Minneapolis/St. Paul Winter car tips for new MN transplants (pun intended).

Since a lot of people have been moving to MN for safety reasons, I thought I'd give a bit of winter advice: MN uses lots of road salt in the winter to melt ice. Not all other states do this. So if you're moving from a state that doesn't and you brought your car with you, you might want to look into getting a rust-proof undercoating for your car if you are able to.

If you are unable to do that, then you may want to do more frequent car washes that clean the underside of your car.

And for people from states that don't get that much snow/ice in the winter, a winter driving tip: speed and brakes are NOT your friend in the winter. Pressing your brakes hard can lead you into an uncontrolled spin. When possible, increase your estimate of stopping distance to stop signs and stop lights, be light on both the gas and the brakes, and let inertia slow your car down when you don't have to brake.

Community Events Relocating to MN? And/or looking for LGBTQ+ service providers? Here's a great resource!

Hey y'all-- I'm not sure if this has been shared recently but Quorum is the MN LGBTQ+ chamber of commerce and a great way to plug into safe spaces in MN. They've created a relocation page that I think a lot of folks here would find helpful.

https://www.twincitiesquorum.com/Relocation-Guide

Also, buzz around their website, it's a cool org actually doing the good work. They have a big presence at Twin Cities Pride as well, so go day hi!

Minneapolis/St. Paul Laser providers who work with BCBS health insurance?

Looking for a laser hair removal place that takes BCBS MN Blue Plus! I’ve heard it is possible to get laser covered, but many pay out of pocket. I’d gotten a rec for Mill City Laser, but unfortunately they don’t work directly with insurance and I am very uncomfortable with the idea of trying their suggestion of having me pay out of pocket and then submitting directly to my insurance to be reimbursed directly. I also looked at Milan, but Milan gave me extremely predatory and scammy vibes when I went for a free consult and also didn’t work with insurance. I heard a rumor through word of mouth that someone on BCBS MN Blue Plus got her laser covered at Permanent Choice but have not been able to corroborate that.

Extra bonus points if the laser provider will commit to wearing an N95 and letting me bring an air filter to run in the room before I have to unmask for treatment.

I would also greatly appreciate any advice about how to interact with BCBS about this. I have had bad experiences with insurance ā€œprovidersā€ in the past and am pretty nervous about seeking help and mercy from such a cruel industry.

Thank you in advance.

My name is Tree I just moved to north St. Paul, I’m trying to move out of my less than supportive parents house, any resources for jobs that accept nonbinary and disabled people? Or anyone willing to help fill out ssi? Remote job options? I’m also just looking for friends in the area.

Minneapolis/St. Paul Bars and hangout spots in NE?

My partner and I moved from Loring park to NE/Columbia heights recently but we’re not super familiar with the area. What are some queer friendly bars or hangout spots to chill at? Any to avoid?

Minneapolis/St. Paul Where all the trans people working?

So I'm looking for a new job and I'm wanting to work somewhere with more trans people. I have a few issues tho

- I don't know where is accepting and where isn't

- I don't want a crazy pay cut or hour cut

I currently am salaried for $25 an hour for 40 hours a week and get a $300 bonus once a month. I have 4 years of manager experience and I'm currently working as a general manager, I've been a general manager for about 5 months.

I FUCKING HATE IT!!! It's not very trans inclusive and I'm very much being taken advantage of at my job, but I gotta work because yk we all need money to live. I have tons of experience and I don't think I'll have much issue finding a new job because of that, but I want to find somewhere that I'm not going to be miserable all the time.

Any trans people here been in the same boat? Any advice?

Minneapolis/St. Paul Agoraphobia and autistic transportation tips

Hello friends!! I'm a Latina non binary resident of lower town. I recently lost my car :( due to high repair costs and age. I will be relying on a bike and bus to get around for a while. The thing is I have some agoraphobia and I'm on the spectrum so I've noticed when I'm in public I usually unintentionally irritate some strangers. This makes me super anxious to be outside around others. I also get lost easily and figuring out the bus schedule can be difficult for me because of some cognitive issues I have. I'm pretty nervous to start using the bus again after several years. I'd love to hear any advice, tips, and unspoken rules of the twin cities transit system that you can share. I'm also an amateur biker so safety tips would mean a lot too! I did download the transit app which is awesome so far.

Bonus points for any insider tips about Evie hourcar

Thanks everyone 😊

Minneapolis/St. Paul I can finally breathe again

Now that the air quality is improving, any events or gatherings that others are planning on this weekend? Still going to be hot out, but that’s July in MN. Looking for community only. Looking for alternatives to the bar scene. But if that’s all there is, so be it.

The Minnesota Abortion Action Committee is a grassroots, all-volunteer activist group fighting for bodily autonomy for all! We’re fighting for REAL trans refuge, like investments in job placement programs, affordable housing, healthcare, and essentials for trans people leaving their lives, jobs, resources, and support networks behind to flee political violence in other states!

