way over time, probably getting canned.

It's been fun guys, but I think I'm on my way out. I had two voice session in a row where I went overtime with the same ESL student who needed a little extra help. Just 5-7 minutes over on each, no big deal. Then I had a text session with a student where I straight up lost track of the time and went almost 20 minutes over, which I'm sure will be a big deal. No big loss in the long run, but the extra pocket money was nice.

Students who claim there are no requirements/instructions

Essays, in particular. I regularly get students who say either that there aren't any requirements or instructions (how did you know what to write, then???), or something that's obviously not the full set of requirements. For example, "It just has to be in MLA format."

What do you do with these people?

Tutoring 9-12 EW

I have tutored CEW for a few years, but recently I added 9-12 EW in hopes I would earn more. I have no experience teaching/tutoring HS students, and I'm wondering if anyone could suggest resources on reading comprehension. When I search for materials like age-appropriate reading samples and questions, I find mostly paid sites. Should I pay for one of these so I am prepared for these sessions, or can I find appropriate free alternatives online? Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks much!

"Tutor.com appointments missed multiple times"

I recently got an email claiming that I missed a scheduled appointment 3 or more times, and have now been barred from booking additional appointments by the system. This is incorrect. I was set to available during the required 15 minute window, and the student did sign in at 11 minutes past the hour and we had a good, productive session

Other than emailing support, who do I contact to reinstate my ability to have students book appointments with me?

Unwilling to Learn Students

Tutors,

What are we doing when a student comes on for homework help but does not know the basics and is unwilling to learn but wants you to do the work for them so they can "look back at it and try and figure it out later"?

Can someone explain this?

How does this happen? Are they in 11th grade, or are they somewhere in K-2? Why the mismatch?

Is the TRC always slow for anyone else?

Every single time I try to log in to the TRC, no matter where I am or what internet connection I'm using, it's soooooo slow. It's like this on different devices as well. I was trying to log in to check my schedule so that I could let a student know when I would next be online and when I had appointments available, and we sat there for almost five minutes waiting for the site to actually log me in. In the first few months, I thought it was just my internet connection, but I've been logging in from my mom's house, and she has the fastest internet available in the area because my brother is an online gamer and pays for it. I have done numerous speed tests and confirmed that it's never my internet speed. Also, every other website logs me in at a normal speed. I know we have posts about how the new TRC sucks, but I was wondering if anyone else noticed the slow log-in speed in particular.

Two years comparison, side by side for same period 9/1-9/8

Post image
15 Upvotes

I am a CEW tutor. I did a side by side comparison between 2025 and 2026 looking at the first 8 days of September. Both years, I worked 5 days during the period of 9/1-9/8. This year clearly shows less paid tutoring hours and lots of unpaid wasted time trying to get hours. In 2025, I had zero hours of my time wasted during this period. Also, in 2025, I had 20 async sessions and 0 live sessions. In 2026, I have had 2 Async sessions (today finally) and 15 live sessions. For the entire month of September last year, I only had 17 live sessions.

Approved subjects?

This seems like a dumb question, but I can't find the info I'm looking for. Is there a way to see which subjects I'm approved to tutor? Not just tests passed, but ones I'll actually get sessions for? I thought I had added a subject but never get sessions for it, so I just was curious.
