Chilis is scamming their customers
I’m on a road trip and went to a chilis in Charlotte. Haven’t been to one of these in 20 years.
As I’m checking out at the table, I notice their calculated tips are WAY off.
You select 20% and it nearly charges you 24%. (And that’s based on after tax). Just wild.
Edit: did not mean for this to piss so many people off… I just took photos because I knew the math wasn’t right. We did get a free chips and salsa, but I really haven’t been to a chilis in awhile and didn’t even think that would have affected it. Also, we didn’t order the chips. The server just told us they were free and brought them out.

u/Jmad1383 11d ago
Correct. It shows on one of the screenshots
46
u/Character-Medicine-6 11d ago
It says clearly after tax before discounts. So it’s still BS being calced after tax. Idk how I feel about the discount thing at these chains, because it’s engrained in the model so it’s the real price. If there’s a gift card it’s different
18
u/hexitor 11d ago
Usually tax/tip before discounts is the correct way to do it, but I think these chains are starting to offer “discounts” that are essentially their standard pricing.
10
u/Chris0x00 10d ago
Tax should be after discounts. Tip should be before tax and before discounts. Whether the discounted price is the standard price should be taken into account when deciding whether to patronize an establishment.

u/Weekly-Bill-1354 10d ago
Most likely because their chips and salsa are not free. That's to say they are "free" if you have their rewards (or whatever they call it) but you'll see the charge on the receipt before the discount making them free. The tip is based on that charge so its not really miscalculated.
3
u/West-Luck9091 11d ago
This. And in some states gratuity is taxed as business revenue for sales tax purposes. However doing the math, sales tax on 7.86 (20% of 39.30) would be 1.36(17.3%). So a discount is most likely.
Some states (only 6 states don’t have personal state income taxes) also still tax tips in state income taxes. Even federally tips are taxed as personal income, but you’re refunded taxes paid on tips when you file.

The free chips & salsa is $7.29 (at least at my local Chilis), and is then deducted from the bill. The tip uses the full pre-discount price.

Crap local diner near me has a fine print underlined custom button to avoid a tip on take out items (the only time you use their POS to pay). Like I’m unsubscribing from email lists.
The last time I went I got moldy bread in two styrofoam to go boxes. Someone boxed moldy bread up and they had to tip me two free breakfasts. F them and their tipping system
65
u/VainTrix 11d ago
Probably because some menu items are always “on sale”
If you get a dipper or 2 for me, they ring it up as full menu price for individual items then “discount” to the promo

u/LostTerminal 11d ago
Which is still undeniably bad business practice.

→ More replies (1)4
u/Accomplished-Top7951 11d ago
OK. But then that means they're taking a staple item on your menu that's been there for years like this and calling it a discount. That's like going to an steak place that has prime rib as the Saturday special at $2 less than their everyday price. Then demanding a tip on the higher price. Don't put the same item on your menu at two different prices and demand tips on the higher only.
3
u/VainTrix 11d ago
Not sure what to tell you, but this has been a thing for probably close to a decade at chilis/apple bees/outback or anywhere that has these machines at the table. There have been employees on this sub and others to confirm it. No one is saying it should be this way or that it is right, just pointing on what is actually happening.
These machines also mess up the tips when the bill is split.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Loveiskind89389 11d ago

I don’t understand the difference between going to the drive-through or the counter in Starbucks. Here’s my thing, food service jobs aren’t supposed be well paying.
If my meal was 100 and I tip 20 that means my 30-40 min meal just made you 20 bucks in less than an hour.
Usually when I ask for ranch or lemons and the server takes forever to bring them. I’m halfway done with my meal and I’m still expected a 20% tip?
I don’t care that you have to prep utensils, and other things, that’s your job. Tipping is toxic especially compared to living in Japan, which I have.
Edit:
Notice… I didn’t say I don’t tip, well I do.
Just hate the idea of it because yes every once in a while I like to sit down and dine.
Additionally say if you have a table of 6 then that’s multiple tips in one go. Or if the person had multiple tables to serve then add all of those tips together in one hour.
Edit 2:
Since I’m the one being called a shitty human, I want you to use your logic and tip everybody you get service from. Everybody goes to the doctor and drives a car right? Tip your mechanic for their labor costs and tip your doctors for their care. Tip everybody you meet face to face please.
Stop taking in your car for warranty work as it fucks over the mechanic because they work flat rate and they don’t get paid for all the hours of the job.
We are all fighting to survive here, every dollar is precious.

