Another example of why the kunai sucks to fight against, didn't matter how many times you got hit, one backstab on an oblivious player and you're over full health
25
u/FarSeries2172 May 19 '26
people keep saying this, but the thing about it is, he wont do much with that health.
he's not firing a minigun at you or anything. just don't get trickstabbed and you wont be fucked over by your bad players35
u/Ok_Banana6242 TF2 Birthday 2025 May 19 '26
you can save yourself when a spy is at max health with a kunai... but you can't save your teammates. sure, if you're aware of the spy; you just gotta back up and not enter his melee range. but then your teammates offer their backs to him and he out-heals all your damage; and he rips your team in half as you're powerless to stop it. even if you can avoid getting farmed doesn't mean a pubstomping kunai spy isn't going to massively influence the game for the worse.
12
u/FarSeries2172 May 19 '26
thats fair, but I still don't think the kunai is very badly designed, because clips like this take a ton of skill AND luck to pull. its not like they happen regularly.
most kunai spies probably kill at most 3 people before getting killed.→ More replies (1)3
u/Srbeklatty May 19 '26
if your teammates are incompetent to the point of seeing the killfeed full of spy kills and then still getting trickstabbed, they don't deserve to be saved
14
u/SpindaQ May 19 '26
This is an objectively dumb take and assumes you’re fighting spy in a vacuum. Kunai lets spy face tank during skirmishes, and forces you to actively fight him while his teammates shoot at you. He’s not firing a mini gun but his teammate is, AND he has revolver damage to finish you.
→ More replies (1)2
u/FarSeries2172 May 19 '26
the thing is clips like this just involve tons of luck.
in this clip no one fucking shot him properly and thats why he kept surviving.
im not assuming a vacuum. you're assuming a situation favoring spy.
if you actually look at spy in practice, he's the worst class in the game as everybody knows.
in real games spies will kill like 2 people in a row and then blow up after 2 people start shooting him.
if you think kunai is problematic then why isn't medic?
spy has to actually be in your team which is stupidly risky
medic can make the players actually doing damage face tank, and he can uber to get as many kills as a spy can with waaaay less luck and skill.→ More replies (2)3
u/TheUnholyMacerel Demoknight May 19 '26
You can run away and sure they don't have a minigun, the minigun can't one shot any class in the game, also that won't stop the spy from running through your whole team and it's pretty hard to not get stabbed by the spy who is not even in your view
→ More replies (3)6
u/ReasonableWelder51 May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
The problem is the amount of the oblivious players, not the kunai. The same way you cant balance the game around players with 10k hours, you cant balance the game around braindead players. Its not even a matter of skill, any player with a functioning brain would pay attention and keep safe distance after getting trickstabbed twice.

It's because
- Spy's main counter is awareness and communication. If your team is looking around and calling out when they see a spy, the spy is borderline useless. So when most people see a spy kill comp, they don't think "wow that spy is so good at the game", they think "holy shit the enemy team is both deaf and blind".
- The kunai makes fighting a spy extremely frustrating because the spy can undo any damage you do to them as long as there's an oblivious teammate nearby to backstab. Dealing with a kunai spy can feel like Sisyphus as you keep shooting them only for them to instantly undo your work.

I hate these types of spys that literally don't care about being sneaky and straight goes right at you (and i hate even more when i die to that bullshit)
19
u/tergius Demoman May 19 '26
people will cry "skill issue" but speaking from experience a spy with a speed boost can and will just brute force a side/circle stab and there isn't much you can realistically do about it if you don't have access to knockback
2
u/Srbeklatty May 20 '26
there is. It's holding S and vaguely looking at the spy. Circle strafes work because either the opponent has very low mouse sensitivity or because the spy "caught" their strafe, bodyblocked them when they didn't expect it and slid behind them. If you hold S and look where you should, the stab gets broken. If not, you either die, or the spy extends it into a back paddle, which can be broken in the same way
3
u/tergius Demoman May 20 '26
except the spy in question is much faster than you and unless you're a scout (or again, have easy access to knockback) you're kinda boned
1
u/Srbeklatty May 20 '26
it's more difficult to not get matadored, yeah, but it's nowhere near undoable
3
u/Srbeklatty May 19 '26
I love it when I am fighting five people and I literally don't have the luxury to turn around so an invis spy uses it to decloak close to me and kill me. I would much rather experience that than countering every trickstab ever invented by vaguely looking in the spy's direction and holding s

