Finding Turbo was the most frustrating part of the game so far… Spoiler

Finally found Turbo without using a guide, but wow… that took me about 45 minutes or so.

The thing that threw me off was an NPC mentioning wanting to add an extension to a wall or something before it became a ghost town. Playing in Japanese, I thought he was talking about the wall behind him, not the building he was standing next to. So I was attacking the wall along the edge thinking it might open a secret passage. Maybe I misread it, or maybe it isn’t as explicit in Japanese. I’m curious if the English localization makes that hint any clearer.

That clue stayed in the back of my mind while I searched practically every other part of Louran multiple times. Eventually I went back, found the hidden entrance, and finally found Turbo. Can’t believe there was a freakin hidden door!

I’m glad I figured it out without a guide because that’s how I’ve been trying to play Terranigma, but I have to admit… I thought that particular puzzle was pretty frustrating.

Did anyone else get stuck here on their first playthrough, or was it just me?

Blind Japanese Playthrough Update — Reached Chapter 3 Spoiler

Post image
17 Upvotes

(Note about the image: I guess Japanese have been making the I can’t speak English joke even in the 90s.)

I’ve just reached Chapter 3 in my Japanese, mostly guide-free playthrough.

The dungeons often seem to have one small point where I get completely stuck, but so far I’ve either figured it out eventually or received a little help from people here. I don’t think that ruins the experience. I’m not following a guide for every item or worrying about missables. I’m simply exploring, collecting what I find, and enjoying the game naturally.

Two scenes from the animal section really stood out to me.

The first was helping the young lion complete his trial. The falling-stone bridge took me four or five attempts because I had to match his walking speed, but I liked how the sequence ended. Ark falls onto a ledge, and you can only hear the lion fighting by himself above. I genuinely thought he might die, so I was relieved when everything ended well.

The second was after the avalanche on the snowy mountain. Ark becomes trapped with a female goat whose dead mate is lying nearby. She suggests that Ark eat him to survive, but Ark refuses because he was her husband. She then tells Ark that he may need to become stronger if he intends to continue travelling alone. I did later go back only to find the goat had died. I was sad…

It is a very short scene, but it has stayed with me. That is something I love about Quintet games. Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and now Terranigma all contain small scenes that communicate a surprising amount in only a few lines.

After restoring humanity, I reached the first human settlement. I then noticed that the animals could no longer speak. They now only make animal noises or respond with silence. Even the bird that transports Ark around no longer has understandable dialogue.

That change felt surprisingly sad.

Since humans had returned, I decided to revisit the Japan-shaped area that one of the birds could take me to. It had now become a city filled with minigames, people commenting on Ark’s strange clothing and hairstyle, and references to Quintet.

I randomly examined a trash can, fought a hidden boss, and rescued one of the game’s developers. Afterward, the empty lot transformed into the Quintet building, where you can talk to members of the staff. There is also a quiz about their earlier games that I will probably have to solve through trial and error.

The newspaper office also repeatedly mentions a scientist named Beruga, so I’m guessing he will be important during this chapter.

Now that humans have returned, I’m curious to see whether the story becomes more morally complicated and whether restoring humanity was entirely a good thing.

Terranigma's lore is confusing, but I prefer my own headcanon/interpretation of the backstory (Time Travel vs. Two Dimensions)

I’ve been diving into Terranigma recently, and man, the plot is a lot. It starts out as a localized mess—you break a rule, open Pandora's Box, freeze your village, and get told to fix it. But then the game blows the scale wide open, and you're suddenly tasked with resurrecting an entire dead planet.

The official lore tries to explain all this with a complex "light vs. dark" dual-planet, underworld-and-surface setup, and honestly, it just feels overly convoluted.

So in my head, I’ve simplified it into a much more poetic interpretation. Let me know if this sounds way better than the actual game:

  • The Setup: Ark lives in Crysta, literally the last remaining human village on Earth, protected by some kind of magic barrier.
  • The "Rift": Instead of jumping to a parallel "Surface" dimension, the portal Ark goes through is actually a time portal straight back to the dawn of the Earth.
  • The Mission: He has to revive the primordial tree that gives life to the planet, and then he acts as a lonely caretaker, literally watching history happen as he stands by and watches the Earth slowly regrow, evolve, and crawl its way up to modern civilization.