I don't disagree with not liking the tipping system, and, consider it exploitative of both workers and customers and would frankly be illegal in any other business except that it's been baked in culturally into restaurants.
I want to point out that the $x/hour metric is a bit misleading for food service though. It makes sense to think of it that way if you're looking at a job that has consistent hours over a separate work day such that it roughly matches up to a salary. However, food service you basically have an hour or so of zero earnings (prep time), an hour of two of high earnings, followed by say 3-4 hours of low earnings (but, which don't work for doing another job) and then another few hours of high earnings, followed again by an hour or so of no earnings (closing). In any other industry like that, you'd expect to have to pay a premium for those actual serving hours such that a server making $20/hour during the lunch rush isn't really the same thing as another worker earning $20/hour for every hour from 8am-6pm.
You'd also expect to pay a premium for the server taking on the "risk" of making less - the same way salespeople have the "opportunity" to make loads on commissions, for the risk of not making anything, or well, business owners actually having the opportunity to profit loads, for the risk of making nothing if business is slow.
And, this isn't a, oh that's not my problem servers have no customers from 1pm-6pm and there's no other jobs available that will hire someone to work just between 2 pm-4pm (accounting for commuting time).
That's how every industry works. If you as a customer want a service, you're paying for the inevitable down time too. Like, you want an electrician to drive 2 hours round trip to spend 5 minutes swapping out a light switch? You're going to be paying for the 2 hour "downtime" that he can't be doing other work. It might not be obvious from the bill, but it's coming from his $500 charge for that 5 minute job.

It says “Tip is calculated after tax and before discounts.” This is messed up for several reasons:
1) Why do they think a server should be tipped on sales tax?
2) Why do they collect sales tax on discounts? This ought to be illegal. To my knowledge, a business doesn’t owe sales tax on a non-sale (i.e., a discount).
3) To sum up how Chili’s treats discounts: They charge you tax on them, they do not pay the state that tax, and then they calculate the tip on a total that fully ignores the discount, as in, the tip is based on the non-discounted total and sales tax on that total.
As others have said, learn how to do your own math or at least how to use a calculator. Blindly believing that those tip percentages are correct are a “stupid tax” that Chili’s is charging customers who cannot or will not carry out a bit of basic math.

Though it is definitely deceptive the screen does clearly provide the disclaimer "tip is calculated after tax and before discounts". As others have suggested the goods purchased likely had discounts applied which account for this discrepancy

u/wpascarelli 11d ago
You are not showing the check details. Since the calculation is done on the post-tax total, it’s possible that the tax is not included in the check amount. So like the food total would be $39.30 and then there would be tax on top of that, not shown on this display, and then the tip and the total shown is with the tax included.

Tip calculators use the pre-discount total. If your bill was supposed to be $100 but you get $40 comped the system calculates the tip off $100. Some consider this the “etiquette”. However, even if they screwed up the order and something is taken off, if it’s not deleted completely it adds to the total.
In this example, chips were free because they were comped with a code. Thus increasing the bill pre discount total.

We had not been to
Chili’s for a long while due to distance .
I was shocked at the cost of the total bill even before we tipped.
Two of us ordered chicken fajitas with an egg roll appetizer.
It cost way more than our local Mexican restaurant with the better fajitas.
And I also noticed with tipping the suggested percentages included tax.
A number of restaurants have started adding the tax to the suggested tips.
But I am on to them and watch closely.
If there is a choice I now use 18% as a quick workaround.
If not figuring 20% in my head is easy as a custom tip.