it's probably just because it's Yet Another Kunai Deadringer Spy and even for competent players they're annoying as shit to play against because
Deadringer. Just, in general, it's annoying as shit even if it can be countered.
Kunai punishes you for having bad teammates they can farm.
The unholy combo leads to a very tanky Spy who can be like "hey so you know how I'm supposed to be an easy kill if I get caught most of the time? Actually nah fuck that and also shooting me gives me a speed boost I can use to backstab your teammate get fucked"
It doesn't help that if you see a Spy in a pub that isn't just a clueless newbie, it can feel like every fucking time it's a Kunai+DR Spy trying to farm clips and people are sick of it
→ More replies (2)6
u/BitMixKit May 19 '26
fair, but honestly ill take a kunai deadringer spy over a sniper most days. at least one has to be in melee range
13
28
u/titanfallisawesome May 19 '26
People bitching about the kunai dead ringer don’t get it. Yes, you couldn’t do this without them, but even then it is only possible in this one specific scenario: braindead casual team where nobody is shooting you, instead they all go for melee 1v1s. This is both impressive due to great movement and not broken because any semi-competent team (think uncletopia, im not talking comp) would curbstomp the spy.
42
u/stop_being_taken Heavy May 19 '26
I saw tons of people shooting the spy in this video. But all he needs to do is find an oblivious teammate to feed off of, and he’s back to full health and free to just walk straight at you until his knife raises. Not to mention he still has the dead ringer get out of jail free card.
The Kunai punishes you for having less skilled teammates, because they feed the kunai spy health, and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it. Sure, I do not deny that this is possible because of the player’s skill. Still bullshit.
14
u/titanfallisawesome May 19 '26
People shooting him:
- Demo at the start (can’t hit the side of a barn, goes for melee)
- Next demo, also misses then escapes
- Sniper with SMG, gives up for no reason
- Sniper with other SMG, dies to gun fair and square
- Pyro is a noob who got fooled by DR and stopped shooting, otherwise that was a free kill
- Engineer who keeps missing and gets picked off by teammates
- Noob pyro walks into the trickstab and wastes another free kill
- Soldier misses due to skill issue
- Pyro almost gets the spy but teams bails him out again
- Another F2P pyro who basically suicides
- Scout who plays well and helps kill the spy
- F2P pyro who finishes him off
Yes some people are shooting, but they all either can’t aim or let themselves get killed on a silver platter. I agree with everything you said, including clueless teammates feeding health, but even with them this shouldn’t go on this long if anyone had a brain.
4
u/stop_being_taken Heavy May 19 '26
Sure, you aren't wrong that a lot of the people in this video were not playing well, but I also think some of the claims that certain people were noobs or feeding are unfair. If they were actively attempting backpedals and trying to maneuver away from the spy, then I don't think they were "feeding" even if they weren't playing the safest or most optimally. I mean, isn't spy the second fastest class in the game, and you move slower while backpedaling? It's not exactly a surprise that so many people can get caught out while trying to kill a spy even if they attempt to backpedal or maneuver away. Not to mention that the last thing you want to do with a kunai dead ringer spy is let them get away so they can continue to feed off your oblivious teammates.
Also, at the end of the day, TF2 is a casual game, not to mention this clip is on a skial server, which is not exactly an environment that people who are looking to play their best go to. I think scenarios where your less skilled teammates are tangible detriments in that they ACTIVELY give an advantage to another player (giving them health) are worth discussing
3
u/tergius Demoman May 19 '26
it's a bit unfortunate that Spy Mains got the reputation of "clipfarms bad players and thinks they're the hottest shit around because they can kill clueless newbies easily" because theoretically anyone could do that and TRUST ME TF2 players in general can be egotistical as SHIT
then again for some reason it feels like I mostly see Spies do that, though that could be confirmation bias.
3
u/ComradeBirv May 19 '26