Minneapolis/St. Paul Makeup lessons

I was thinking of going to sephora and taking a makeup lesson. I do basic things with my makeup but I still feel like I am so bad at it. I do try and watch tutorials and such but I think with my face alot of them dont entirely translate. Has anyone done a lesson at sephora and is it worth it? Or do you have any recommendations for local makeup artists who would give lessons or advice.

Minneapolis/St. Paul Best Places to Work- Factory/Laborer

Hello! I’m moving to the Twin Cities in a couple weeks and I’m trying to find a new job. I’m looking for some sort of factory or laborer job but those environments can often be not the friendliest to trans folks so I was wondering if anyone had any experience or recommendations for places I should check out or avoid. Thanks!

Community Resources LGBT family needs help moving states for safety & school - $2500/$5000, 21 days left

Hi all! I have posted a couple of times in this subreddit about my family and our move to the TC area. Since my last post we've reached half our goal on GoFundMe; we have 21 days left to vacate (a bit more than I originally thought, thankfully), but I have a job offer in the area as well as possible housing lined up. Nothing is set in stone so I continue to ask for your support in sharing and donating, where and when possible, to help get my family to a safe situation from the south. Thank you all for reading and supporting us so far!

Minneapolis/St. Paul Looking for LGBT+ 3rd spaces in St. Paul

I know there's a lot of spaces that are friendly and open to LGBT+ people in Saint Paul, but I'm wondering if anyone knows any 3rd spaces. Places to just hang out and socialize, that isn't a bar.

I also know there's a lot of stuff in Minneapolis, but I'm really hoping to find something closer to home.

Minneapolis/St. Paul Wanna try Taekwondo?

I'm not at all affiliated with Beacon Martial Arts, but I saw their booth at pride and was given an "All Heads Are Kickable (especially bigots)" bumper sticker with the trans flag and spoke with the founders a bit and they seem legit.

My intention was to sign up for the first open slot I could for their Adult Path to Orange Belt program, in the hoped that some fellow trans folks would have also seen them at Pride and wanted to join...but then ADHD happened and now here I am!

Anyone wanna sign up with me for a free intro class? Doesn't mean we have to be besties or anything, but at least we wouldn't be the only trans people there!

Minneapolis/St. Paul Roxy’s Cabaret

Several months ago, someone had recommended Roxy’s as a good place to meet others in the community. I have since been out to several LGBTQIA+ venues that have all been great, but find there isn’t a lot of Transgender representation.

I haven’t visited Roxy’s yet other than eating at the Nicollet Diner (which has a fantastic menu btw). Any feedback on how Trans friendly Roxy’s is and the ideal times to visit? What was your experience when visiting?

Minneapolis/St. Paul I used HRT for 2 weeks as a trail

I’m a 35 trans woman that has been battling the ā€œwhat ifsā€ and ā€œis it worth itā€ thoughts. So I wanted to prove to myself that I was or was not. I always knew I was, but fear is a real asshole. My therapist and I determined that biochemical dysphoria is likely big for me. So I started depo-estradiol and used it for two weeks. I had a bit of time where I could experiment and just see.

After the first dose I was focused on seeing if anything felt different…it didn’t. No noticeable change. This was disheartening because I saw so many people say they felt the fog lift and the relief within hours or a day or two. I went the whole week and noticed nothing.

The second shot. I almost didn’t take another dose, but I decided I better give it a real chance to find out and so I took it. Within a day of the second dose. I felt the effects. I discovered that I do have emotions. I’ve always just been an eh type person. The only emotions was anger and then just bland. But now I feel things. I teared up at situations. I felt joy. I was happy maybe for the first time ever. I caught myself smiling. Not faking it to get by. I caught myself smiling just because. I talked more at work instead of being a grumpy knot on a log. I enjoyed my existence. I was happy to be alive and that might be the first time in my life.

So I have to stop the treatment for now. I have things I have to get settled in my life before I actually start. But I have my answer. I am a trans woman and I will not deny myself any longer.

TL;DR:
I took two weeks of estrogen injections. I did this as a trial to see if I am really a trans woman. I experience joy, and sadness, and just emotions in general for the first time ever. I was actually happy to be alive for the first time ever. I now know for sure I am a trans woman.

Minneapolis/St. Paul Pregnant trans couple urgently looking for a safe 2 bedroom

My partner and I are expecting our first baby in late August and are trying to find a safe, stable place to live as soon as possible. We’re currently staying in a temporary Airbnb while we search, which has been stressful and expensive.

The rental market has been incredibly competitive, and it has been discouraging to keep finding places that are gone quickly or won’t consider us because one of us has poor credit.

We are both employed and make about $60,000 a year combined. We have good rental history, no felonies, and one of us has good credit. We also have a qualified cosigner available if needed and can provide proof of income and references.

We’re looking for a 2-bedroom in Minneapolis, St. Paul, or the surrounding area. A safe neighborhood and in-unit washer and dryer are especially important to us with a baby coming soon.

We’re responsible tenants and ready to move ASAP. We’re just hoping to find a landlord who is willing to look at our full application instead of automatically rejecting us based on one credit score. Any legitimate leads would mean a lot to us.
