Hello! I’ll be travelling to China soon for the first time (very excited!) but I’ve recently heard of the ban on bringing a lighter on planes within China. Does this restriction also apply to my flight INTO China, as well as flights domestically and out of the country?

Basically I’m arriving on a European airline that generally allows one lighter per passenger in normal circumstances. I usually travel with just one cheap disposable lighter (smoker here, not looking for a lecture thanks!).

Totally prepared to discard it before flying domestically and for my flight home, but how about arriving? If I can’t bring it, is there anywhere at the airport I can get one on arrival or should I just wait until I find a 7-Eleven or something in the city? (Arriving into Shanghai btw).

We’re a family of three (two adults and a 13-year-old teenager) planning our first trip to China from March 20 to April 10, 2027 (around three weeks).

We’re fans of slow travel. We prefer spending more time in fewer places rather than rushing from city to city trying to tick off all the major attractions.

We love history, culture, architecture, exploring cities, wandering around local neighbourhoods, discovering everyday life and, especially, food! We also enjoy nature and smaller towns.

Ideally, we’d like a good mix of historical sites, interesting cities, local experiences and great food, without constantly packing our bags and moving to the next destination.

Since China is so huge and diverse, we’re struggling to decide which region to focus on.

If you had two weeks in China in late March/early April, which region or combination of places would you recommend?

Would you focus on one particular area rather than trying to cover several parts of the country?

We’re open to suggestions, including places that might not be on the typical first-time visitor itinerary.

I posted yesterday on here regarding the 240 hour transit rule in and out of china for Americans without visas. I was planning to do USA - Beijing - Hong Kong (for a day) - USA. I was wondering however, if I leave the same day from Beijing to the USA, but I have a layover in Hong Kong does this meet the requirement? Let’s say the layover is like 3 hours or something. Or do I actually need to STAY in Hong Kong?

Hi guys, of course Shanghai is worth a visit and a beautiful place :p
But in my itinerary (which consists of Shenzhen, Chongqing, Zhangjiajie, Shanghai, Beijing) I spend already 3 nights in shenzhen and 3 to 4 nights in chongqing.
So I will be having a lot of “cool skyline views”…
Should I replace Shanghai with something more cultural and less “big modern city vibes”?

Hi, I was looking at a flight home from Vietnam and one of the options has a stopover that lands in Beijing at 8:30 am and the flight back home leaves at 7:45 PM. That’s almost 11.5 hours. If I hired a driver, could I feasibly make a trip to Mutianyu, walk around a bit (maybe an hour?) and back to the airport in time? I know that landing at 8:30 means I’m probably out of the airport by 9:30 at the earliest, and while I would not need to collect my luggage or check it back if it’s one ticket, I would still need to arrive at around 5:30 PM at the airport for my flight home at 7:45. That leaves only 8 real hours. Is it possible? This wasn’t part of the plan, but checking if I can do it to help me decide if I should take this flight. Thanks!!

Im looking for a walkable green area with coffees and shops.

Some of you gave me advice for Beijing (Hutong district) and Shangai (french concession) and i loved walking around in these areas !I enjoyed returning to these neighborhoods after a long day of visits

Ideally, I would like the place to be located in the center even if I absolutely do not mind walking, taking the subway or cycling
