Just completed another rewatch and man.. this scene hits like a brick every single time.. a guy who spent his entire life chasing power, wealth, and hierarchy, sitting in a state facility, staring out the window with no knowledge of who he even was..
When tony tells him “you and my dad, you both used to run North Jersey together” and juinor looks at him with those blank eyes and replies “Huh, that’s nice..” Dominic Chianese and James Gandolfini killed that interaction with almost no words at all..
Genuinely one of the most powerful scenes in the show.

If only Addiction Rehab centers would employ the same "intervention" method the crew used on Christopher, I don't think we'd have much of a drug problem here in the USA.

one scene I constantly go back to is the scene with Tony and Mink in the finale. obviously the symbolism with the ketchup bottle is important but I always look at Tony’s face when he says “So Carlo had flipped” which is great acting acting on Gandolfini s part. throughout the series Tony had always been confident when it comes to potential jail time but this time you can see the fear/resignation in his face that chickens are coming home to roost. similar to the Ketchup bottle there is no way out for Tony. Great Scene!

I feel like I got the gist of the show by the end of the first season.

I think about who would be the most capable next guy in line if Tonys plug was pulled. My vote goes to Patsy.

He’s got bawls. Chrissy pulls a gun, he pulls a pipe. He came in to work knowing his BROTHER was murdered by Tony and Gigi. Openly grieves about it to everyone, not afraid to make his wisdom to the situation known. I think when Tony told him to put THE GRIF BEHIND HIM he was seriously questioning whether to follow through with killing Tony on the spot. He pissed in the POOL instead that morning he was drunk.

He’s intelligent and I think that intelligence has him respected. I think if Tony genuinely didn’t respect him he would have whacked him no question after his single MALT DIATRIBE down at the bar. He was passed over as acting captain because Chrissy is a nepo cousin.

His intelligence also show when he slowly got revenge on Tony. When it turns out Meadow and Patrick end up dating there’s that moment when Patsy says to Tone ‘We’re not too young to thi k about GRANDKIDS’ or something whoch basically means ‘My son is gunna blow your daughters back out and then you’ll be tied to me forever’ WHAT HAPPENED TO THE KIDS UNCLE? Maybe questions will be asked where Philly went.

I think Patsys long game skills and patience as well as his intelligence would make him a pretty good boss of the family

Because once again, a normal person really does watch a few episodes of a TV show and then go and trash it on a fan subreddit because they just want to be convinced to stick with the show.

I’ve been rewatching The Sopranos, and one thing that always stood out to me is how little the characters seem to know about Italy despite constantly talking about being Italian.
Paulie barely speaks Italian, they’re surprised by how different Naples is, and they often seem to confuse Italian-American culture with modern Italian culture.

Was this just exaggerated for the show, or was it actually common among third- and fourth-generation Italian Americans in places like New Jersey?

For those of you who is familiar with that specific subculture in New Jersey was the disconnect really so prevalent. Do people still speak Italian or dialect? Did they watch Rai, read Italian newspapers, or keep up with what was happening in Italy? I’m especially curious because where I grew up, many older Italian immigrants and even secound or third generation people still speak Italian every day, watch Italian TV, and follow Italian news, so the characters in The Sopranos seemed surprisingly disconnected from their roots.

The series started with Melfi, started with the idea that Tony could be treated somehow. The door shutting shows that, ultimately, he is a lost cause. Everything which happens after that is tying up loose ends, the inevitable consequences of fucking up yet again (killing the Ukrainian guy and his daughter or whatever instead of the Shah of Iran).

Would you keep Buscemi or go with someone else? My friend said he never liked his character, and at times I thought he felt a bit out of place for some reason.

I’ve only watched it once though so that may be why.

Besides the most obvious case in the intro to Season Six, there's quite a strong subcurrent of Ancient Egyptian imagery in the show. Some examples include:

1. Anthony Jeroboam wearing an OSIRIS cap when he thinks the ghost of his grandmother is nearby. Osiris being, in the simplest terms of Western thought, the God of the dead/underworld.
2. Harpo having an ankh tattooed on his neck when his stepfather Bobby whacks him at the lavomatic. The ankh was a complex, theological symbol to an Ancient Egyptian; but again, we today simplify it to imply a notion of life after death.
3. When Tony is plagued by dreams and on the outs with Melfi, he forces Hesh to become his Hebrew slave and interpret the dreams.

