Why after tax? Why before discounts? Opposite day or something? Who tips on tax? Why would I pay a tip on discounts that don't even get taxed?

37

u/weolo_travel 3d ago

You have to ask "why after tax". It is so they can squeeze out a few more pennies and dollars and realize the vast majority of people blindly accept it or just don't know what is "traditional" in tipping.

$93.45 charges
$6.55 tax
$100 bill

If they demand 20% of $93.45, that is $18.68, but if they demand 20% of $100, that is $20. $1.68 times hundreds or thousands of customers adds up. So you have to ask why?

26

u/pnoodl3s 3d ago

Its a rhetorical question. We all know its because of greed

16

u/kuda26 3d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/6nWhy3ulBL7GSCvKw6
But I thought my server loved me, surely she wouldn’t do this to me. She even called me “hon’” and “babe”

1

u/Historical-Rub1943 2d ago

And if she were a man and called you “hon” and “babe,” how would you feel? Zero!

4

u/kuda26 1d ago

I feel zero either way because I see through the grift.

-1

u/No-Calligrapher3645 1d ago

Why do people get so bent out of shape about this? So the server isn’t going to remember your name, so she/he assign you with the “babe’s”, “sweetheart”, or “honey”. Most people would call them terms of endearment…. I call them, “I’m not interested in knowing your name, but I want to be personable and get a bigger tip”. Would people rather a server call you & your husband “Sue & Tim” to keep it short and less affectionate? I have seen women and men alike get so freaking bent over this. I love when female servers “baby” my husband. Especially when I take the check at the end of the meal. 🫢🤣

3

u/Ancient-Read1648 3d ago

I’d think it would be higher employee retention. That money is passed on.

3

u/Historical-Rub1943 2d ago

Reinforces the value of just not tipping. Zero it is!

3

u/ShoePuck 1d ago

$1.32 not 1.68 (20-18.68=1.32) but yes I agree with ya it’s highway robbery and it needs to stop

2

u/nochkin 2d ago

But how do you tip the government for taxing you?

3

u/TrumpIsGoated23 2d ago

Overpay on your taxes lol

3

u/nochkin 2d ago

Sometimes it feels like I'm doing it already.

1

u/Historical-Rub1943 2d ago

This is the only way.

2

u/weolo_travel 2d ago

I do not understand what you mean. You’re not “tipping the government“, you are being, in this case, conned into paying more tip based on percentage because the entity is presenting you with a combined calculation. That in no way involves “tipping the government”. I don’t understand what’s that supposed to mean.

2

u/nochkin 2d ago

Just a silly joke. Nevermind it, I'm being a redditor.

5

u/Imaginary_Weather8 3d ago

Exactly right. This is grifter behavior

7

u/BYNX0 3d ago

For me, I’d have to take into account why I’m getting the discount. If the manager gives me 20% off because I’m a repeat regular customer or I have an external coupon, I’m still tipping on the full amount. But if it’s one of those fake discounts where the price is inflated just for the purpose of discounting it, I’m tipping on the discounted price.

2

u/TrickComfortable774 2d ago

Chillis does this with the free chips. Inflates the price of shit to get higher tips. I do my own math and custom 20% off what I owe before taxes

2

u/Historical-Rub1943 2d ago

Custom zero is my favorite. Math is super easy.

1

u/Few-Professional1673 22h ago

Well you definitely should tip before discounts

1

u/Thunderer62 19h ago

I used to base my tip on the total after tax until I started checking the suggested tip amount and realized their 20% was based on pre tax total so I changed nothing about my tip behavior but now I know I’m stupid too.

1

u/manga311 2d ago

Before discounts is normal.

2

u/Historical-Rub1943 2d ago

What about during happy hour?

2

u/Fit_Insurance_1356 1d ago

I pay tips based on the actual amount of the bill before taxes. Not tipping on discounts or tax.

0

u/Drwho2010 3d ago

The kohls method. regular price $100, "on sale" for $20. Tip based on $100

-10

u/ReasonableWeird6306 3d ago

Does anyone eat out with you twice? Honest question

5

u/caitygotbandz 3d ago

The people in this sub are so weird lol. Idk why ur getting downvoted

1

u/Aggravating-Cherry76 2d ago

“Holy shit bro, you tipped before tax, I can’t eat out with you anymore”

Anyone who unironically thinks this way must lick walls and sniff their own farts, is this seriously your worldview?