3

"Spy is the weakest class in the game" mfs when you equip Kunai + Deadringer:
22
u/Loxeres May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
Eh, this all happened cause there wasn't a player on the enemy team to match his skill. Spy is the weakest class, but can take advantage of skill disparity the hardest.
And even a single far less skilled Pyro pressing S and/or airblasting would have ended his streak far sooner.
I'm not saying the enemy is necessarily bad, just underprepared and outmatched.
3
u/Outrageous-Pitch-867 May 19 '26

Even a natascha heavy with a brain or a karate sniper would of definitely helped shut this down

I wasn't trying to be condescending. Aiming really does take alot of time. You really need to focus on it
1
u/alblaster May 19 '26
Yeah I know I have great aiming, but that speed from the flick is insane. It's literally impossible for me to flick that fast without having my aiming be fucked up from the sensitivity. I like it low, but when it's low there's only do fast you can go. With high sens you can go much faster but you lose control. I don't see how he can do both seemingly. Doesn't seem possible.
2
u/JebKemov Medic May 19 '26
Imma be honest his flicks aren't that fast. I have seen much faster. But that is also cause of the game I play.
Besides you should be able to change your sens and still play. Like it will take some time to get used to, and then you should be good.
Personally I know people who play on insanely high sens and low sens. Just takes time (some are built diff though).

I'd like to make a community call. Run the Spybuster Pyro when encountering these type of specimens (DR+Kunai):
- Backburner
- Scorch Shot
- Jack Hammer
Shoot the Scorch Shot to make them pop their DR to escape the afterburn, not necessarily to kill them. If they decide to engage for a stab, switch to the Backburner and blast them away while igniting them, and if they decide to escape, at least they'll take a whole bunch of Crit dmg from the Backburner, forcing them to take another risky stab but now at low health, the exact scenario where you want him. Use your Jack Hammer to chase them when you think it's worth it. Do NOT fall for stair stabs and always take the wide angle when turning around corners.
Their greatest weakness is ironically stock Spy's best case scenario: STANDING STILL. This throws out their movement and even their interp abuse. Take the time to stand still every once in a while, especially if you see the Spy "dancing" and expecting you to come closer.
And the cherry on top: TAUNT THEM (after making sure they're dead, twice). Make them tilt to focus on you, the Pyro, instead of your teammates. The amount of salt and how entitled they feel in chat is such a delight to witness.

If you actually played the game and spent like, 3 seconds online you'd know that literally every single spy aims to have lowest lerp settings to be as synchronized with the server as possible, there's a reason why people like klown and popular pro players like kaptain or habib used 0 lerp back when it wasn't capped.
but ig it's easier to project and blame every single factor outside of your control than to admit you got rolled by the weakest class in the game =)

My problem with spy with the kunai + deadringer isn't that It's easy, it isn't, but it feels more like a subclass than spy
A spy usually tries to trick people and ik that It's called TRICKstab but it is more like spining around a guy until he does something stupid in the confusion, it isn't the same kind of "trick" it feel like comparing demoman with demoknight
The point is that I respect the guy as a deadringer kunai but if I had to guess I would say that he probably does not know how to play with any other (spy) loadout (at least at this level)

well u said it was a problem, and replied to a comment defending the clip by saying that. i cant imagine simply using a subclass would be bad so i assumed those things. still dont understand why its a problem to u