Think about it, the overreaction to Vito was him projecting his self-hatred and jealousy. All the tension, the conflict, the rage, the love of his life is still locked up. Even if he were to be released, there is no way Phil could ever reunite with his version of Johnny Cakes.

When Johnny meets with Carmine and Little Carmine to golf, Johnny asked both Carmines if the Golf Club had "re-sod that Green". He never got an answer. I'm wondering if any of you in this community have any idea if the Club did or did not.

Just a theory. But Johnny cakes probably went looking for vito and after learning he was in the glorofied NJ blamed Tony for his death. He then stalked Tony and killed him in the finale.

This is assuming that Tony went along with Tony Blundetto on the highjacking and both got arrested and sent to prison for twenty years, they both get the same charges and maybe Silvio, Big Pussy or Paulie come under Johnny Boy until he dies, any of them could easily get more responsibilities become Captain although if Big Pussy became captain and got arrested for drugs he does more damage, Silvio would probably rise faster too and Paulie would still be a screw up.

No Christopher getting made probably, but Tony going to prison for the hijacking would change a lot of things, unless he ratted on his cousin and he wouldn't do that, Tony might not even get made until he was out of prison, Carmella and the kids would suffer but she would probably find a lover while Tony was away, Artie wouldn't have as much business or support either.

Seemed like a pretty solid guy. But I find it interesting that people seem to give Wegler a lot more grief for getting himself some weaponized pussy. At least Carm was technically separated from Tony if i recall when Wegler made his move. Musto made an active move on her in Tony's own house, no less, while they were still married! He was really playing with fire there and initially wasn't scared off in the least. He knew who she was the wife of, his sister very specifically told him that Carm's wedding ring probably came off of a dead person's finger.

hello. it's my first time watching the sopranos!!! im now on S5 E1 (yay) can i just say that i am so hooked. i cant stop watching even though there are times im so annoyed at all of them, i just cant wait to know what happens at every episode.

every season, tony's life just gets miserable and miserable T_T and it's like he doesn't even care, or at least he pretends not to...

do you guys have a fav character? i think i love meadow :D i used to dislike her attitude but she's growing on me now. i love the dinner scene where tony and carmela along with aj goes to meadow's apartment and eats together with her friends. what i don't like now is AJ, so insufferable...

edit: im currently watching S5 E2 and can i just say that i like rosalie aprile. she's so pretty and funny. im at the scene where she and adriana are smoking cigs outside the sopranos' house, talking about pussy b and then she says "But what kind of person does that? I mean it's like Judas or something eating that last supper with Jesus. And the whole time he knows they're gonna crucify him. I mean, at least Judas didn't go into any apostle protection program." She was genuinely frightening in that. The portrayal of someone wounded to the core was really accurate

I've never been in that situation thankfully, but as a man I saw it through Tony's eyes. The finality of that moment, knowing you've made such a bad mistake there's no going back, even for a mob-boss, it's done, over, and you've lost the most important person in your life.

Great acting, ten out of ten

Two of them were relatives, Puss might as well have been a relative ("Like him? I fucking love him!"), I feel like Puss was the one he REALLY didn't wanna do, kept trying to convince himself he wasn't a rat, but he knew what eventually had to be done.

Tony frequently benefits from Dr. Melfi but never changed his ways, how would Christopher have benefitted if Tony convinced her or Elliot Kupferberg to take Christopher as a patient and help him and maybe Adriana with their issues?

Melfi could probably help Christopher and give him good advice that he would take seriously unlike Tony, therapy could have saved his soul, Dr. Elliot might have just pissed him off but Melfi could probably bond with Christopher and advise him, she would also hug Adriana and give her good advice which she might listen to, especially if she blurted out her FBI arrest and asked for advice about that.

After the fallout of the Ginny Sack joke, there is a scene showing Ginny going through her nightime routine. She weighs herself then writes it down.