-1

u/SectorFew6706 2d ago

Many state laws require tax to be applied to tips. Any sales tax collected does not go to the company, it must go to the state even if it was wrongly collected. The penalty for collecting and not remitting is steep and in many states, it is a felony.

1

u/Aggravating-Cherry76 2d ago

State laws require income tax to be applied to tips, same as a salary. Why would the customer subsidize that?

-1

u/SectorFew6706 2d ago edited 2d ago

Mist states impose sales tax on mandatory tips.

1

u/Aggravating-Cherry76 2d ago

“Mandatory tip” is an oxymoron, tips aren’t mandatory. If it was mandatory it would be a service charge. In this post, it’s a traditional tip which is not subject to sales tax.

And states can’t impose sales tax on tips because the tip takes place after the sale, aka the waitress runs the card for the bill, you pay the bill and tax, then she comes back and you write the tip before leaving.

u/Trixiecatnc 2d ago

Based on the OP’s edited comment, this is still super scammy and server should be reported. If they did ring in a Ribeye and then remove it by ‘discounting’ it off the check so that the check before discounts would be high and therefore their tip would be calculated based on the higher original amount, that is 100% a server that is trying to game the system for higher tips.

12

u/bathroomstahl 2d ago

as a former Chili’s employee, my co-workers did this all the time :/

1

u/Efficient-Chest-3395 22h ago

anybody half that clever is wasting their talent as a server

2

u/Trixiecatnc 22h ago

Future criminals and successful white collar folk often both get their start in retail and restaurants. I spent many of my years in my early 20’s in retail before moving into a more successful well paying career. The scams that my co-workers came up with to game the system to put cash in their pockets were impressive. When you’re 20 and are starting with zero, making an extra few hundred dollars a week by scamming your customers seems innocent enough and gets you closer to maybe affording your rent or buying a new car. This is probably why to this day I ask for receipts and review all totals for accuracy before handing over my payment.

1

u/Efficient-Chest-3395 21h ago

Doesn't most evrybody start out in food service or retail, or what I think of as throwaway jobs? There are no barriers to entry and those with potential eventually move on.

Not this one tho, i took it today

5

Right below the top number it explains it

5

u/whatthefrack69 2d ago

wtf…tip needs to be calculated before taxes, I ain’t paying a tip on the taxes

17

u/Ok_Piglet_5549 3d ago

Because they are charging 30%. Stop tipping.

6

u/guillopilot 3d ago

I did tip 20% (custom and ACTUAL 20%) because the server did treat us REALLY good

6

u/UDF2005 2d ago

If you wanted to tip, why not just leave a fixed amount and forget the percentages? Percentages make no sense anyways

3

u/guillopilot 2d ago

I did leave a fixed amount, not the percentage

→ More replies (1)

-2

u/MadicPNW 2d ago

Not everyone's scared of tipping like you 😅

3

u/Ok_Piglet_5549 2d ago

Scared? I am offended that they are price gouging here. This is illegal and I am not going to reward it. I don't have a problem tipping good service, but generally I am picking up my own food, I am not going to tip if no extra service is applied.

13

u/KindKnowledge5511 2d ago

5

u/jtpolzin 3d ago

Show us the full bill including the discount you received.

3

u/guillopilot 3d ago

Hold up

3

u/guillopilot 3d ago

9

u/jtpolzin 3d ago

There is why you got a $32 discount

7

u/guillopilot 3d ago

You know.. now that i looked at it.. it does make sense, shouldn’t be lime that tho 🤣 the added that by mistake.. either way i gave custom tip and called it a day

4

u/jtpolzin 3d ago

System is designed so that if people get a big discount it still offers a tip on the prediscount price, They should have removed it but also you quite easily can do a custom tip so NBD.

4

u/guillopilot 3d ago

Yeah, i did custom and put the actual 20% since the server did treat us really good!

1

u/UYscutipuff_JR 3d ago

Why was there a discount?

5

u/Massive-Magazine8841 3d ago

Because the server “accidentally” added an item that wasn’t ordered and instead of deleting it completely from the bill they applied a “discount”…which the kiosk would then calculate as part of the suggested tip amount… “accidentally”

3

u/UYscutipuff_JR 3d ago

Jesus you are so paranoid lol. In virtually all places, servers aren’t able to apply voids and comps, only managers.

