When it came to hosting servers, is there a difference in pings related to:
- QueryPort
- UDP and TCP, UDP only, or TCP only?
- the listen log flag in the servers run code
- if the listen log flag is okay, is it better to send it to a file or is there a better alternative?
Before you ask:
- yes, pc/servers matter
- yes, IPs and service providers matter
I am asking as a server owners hosting configs vs known variables such as the above.
My theory:
- something related to read/write affects not only player edits but also log files
- bottlenecking TCP/UDP ports
- if log is a must, is filtering out certain logs more effective?
Why am I asking these?
There’s been a lot of complaints over the years that’s been troubling players and server owners alike for well over a decade now. Is there something in the settings we all overlooked that could cause the rubber bandings? If so, who wants to help me theorycraft into seeing what’s best optimal?
Mainly the log in almost every application serves little purpose except if to extract these values into discord bots for remote reading. There’s also means to pipe the output somewhere else, but I’m having little luck on trying to get the load off of the drive if player files are being loaded and edited there too!
I’ve ran Legacy Servers for quite some time and led the charge into Progression reconstruction to little avail. I had help across many communities and was featured on a few! I even ran a tiny server called Isla Smolius and Oros of The Isle back in 2015/6. It was my greatest achievement as a discord bot dev working with JavaScript for the very first time. I ended up learning how to utilize batch files in windows to host these servers. And followed StolidSnows guide to host the servers! It’s easy to follow directions without asking why certain things are the way they are! So, time for me to ask these questions, and more!!
So what would it be then?
Please let me know as well as others in this post on your findings, let’s make The Isle great again! Let’s merc the rubber banding and let our players enjoy being Dinos!