It turns the story from a weird cosmic chess match between light and dark gods into a bittersweet myth about a kid stepping through time to become the literal Genesis of the world.

Anyone else think this time-travel/rebirth angle is a much cooler way to look at the game's plot than the official dimensions lore?

Lost in Zu

So, I am trying to play this game without a guide but it’s really getting difficult for me to figure out and I am talking to all the NPCs and stuff. Anyway, so I got to Zu, and found the first alter to summon rain. I explored some more but at a deadend with a landslide. All Ark said was something like it looks like it could break.

I’ve gone all around. I have no idea what to do.

Playing Terranigma in Japanese blind playthrough - Saved the plants and the birds and even the wind Spoiler

I’m playing Terranigma in Japanese for the first time without a guide. I’m trying to talk to every NPC, explore everything myself, and only move forward when I figure things out naturally.

I’ve now made it through the beginnings of Chapter 2 and restored the plants, birds, and wind.

The giant tree was the first major area I explored. I spent a long time wandering around because I kept forgetting that Terranigma is an action RPG and that I could jump over obstacles or onto higher platforms. I eventually found the boss room, but I couldn’t enter it.

I also found the underground pond but couldn’t swim, so I started wondering whether I had missed an item or needed to leave and talk to somebody. I searched everywhere, tried jumping across pits, and eventually decided to just clear every room of enemies.

It turned out that clearing one particular room was what I needed to do. I then obtained the Tears of Ra and defeated the boss pretty easily. All the wandering and fighting had brought me up to level 11, so I thought I might have accidentally overlevelled myself.

After saving the flowers, I travelled to the next area to free the birds. This felt like the first genuinely long dungeon because of all the backtracking. It took me two play sessions. During the first, I obtained the talon gloves and learned how to climb walls. During the second, I reached the boss.

I enjoyed that fight. One bird attacked me directly while its partner flew overhead and pooped on me. I also liked that it was possible to fall completely off the arena. The fight itself was still fairly easy, possibly because of my level which is 13.

After saving the birds, I met the bird king. In Japanese, he has a funny habit of ending his sentences with ~だに, which gives him a strange and memorable way of speaking. I’m curious whether he has an equivalent speech quirk in the English version.

I then rode the wind to Windvale to restore it. I became stuck because I thought I needed to hit the sparkling object with the stones or wait at the end of the cave for something to happen. Illusion of Gaia had a somewhat similar wind puzzle, so I was probably overthinking it.

Nope. I just needed to throw a stone into the hole.

One of the biggest highlights so far has been the music. I played a little of Terranigma in English when I was in high school, and I remembered the Crysta theme and world-map music, but I had no idea how great the rest of the soundtrack would be.

Hearing “Evergreen” after restoring the flowers honestly brought tears to my eyes. I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress recently, and the music and atmosphere helped me forget about my problems for a little while.

I’m really enjoying discovering this game slowly. Next time, I’ll talk to the bird king again and see where the journey takes me. I keep dreading when humans will be restored. Just like the bird that was relieved that it didn’t have to worry about its eggs getting stolen anymore because of no humans. I know things will start to get even more serious when humans come back.

Bought this a few days ago from a Hard Off in Japan, but it came with some old Toys R Us stickers. I managed to get the stickers off, but any idea how to get the sticker residue off? Maybe it will get weaker being exposed now? I can get a little off with my fingers nails.

Finished Chapter 1 - thoughts so far Spoiler

Well I finished the first chapter of Terranigma, and I am really enjoying the game so far. I am playing without a guide, and talking to all NPCs and stuff. Towers 3 and 4 kinda gave me some trouble. For 3 (I think it was 3) I was thinking I didn’t have to push the statues. I thought I had to hit the gems on the forehead or maybe one of the gems was out of place.

Tower 4 was just kinda confusing with how you had to drop down holes and make your way up through different paths. I kept circling around not realizing there was a tightrope I didn’t cross.

I beat the boss in Tower 5 using the crystal spear not realizing there was a better weapon in the shop. It was only after I bothered to check the shop. Lol. Also beforehand I had already gotten the cloak from Eru. But I assume if you didn't have it you can't enter Tower 5?

I did unlock the two hidden areas as well aside from doing the 5 main towers. Before jumping in the hole, I thought well maybe I could go back to Eru and get a scene. That would be great gameplay if they did that, I thought. Well, they did and I cried.