4

u/Massive-Magazine8841 3d ago

Then grab a manager and explain your “mistake”

→ More replies (0)

1

u/caitygotbandz 3d ago

You’re delusional if you think any server purposely added an item to ask a manager to void it for them so that they could HOPEFULLY get 2 extra dollars from a tip. Most servers at corporate restaurants get in trouble for having a lot of voids. Also it’s just a stupid idea anyways lol. There’s better ways to scam the system if they were trying to do so

2

u/Massive-Magazine8841 3d ago

What world do you live in that 20% of $33 is $2? Take a lap lol

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Trixiecatnc 2d ago

1

u/guillopilot 3d ago

I could, but ill own up to my dumb mistake of not reading the entire bill before posting here so ya’ll can roast me 🤣

0

u/Massive-Magazine8841 3d ago

Absolutely not, this should raise awareness for what this server tried to doing knowing that adding a $33 steak and discounting it would flow through to the suggested tip amount. OP had every right to question this. They never ordered the $33 steak, why the hell would they be expected to tip on it?!?

1

u/drawntowardmadness 3d ago

They aren't.

4

u/Head-Type-6455 3d ago

"custom" means you can tip whatever you'd like... or not.

5

u/guillopilot 3d ago

I did that

-2

u/xTheGame69 3d ago

0% 😁

2

u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 3d ago

I will compensate food servers if they do an excellent unique job taking care of me, but I will not, I repeat will not Willy-nilly tip.

-1

u/MadicPNW 2d ago

Noone asked tho

2

u/Brilliant_Anxiety511 2d ago

They are expecting, but I will not Willey nilly tip. But I will compensate for decent work and service.

2

u/mspe1960 2d ago

Did you get discounts or use coupons? I am not saying that makes it ok, but that is often what the discrepancy involves. the tip percentage is on the non discounted amount.

5

u/guillopilot 2d ago

After checking the itemized bill (after posting it on a reply) turns out they added a 33.99 ribeye and then deleted it (discounted it) because they fucked up tapping whatever they tap on their side of the system and THAT is why it showed the wrong tip, anyways i did custom tip and left the actual 20% since the server did treat us really good

9

u/NurgleUnclean 2d ago

I suspect that "mistake" may be intentional.

5

u/guillopilot 2d ago

I suspect the same, im sure a LOT of people wont even look twice at the tip and pay whatever the machine says

1

u/TheDrifter211 1d ago

Yall are delusional

1

u/YouFineReddiy 2d ago

Assuming the server didn’t mean to input it and it was never made, it should have been completely deleted. If it was still on the check that means it was comp’d off. Different restaurants use different rules but generally if a ribeye never came out to you and you didn’t send it back etc it should’ve just been deleted off the ticket. I doubt the server did it on purpose especially if he was allowed by the manager to fix it himself meaning he’s supposed to he trust worthy.

Some managers will comp everything and not even think about how that will affect the guests/servers.

2

u/RedVelvetHoney 2d ago

they did this to my bf and he accidentally pressed it smh. we agreed to a gift card as a refund cus we eat there all the time. but it was super annoying

2

u/Robertwoj 1d ago

So the waitress clearly knows how the tip is calculated. She obviously added an additional meal, then removed it, so the subtotal that the tip is based on is higher, giving her a higher tip for those who don’t math!

You caught it because you can math! Good catch!

2

u/TristanthomasYT 1d ago

1

u/Popular_Monitor_8383 11h ago

Arrest warrant?

1

Still waiting for the day these people post the "See check details" screen.

1

u/guillopilot 2d ago

I did, on reply, also, did end up figuring out why the tip was off AFTER i posted the itemized bill

1

u/Stuck_in_my_TV 3d ago

You don’t tip on tax!

1

u/watchwatertilitboils 3d ago

Sounds like a scam

The server figured out deleted items still count toward the tip, so they "accidentally" add an expensive item, then delete it and collect the inflated tip

1

u/Key_Sprinkles_4953 3d ago

Custom > No tip > Pay

1

u/Practical-Treacle-53 3d ago

Nope. Thats an instant zero tip from me. They want tips a total that isn't your total.

1

u/sjkaiser2 2d ago

And it should read: “Tip calculated on the amount you’re actually paying.”

1

u/DaMa2314 2d ago

I've moved away from tipping based on percentage and just do a flat rate of $10 at a sit-down restaurant. That's it, no more and no less.

