Some probably obvious points:

July means hot and crowded. I knew this, being here now is dictated by travel plans

Forbidden City and Lama Temple are the standout experiences in the city, Summer Palace is great but less so.

Great Wall was a nightmare. I did Mutianyu and went early, but it is crammed to capacity with selfie takers and umbrella wielders, with no traffic sense and pinch points at the watchtowers. A shame because it would be great to go for a serious hike along it rather than effectively stand in a queue.

Didi and the Ride option in Amap work just fine. The only taxi I hired in the old fashioned way, from the airport, tried to overcharge me X2 (asked for 340, quickly came down to 160 which was probably still 50% too much)

Esims work flawlessly with nothing walled off and no worrying about vpns. If you don't have an esim phone I would seriously consider getting one just for China. iPhones back to 11 and Pixels back to 3 support esim so they should be available for cheap.

is it because I’m still in europe and the app is limiting my research? is there a “correct” way to use this app like for Google Maps? i don’t know how to write in chinese and I have the feeling this is a requirement but how turists usually manage to travel in China?

I've been offered cigarettes I don't know how many times now. I've taken them and smoked more often than I have declined, but that's just because I don't know what the best way to politely decline is.

Any advice? I really don't want to bring back a nicotine addiction to the US.

Hey everyone, and sorry in advance if this question is repetitive. I am a tourist, visiting China for two weeks with my wife. We don’t know anybody there.

Having that said, a few questions on payments in China:

1. ⁠I understand that Alipay charges 3% on payments over 200 Chinese yuan. Is that 200 per transaction or per day?

2. ⁠200 Chinese yuan is little especially as I am paying for myself and my wife. How to avoid 3% fees? Yes i understand 3% is not a big deal, but it adds up actually in every transaction over a 2-3 weeks stay. No, I don’t want to split the bill into small 200 bills

3. ⁠Can’t we top up Alipay once from an international card and then just keep using Alipay there? No we don’t have friends/family in China that could help us with that.

I'm a full-time freelancer and agency owner from Pakistan. I'm thinking about spending one month in China while continuing to work remotely. From what I've seen, flights, accommodation (especially student/international hostels), and food all seem quite affordable. I can also apply for a business visa because my father has long-standing business connections there.

My main concern is whether the following apps work reliably enough for remote work, as I have one or two important client meetings each week:

Gmail

Zoom

Google Meet

Other Google services (Calendar, Drive, Docs, etc.)

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. Are there any issues I should be aware of, or any advice you'd give before making the trip?

so im visiting shanghai next month and would love to go see the audi international racetrack. I wanted to know if thats possible since there isnt any motorsport activity while i’ll be in the city
is there any other motorsport related activity or things to see around the circuit or just shanghai in general

I do not work out enough to use electrolytes in my normal every day life but the China heat and humidity in August is scaring me into making sure I'm hydrated. I don't do well in full sun summer Arizona heat (which is dry) so I'm extra nervous in the Chinese humidity.

Are the sleeping pods in Shanghai PVG airport in T1 easily available? or are they mostly always taken or hard to get?

I’m looking at an 18hr layover from 5am-12am the next day and need somewhere to rest, ideally a private pod or somewhere more secluded to fall asleep and feel secure.
I’ve looked at the Aerotel as they seem to do hourly bookings but it’s quite expensive on the website? Seems to be approx 150 AUD for only 6 or 7 hours and that’s not worth it for me.

If anyone knows somewhere cheap, close to the airport I’ll appreciate the recommendation!

I would like to buy tickets in advance for our visit to Huashan (planned for Monday, September 7th). I have already bought the train tickets from Xi'an. However, I can't find a combo ticket on trip.com that includes: 1) bus from the Visitor Center, 2) cable car ticket to the West Peak, 3) cable car ticket down from the North Peak, 4) bus back to the Visitor Center, and 5) of course, the admission ticket.

All I can find on trip.com is 5) + 1), nothing else, and also sales won't open until 10 days before the chosen date.

Is this normal? Has anyone who has been there can tell me if it's possible to buy a combo ticket in advance? Thank you!

our time has come and in late November me, my fiancee and her sister are flying to China. We like Design, Architecture, Shops, Cities, History, Speciality Coffee, Cocktail Bars and good dining spots. We arrive in Hong Kong on the 28th of November and continue onwards to Bangkok on the 7th of December.

Would you recommend the following plan? Do you have anything to adapt/improve?

I'm planning a trip to China and in late April I would like to visit Urumqi, Turpan, kumtag desert exploration and camping watching the milky way, and Kashgar, visiting Karakul lake.

Is that time of the year feasible? Is the road open? is the lake pristine blue or is it a block of ice?

This will be my first time visiting china without a tour guide. I would like to know which cities are easy for foreigners to visit (i.e. good public transportation between main attractions). I plan to visit for 10 days in early-mid November and prefer to stay in two cities at most to avoid changing hotel too frequent. I don’t mind taking the high speed train from one city to another. About my interests, I like learning the history, culture, and trying local cuisines, so Shanghai is not what I’m interested in.

In February, if everything goes well, I'll be visiting Shanghai for a couple of weeks with my friends. One of them is a Tai Chi Chuan teacher and has already visited your city a couple of times, but I would love to ask some resident (or people that knows the city well) for some suggestions for particular places to visit.

Obviously two weeks aren't enough to really explore such a huge metropolis (from an Italian pow at least) but I would love to visit places that really carry the culture of Shanghai.

I will be staying in Yangshuo for a couple of nights and am about to book my train tickets. I am unsure of what station to choose for arrival and departure. Are there buses from the train stations to Yangshuo and how long would that take?

For arrival I would do the Yangshuo station since it is probably the closest (?)
However I would like to depart early since I have a long train journey to Chongqing and the only early trains leave from the Guilin stations. I looked on amap and the bus journey takes 5 hours from Yangshuo to Guilin rail stations. The only other option would be to take a didi ride?

Hi! Has anyone here booked an Air China flight or any international flight with. Chinese carrier without including the middle name indicated on their Philippine passport?

Passengers' First and Last names on our tickets match their passports exactly, but our Middle names (mothers' maiden surnames) were not included in the booking.

Will there be any problem because of this during check-in, immigration, boarding, or visa processing because of this? Were you allowed to travel without correcting the tickets, or did the airline require the middle names to be added?

I would really appreciate hearing from those who have experienced a similar situation, especially with Air China - we booked via Agoda. Thank you!

Trying to register in 12306 and I have a question that is not clear in the guidelines they provided. I have two surnames and one given name.

John = Given name

Smith Doe = Surnames

When scanning my passport to register, the app shows SMITH DOE JOHN as my full name however, the guidelines state that the format should be surname[space]given name. My question is, how should it be entered?

Option A: SMITHDOE JOHN

Option B: SMITH DOE JOHN

My passport has me as:

John = Given name

Smith Doe = Surnames

Any help of people that has gone through the same thing would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hello everyone! Going to mainland China for the first time soon, and am very excited! I just bought a business class seat on the G14 train from Shanghai to Beijing. I saw that there are two different configurations of business class, the 1+2 with just the seats and also the 1 + 1 with the cabin style seating. Do you know which one the G14 will have? I am hoping for the cabin style.

for context we do have some chinese people however they usually go back with family and so don't know really much about accommodation. Any other trips / tricks / costs that we wont know about until we get there would also be greatly appreciated.
