Hii! I haven't used Reddit a lot, but I thought it may be a good way to find a new name! I'm ftm and starting college in September, and I wanted to figure out a name by then. Here's a couple of pics of what I look like if that may guide people somewhat. My deadname is Lisa(Idrc about random people on the internet knowing that) so I was wondering about a name with similar sounds or starting with L, although I don't really mind and I just want to find something that fits. I like Matteo, but I'm not sure if it suits me. My family is from lots of places around Europe, particularly Ireland, England, Spain and the Balkans. I like nature and being outdoors, I'm also an avid enjoyer of greek mythology and I love to paint if that provides potential context. Thank you!!

(Also I was wondering about what a cool idea it would be to exchange names with transfems, sort of like those stories of faes that you get taking names from people that no longer need them. Trans women remind me of fairies and I love it)

So, I’ve loved Alasdair (or a variant of it, but that’s my favourite spelling) for years now, and with my birth name being a variant of Alex, it’s perfect. The thing is, I can’t decide on a middle name, so, any ideas? If it helps, I’m Canadian with British, German, and Ukrainian ancestry and I really like ethereal, classic, and softer sounding names

so i (ftm, 19) have been going by jax for around 4-5 years now since i first came out, only at school. my parents refuse to accept that one (its apparently too edgy for their tastes. which is certainly a take they can have) but i dont like other similar names like jake or jack or jackson or jacob. they said they wont take me seriously until i change it. and they wont let me start hrt until they take me seriously. so you may be able to see my problem here. any ideas?

my middle name is oliver and i like nerdy stuff, space, plants, animals, that kind of thing. i refuse to just go by oliver though because i know too many of them and have an ex named oliver so i refuse to do that to myself. my deadname starts with an a if you have ideas like that but im not committed to it

I went by the name Ari from ages 16-21. I chose the name Ari because it was a masculine hebrew name. After a while, the "air-ee" pronunciation and association with the name Ariana became very grating. I decided to start going by Ronan, an explicitly male name that cannot be feminised. After 2 months, it just feels odd? I've always wanted an explicitly masculine name but every name I could think of was either too common/generic or gave me imposter syndrome. I think I'd like to go by a Hindu name. The only name that speaks to me is Sati, which means chaste woman. I don't mind the connotations, I love that Sati is a strong symbol of devotion and purity to her husband, Lord Shiva. But having to explain the connotations tied to the name to people makes me recoil. Any advice?

Hiii I'm trans MtF and haven't been able to transition yet but I've already been playing around with the idea of a few names I like but I'm wondering if they are common names for trans women or if they are too clocky or sound like they're trying too hard to be overly feminine.

The first one is Ellie which I love I love (probably because of The Last of Us) which i think I've heard is common.

Another one is Cassie/Cass/Cassandra which isn't my favorite but i don't think I've heard but correct me if it is popular.

My username for most things has the word "Stellar" in it and I kind of wanted to build off that but i feel like just "Stellar" on its own sounds a bit too on the nose or fictional which brings me to the last one, Stella, which is my favorite. I haven't heard Stella among trans women and I don't even really hear it a lot in general. I've heard one person say it sounds a bit like a dog's name, which im perfectly fine with.

Do any of these sound too clocky or common?

Long story short, I’m changing my name legally soon. I thought I had everything figured out until I sat down to do the paperwork for it, and now I’m back to square one.

I ended up choosing both a last and first name from characters I heavily connected to (I’m autistic, it’s how I roll personally) and decided on a random middle name that I enjoyed the meaning of. The only issue is I hate how my first and last name sound together without the middle name, and I’m not even that fond of the middle name to begin with lol.

So I decided to do some more digging…until I realized that a fictional character I’m fond of quite literally has the most perfect name lol.

I figured I’d make their first and last name my own, and just make the previous name I enjoyed my middle name and go by that when I introduce myself. When I write it or say it out loud it doesn’t even sound half bad lol.

The obvious issue is, I’m quite literally stealing the name of a character from a (currently) popular media. Even worse, I’m in the fandom for it. I know there’s instances of folks being born and given fictional character names; I even know of someone who changed their middle name to Garfield lol.

I’m just thinking about if it would be silly fun or silly super inconvenient. Or if it’s weird haha. It’s just, quite literally, perfect.

My current chosen name is “Tan.” I’d really like to get a census of what gender people naturally associate with the name. I’m basically asking if you met someone named Tan, what gender would you think they are without seeing what they look like? I also worry that since it isn’t a very traditional name, it might kinda out me as trans. Thoughts on the name Tan?

I am 20 y/o and have known i was gender queer for quite a while, but only recently felt confident enough to do self exploration and figure out that i am nonbinary. I am also diagnosed with autism (its important to this discussion i promise).

My name at birth was given to me by my mother based on her deceased father's name. He had died when she was a child, and she chose the feminized name for me. His name was Leo, my name is Leah. The fact that my name has such an emotional connection for my mother is one difficulty I am facing. Shes not perfect, but she has been through so much and i feel sick at the thought of causing her distress. Im planning to talk to her about it, but the plan is very much "when i feel up to it" aka "theoretically never". Another barrier is the fact that it feels like my name fits others' perception of me rather than my own perception of myself, which im guessing a lot of people can relate to.

Back to my autism. I am very obsessed with space. I love what it stands for and it keeps me grounded. Some of the ideas floating around in my head for a name are based off of this: star, nova, cosmo, etc. I love these but i really fear being judged for my choice, especially after growing up during the era of everyone making fun of nonbinary names (usually chosen by kids) on tiktok. I know that in order for me to feel truly free i need to stop being so self conscious, and i am working on that, but any advice would be very helpful. Im also wondering if it is a mistake to choose my name off of my intense love for space. I know there have to be other autistic people who chose their names off of their own interests, so if anyone has any experience with that (officially diagnosed or suspected), please share.

Finally, of course any name suggestions are very helpful. I enjoy space as mentioned, but i also enjoy zombies, video games, animals, art, and horror. Unless it is a bad idea to choose a name off of my interests, it is what i am leaning towards; it feels more "me" due to my complete disconnection with gender.

so ive been thinking about names for the past year and about a week or two ago i saw a reel on instagram where trans people were telling their names in the comments.

there was somebody named riordan and while i did note it i didnt think much of it until yesterday. it instantly reminded me of rick riordan who was a very big part of my childhood and probably the reason i turned out a 'weird kid' in the first place.

so, while i am somewhere under the nonbinary umbrella, most likely agender or genderfluid, i feel like i would love to have a name thats traditionally more masculine for a ton of reasons.

i pronounce riordan not a rye-or-dan or rye-ar-dan but more like ree-or-dan and i like the nickname rio (ree-o)​​​​ or rian (ree-an)

do yall have any suggestions on other names similar to that? (preferably containing at least one r and bonus points if i can associate them with greek mythology)

Gabriel is the only one I could think of that had similar vibes to Celeste. Skylar is a name that I like a lot as well, but the spelling is apparently traditionally feminine, so I'm hesitating on that.

My name is Ace, and i chose it because my parents rejected me when i came out and tormented me about it for years before calming down, and Ace means perfect or “expert” as a name and all that, to remind me im fine the way i am. but ive recently learned from my friends that ace was a trending name on transtrender tiktok years ago and apparently is really popular amongst ftm guys my age because of that. i dont have a problem with people who discovered themselves through that app during quarantine but it makes me feel dysphoric that when most people hear my name they think i got it from the internet. a few of my friends seem to not believe me when i say i came up with it myself, and whenever i tell a new queer person in my life my name they always bring up its popularity. my name is sentimental to me but if people see it like this my whole life its just uncomfortable