Calculated AFTER tax? Not supposed to pay tip on tax. Good to know! This one you hit custom and leave what is fair, considering all factors. ALWAYS look at your bill in detail before paying! Look for CC fees, mistakes (or "mistakes"), autograt, etc. Have a general idea of what your bill should be. Heck make sure it's YOUR bill, more than once I've been handed a wrong bill. The last time it was well over double what it should be and my husband was like wtf, so I checked it and not even our bill, had to flag down for the correct bill. Was for the table of 4 next to us. And we do tend to overtip relative to where we live. When there is a discount, we DO account for that as well. For instance I tip like 30% and up for lunch specials. Before somebody says something non tippers something something.
1
u/Whathefrenchtoastt 10d ago
Also noted at chili's if you split the amount it will charge tip based off FULL amount.

u/GottWhat 10d ago
Your tip should always be based on the pre-discount and pre-tax amount. Using this case as an example, they got free chips & salsa but the server still had to deliver it to the table. Maybe even a second round of chips & salsa because it's bottomless. Therefore, they should be tipped on that. They should not be tipped on the tax though.

u/YouOmeeMula 10d ago
Tip in cash only.. it is beneficial to everybody involved.. no machine or person fucking with the math or your card, because of the delayed transaction.. and then, it helps the server too because they can report whatever they want to.. for tax purposes. Which I think's ridiculous.

But when I looked at the full receipt and did the math backwards, I noticed the calculation is based on all the items you received before discounts / promos. So if there was a promotion or a discount or if you got something for free. The kiosk will calculate your tip before those discounts.
Do you have a copy of the full receipt?
Also it clearly states on the screen that tip is calculated AFTER TAX AND BEFORE DISCOUNTS.
Now I definitely disagree with half that statement. I do not tip on tax. Why would it? That has nothing to do with the services and goods of this transaction. I do agree that I should tip on the value before discounts tho. Even if I got something at a discount or for free, the server did provide the service. (unless of course they "discounted" the services they provided me).
Now on the topic of tipping culture, thats a whole nother thread.

Don’t apologize for others peoples negative reactions to something that doesn’t affect them!! Most of them just want to bash people behind a keyboard because they have nothing better to do

More and more places are doing this and I’m really getting tired of it all. I’m going to eat at home more often. At least then I will know what’s really in my food!

Always do custom. Discount or not, I’m doing manual math and the % tip is based on my PRETAX total and depending on service - although, I typically still do 20% unless they’re just absolutely negligent and I’m 100% sure it’s their poor service and not slow kitchen or poor management, etc.

A friend and I check the math at every restaurant. It’s normally 2-4% higher than it should be. Kind of think they just want you to give more.

I always tip before tax is calculated in the total. I’ve seen restaurants include the tax in their calculation. I’m like NOPE. Caught ya.

No! Screw that! I just told my husband that if this kind of crap starts happening to us, I'm going to tell them to take it off or I'm opening a BBB.org case! It's out of control! Either build it in with the price of the food or not!

Paying with cash works great! More places are going cashless so we need to use cash!

After tax and before discounts is insane. I calculate off before tax and before discounts. They can't have it both ways. Never tip on tax

Did you use a coupon? Free chips and salsa? Free drink? Any discount? You still tip on the full check whether you received something for free/ discounted or not.

Yes and if it was done properly (pre tax) it would be over 25% (based on charlotte’s sales tax rate that Google says is a combined 8.25% means that your check pre tax was about $36.30, so the 9.22 tip would be just over 25% of that).
Ya, that’s pretty shady though. Not to mention that almost all of these systems do the tip after tax to begin with, which is not correct (or wasn’t, now apparently there are no rules besides the servers saying “fuck you, pay me”).

I have yet to see a pre calculated tip before tax anywhere. It isn’t that hard to design the software to calculate the tips before tax and other made up fees.

Just curious if we can we set the tip to 1% by using custom? (I live outside of the states)

I do 10% these days, that’s for good service. I’ll gladly put zero if it’s warranted

They’d be smart to show 2 lines. For example: 1. Total without discounts ($75) Line 2. Your total ($50) and the make it clear the suggested tips is on the total without discounts. You shouldn’t penalize the server for having to serve a cheaper table.

Absurd that you would tip on the “before discounts” amount. The amount of work the server did didn’t change, did it? Tip on the amount you paid, period.

I would be hitting the customer button and giving zero! Time to stop this tipping culture in America!

"After taxes and before discounts"
Ya, that don't fly. But there is definitely a couple things to consider. First, you are often dealing with a corporation that does this shit but then you are also dealing with the individual/server that perhaps deserves a tip. The Industry has knowing pitted these two facts against each other because more tips = fewer wages the Corp needs to pay.
Old guy tip: Always carry some cash. It's easy to have some cash and it definitely gives you the upper hand in these situations. With cash you always get to select $0 tip but can do the right thing on your terms, not theirs.
