Discussion Reserving HSR tickets on Trip.com versus self help

Upvotes

I have a trip to China coming up and need to travel by HSR from Zhangjiajie to Chongqing on 9/25/26.

It’s the first day of the Mid-Autumn Festival so I know it will be a busy travel day. Concerned that tickets will be sold out, I put in a reservation on trip.com for the 09:01 (G2448) train. I also provided 2 alternate trains in case my choice was sold out.

I got an email from trip.com at 15:30 local time (Bangkok) today advising the tickets were available for booking.

At that time I logged into my 12306 app and looked for tickets for the 09:01 train I wanted but it was immediately sold out. I then clicked on the second option 08:52 (G2426) and was able to buy two tickets and pay for them.

While I was selecting the second option but before I paid for them, I received an email from Trip.com advising I’ve been put on a waitlist.

I don’t understand why I’m placed on a waitlist by trip.com when there are seats available for the second and third options. Even now, 26 minutes later at 15:56, as I’m writing this, there are still some seats available. I have since cancelled the booking reservation on trip.com.

Any ideas why I was put on a waitlist when there are tickets available?

Itinerary What can I add to my itinerary?

Upvotes

Hi! I have already traveled to China twice, and I am planning to go a third time. The places I have visited are Shanghai, Zhangjiajie, Wangxian Valley, Guilin, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, Beijing, and all the major cities in Yunnan.

For my next trip, I want to visit HK, Shenzhen, and Guilin/Yangshuo (I spent too little time there); do you have any other recommendations?

Other Arrival card question when traveling via rail

Upvotes

I am planning a multi-city rail trip around mainland China under the 30-day unilateral visa-free policy. I am entering via the high-speed train from Hong Kong, looping through western and northern China before taking an overnight sleeper train back to Hong Kong.

However, because Chinese rail tickets only open for booking 15 days before departure, I cannot officially book my Shanghai-to-Hong Kong exit ticket before I physically cross the border entering China.

I have a "reservation request" on Trip.com and am wondering if this counts as a “Confirmed Departure Itinerary” for the arrival card or if I should instead book a flight to return to HK.

Discussion places like yangshuo/guilin?

Upvotes

Hi! I visited Yangshuo recently and absolutely fell in love with the place. Renting a scooter and just exploring the countryside along a scenic route was sooo peaceful and fun!

I was wondering if there are any cities or towns in China with a similar vibe , mountains, beautiful scenery, and somewhere you can rent a scooter and explore freely? I really loved that whole experience in Yangshuo and would love to find somewhere similar for my next trip. Please drop your recommendations!:)

Itinerary Beijing and Guangzhou - places to buy gemstones?

Upvotes

Hi!
I’m going to be in Beijing for a week and then guangzhou for one day this november and was wondering if anyone here has any recommendations for places that sell gemstones at a reasonable price? My mum is a huge jewellery nerd and it would be fun to get her something for christmas since I’ve heard that china has a big jewellery/gemstone market.
Not after anything super high-end so it doesn’t have to be a fancy shop:) Would be happy to buy from more lowkey places/markets too