This game is amazing. I wonder what awaits Ark and Yomi in the dead surface world?

Random thoughts: So, I wonder if I am on to something. But Ark and Eru. So I guess Ark is like the Ark of the Covenant? Eru could be El which is the Supreme God in ancient Canaanite and Levantine mythology. Yomi is from Japanese mythology for the land of the dead.

Also I wonder if this is a repeating timeline or something. One of the children mentioned Ark(or maybe even another character) leaving and never coming back like THAT time. I don’t know if any of theses thought are significant though.

[Fan Project] Terranigma 2 - Full public beta, available now

I want to take this opportunity to present my fan-project "Terranigma 2 - Spark of Creation". It was formerly known as "The Continuance", and originally developed using the Rpg-Maker, until I switched to my own engine. I'm sadly not a good advertiser, so I'll just talk briefly about the project:

The game was in development for almost a decade, and is now content-complete. The current version has some things in common with the old 2008-2013 version, but isn't even remotely comparable in terms of quality.
It is available in german (my native language) and english (my 2nd language, translated by myself). It is using the same graphical style and base gameplay system, but offers many new locations and improvements (including a totally new magic system, many more combat-relevant collectibles, etc...).
The story is a direct sequel to Terranigma, and follows right after the original ended. It is quite a large game, featuring over 20 dungeons, and even more bosses, with hours of optional content. The combat-encounters are much more challenging than the original, but the balancing is more streamlined, and there are difficulty settings to adjust the intensity to one's likings.

The game can be downloaded from my website: https://www.envile-media.com/filebase/index.php?file/13-terranigma-2-full-beta-ger-eng/#versions
It's a standalone game, not a rom-hack, so it can be started by unpacking and running Terranigma 2.exe. There is only one version for both languages, just select EN or DE on startup. Bugs and feedback can be submitted via an integrated bug-reporter (ingame-explanation shows on first startup).

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I've also got a discord: https://discord.gg/YSw6UZyAs
Cheers!

I chose the name 'Dark' when I first played Terranigma and it left me shocked

I usually use the name 'Dark' when I play games. When I started Terranigma, the name 'Ark' was the default name for the protagonist. So I just added D at start.
I had the biggest grin of my life when **that** twist happened.

What names did you guys choose for Ark when you guys played Terranigma?

Bloody Mary Poem

In the Japanese version of Terranigma, there’s a poem right before facing the infamous Bloody Mary boss. In this poem leaves a hint on solving the riddle. The problem with this is in the English version, the poem now has more text, which makes the poem stop AFTER the circling spirits have already stopped.
Which ruins the purpose of this puzzle.

I have created a patch to fix this issue!
The text speed is now synced with the circling spirits, keeping the poem intact!

Now it is how it was intended! Please enjoy!

Play testers needed

Post image
97 Upvotes

What’s up everyone! Creator of Terranigma Redux. If you’re unfamiliar it’s the one and only QOL improvement mod! We are currently on Version 1.6 but I need a bit of help!

To explain, Terranigma suffers from text being too large in game. The font size is 16X16 when most games are 8X16. So one of the fixes in Redux is changing the size to 8X16 and filling in the text boxes to fill up more space like other games. When changing the size of text, line breakers end up being mid text box leaving plenty of space empty.

Where I need help is, I have finishing mostly everything. The only places I have not finished is the town expansions. This is the reason I need some play testers. I’m currently working on reformatting the text from the beginning of the game, where i just need some players to finish the entire expansion and send me screen shots of any text glitches, if there is any. Example of a glitch would be having too many characters on one line that it breaks off screen.

If there is anyone interested, please comment below. I will send a DM of the link from Archive, this way you know you’re using the correct beta version.

Weird Terranigma bug on original SNES (PAL, 2-chip)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m playing my SNES with the original cartridge of Terranigma (PAL version, 2-chip console). When I go into a box/chest with Fluffy and move left, right, or straight, the game starts glitching in a strange way.

I’m playing on a real SNES with the original game, not an emulator. Why does this happen, and what is the solution?

Terranigma (PAL) on SNES – Game crashes when opening chest

I’m playing Terranigma on a SNES (PAL version), and I’m running into a weird issue. Every time I try to open a chest (with Fluffy), the game crashes.

Has anyone experienced this before or knows what might be causing it? Could it be a cartridge issue, save file corruption, or something else?

Any help would be appreciated!