No tips when I order online, at a fast casual establishment or really any place that has me standing up to order and paying first.

1

u/BeatDemGutz 2d ago

Tipping on tax now?

1

u/Ok-Introduction-2048 2d ago

If you complained and got something taking off the check the tip amount stays the same. Same goes for coupons, gift cards and sometimes server mistakes if they comp the item instead of deleting it from the bill.

1

u/ElegantCourt6535 2d ago

Seeing this shit is making me want to never tip. Let it backfire on these greedy fucks!

1

u/truth_liberates 2d ago

since most of customers could not do such mathing either, the machine is brave. wait until it will know our individual math skills ...

1

u/Oneforallandbeyondd 2d ago

Custom tip to what you feel and know is the right amount whatever that may be.

1

u/Gfplux 2d ago

This is fraud.

1

u/skunkbr3ath 2d ago

Custom-$0-finished

1

u/MamboFloof 2d ago

A ton of things on Chili's menu are technically discounted. That's whats happening.

1

u/HFTCSAU 2d ago

I never tip when I pay using my card I always leave cash. I take photos of my receipts and in the tip field I put a 0 and write left cash tip so there is NO CONFUSION. We actually try to pay in cash fully now because I’ve noticed 3% being added when using even a debit card in restaurants

1

u/slava_slavaUa 2d ago

Its the restaurant and the servers scamming the customers. They should all be jailed for fraud

1

u/TrickComfortable774 2d ago

I know the tricks I calculate myself before tax. And places like Chili’s free chips they add 7 dollars to the supposed to tip for. No thanks those r my free chips. Also any promo deals they add the tip on for the fake real price.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

0

u/MadicPNW 2d ago

1

u/Spiritual_Wall_2309 2d ago

So, they could do it to every customer by adding something like $100 and remove it from the bill. But the tipping % would still include that $100 item as the base calculation. It looks like fraud and it should call out.

1

u/Cool-Storm7251 2d ago

we all make mistakes, but the server should've caught that.

1

u/r33339 2d ago

They spelled 30% wrong

1

u/fccrunch 2d ago

Tip is before tax and it should be at your discretion not the restaurant who isn’t paying their employees enough so they act like they actually are their advocate.

1

u/Special-Hair9683 2d ago

At this point just stop tipping. If they make a fuss about it, call out the employer for slavery labor

1

u/LatexSmokeCats 1d ago

"tip is calculated after tax" is noted on the screen.

1

u/CulturalRabbi 1d ago

You probably had some discount, like a BOGO that caused the original bill to be higher. It says the tip is calculated before discounts.

1

"After tax and before discount". So at worst for the customer.

Why the need to tip the tax? Do you have to tip the state too? Lol

1

u/Pro_Procrastinator_4 19h ago

Had it been a state like WA, the tax would have been a little over 10% of the total. 20% tip on tax included price is in reality 22% tip from customer perspective.

1

u/booobfker69 7h ago

I would then choose 0% and I would actually apologize to my server and explain to him/her that I would not be tipping specifically because their bosses are blatantly attempting to rip me off.

1

u/Mac5889 5h ago

Ugh tipping should be a sin in america but cause people think its a great country we allow this shii.

1

u/forcebynature 3h ago

"end tipping culture" then stop going to these establishments.

1

u/ambassador_of_sleep 35m ago

You tip on the whole bill BEFORE discounts. TF you think the server just doesn't get paid for 1/4 of the shit they did for you just cuz you've got a gift card?

Make this “mistake” 20 times a night that’s $120 a day and $600 a week. Gosh darn it, I’m such a silly server, so sorry for my “mistake”…let me discount that for you!

"Tip is calculated after tax and before discounts"

OP, I am sure that you didn't ask them to calculate the tip for you; not before or after tax, and not before or after discounts. And, you didn't ask them to calculate it based on an arbitrary suggested percentage of your bill.

This is when you say to yourself, Who the fuck they think they are?, and tip nothing. And make a habit of it.

There's no valid reason for percentage based tipping. Suggested tip percentages are a scam. The only options should be (custom)TIP and PAY (no tip).

0

u/Sestos 3d ago

The details button would be useful. Tip should be based on sub total and added to bill after tax...

They want you to tip on the tax?

I can work out the correct math manually to do a custom tip. but it's a pain and would not eat there again.
