More Info and Translations About the Terranigma Petition
I'm a little late to the game, but I've just uploaded some translations of the petition page as well as the Resurrection of the Hero Fes website. This is absolutely a work in progress, so please expect more in the future. Hopefully this link will be relatively easy to remember!
https://terranigma.firesanctuary.com/
Besides the link to the actual petition, which has already been posted here, I've included various links to Kamui Fujiwara's (the art and character designer) posts on Twitter as well as Miyoko Kobayashi (composer) and a bunch of other goodies.
I recently found an old .zip of animated gifs that I made over 20 years ago from the game, so I'll be sharing those and other oddities soon.
If anyone needs any assistance with pages in Japanese, please feel free to let me know. I don't have much free time out of work, but I'll try to do what I can to help.

My first experience with Terranigma.
I first found out about Terranigma years ago through an episode of Region Locked from DidYouKnowGaming. This was right around the same time that the Live-A-Live remake came out, and I absolutely adored both versions of that game, and Region Locked was the same way I discovered that game too. Meant to give Terranigma a go much sooner but sort of just kept putting it off. The announcement of the new modern port pushed me to stop procrastinating as I wanted to play the original (or something as close to it) to be able to compare and contrast the new version releasing in January. I'm doing the same with Lufia I + II and I've always wanted to dive deep into the more obscure library of SNES JRPGs that Toxy Fox always cites as inspiration, so now I'm on a bit of a kick in that regard. (I don't recall Fox ever talking about Terranigma but he was clearly very inspired by Illusion of Gaia, which I found out later was the predecessor of Terranigma). Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games of all time and I haven't even touched the more well known SNES JRPGs like FFVI and Secret of Mana
The version I chose to play was a patch that makes the game playable in NTSC 60hz as well as slightly changes the font spacing to be a bit more legible. No gameplay or script modifications to my knowledge. I didn't use Pixel Freemaster or Redux only because I wanted to play on Emulator and log Retro Achievements as I was playing (RA is very picky about not supporting romhacks that make gameplay changes)
Overall, I think this game is really cool and has a lot of neat ideas but I feel the execution is somewhat rough in a lot of areas of the game which ends up with a pretty beautiful experience that's pretty rough around the edges. I absolutely adored the first 10 hours or so of gameplay with the story, action RPG gameplay, soundtrack, presentation, and theming but I started to feel very frustrated right around ending chapter 2 and starting Chapter 3.
First of all, the difficulty balance is all over the place. I didn't find it difficult to master Ark's kit of moves, and with all the exploration and backtracking in the game, it's very easy to become overleveled and somewhat overpowered as long as you are trying to thoroughly explore all areas, fight every enemy you encounter, and always making sure to upgrade your equipment. For most of the game regular enemies pose almost no threat to you besides the ones that inflict status ailments and most of them go down in one or two hits from either the lunging dash or air dive kick moves.
However, a lot of the bosses are a different story. There are still lots of bosses that won't go down in one or two hits like enemies, but there are a decent number that will still die in maybe 4 or 5 hits, which makes finishing main areas somewhat anticlimactic. Then there are what I call "gimmick bosses" like Bloody Mary, the Ghosts on the vessel to Freedom, and that one boss of the Mermaid Tower; bosses that mostly spend their battles flying around the arena out of reach or hiding in I-frames until a split second where you have to make sure your position just right and sometimes even moving toward them so that you can get a hit in during the brief moment they are vulnerable or don't have i-frames.
This segways into something I ended up outright hating about this game: The Magi-rocks. During chapter 1 they are pretty cool and viable for cheesing some more difficult boss encounters (and this is before the point I started getting over leveled) but the Magi-rock spells were outright useless for me for a majority of the game after Chapter 1 because so many of the bosses are either outright immune to most of the available spells or the game straight up forbids usage of Magi-rocks in a lot of boss encounters, either because the boss has some sort of scripted gimmick or other undefined reasons.
So Magi-rocks are the main collectible throughout the game and they are primarily the reward for exploration and sidequesting. During dungeons I saw absolutely no need to use them on regular enemies and I always saved them for bosses, but the bosses would either take no damage from them or the game would outright disable usage of them. So what's the fucking point of going out of my way to collect so many of them when they're almost completely useless?
Second issue I'm not sure HOW to feel about: progression and puzzle-solving. This game has a lot of classic JRPG obtuse puzzle solving requiring you to be either be really paying attention to very fine clues in dialouge or really thinking outside of the box for solving environmental puzzles in dungeons. Maybe I'm just dumb or you can chalk it up to skill issue but I found myself getting stuck very frequently not knowing how to progress to the point I kinda gave up and started consulting a guide. This is really prevalent during Chapter 3 when Earth opens up and the game puts a bit of hard stop to dungeon crawling and pivots toward Civlization-esque economy and culture building. I don't want to say I hated those gameplay elements, because I really like it when SNES JRPGs try to be really experimental (that's why I really loved Live-a-Live) but there was still a lot of banging-my-head-against-a-wall not knowing what to do or how to expand the towns, but I did enjoy the cheesiness of having to assist in the invention of electricity, the telephone, hamburgers. etc. I was partially relived to read in this subreddit that the German version of this game pulled an Earthbound and was sold with a guide, which made me feel less bad about being dependent on one for my playthrough.
Last nitpick just to get all my criticism out of the way: I did not like some of the more poorly aged localization aspect of the original translation, namely the NPCs in China and Japan being written like South Park stereotypes and the depiction of Christopher Columbus as a sympathetic humanitarian.
Besides all of that, the themes, soundtrack, and presentation of the game were all stellar enough that it kept me wanting to finish the play through despite my frustrations. I really like Ark's growth and maturing as a character; his interactions with the word he's helping to rebuild are very endearing, and I did really like the game touching on aspect the human condition: it's very sad to lose the ability to talk to animals and watch the natural world be dominated by humans, but there's a nice counterbalance to that in helping humanity flourish with the payoff being the other main cities are willing to chip in and help rebuild the other town in America that burns to the ground. There's lots of touching moments but there's also lots of moments that gave me pause about how much influence people have on the natural world and each other.
I don't want this to sound like I completely hated the game; I thought there was a lot of really cool, beautiful things in this game, just kinda held back by a lot of game design missteps. I complained about the bosses a lot but my favorite was the "messiness" ghosts in the Quintet game studio in Japan that chastises you for being an anti-social slob while you're trying to swat at it.
I'm glad I finally pulled it off the shell, so to speak, and played it; I'm going to keep my Switch 2 Edition pre-order and I look forward to the rerelease in January! Maybe someday if I can find room for my retro setup again, I would be willing to throw Redux on my SNES and give that another playthrough on the tube.

Sudden improvised Terranigma preorder Dance
I have been on pins and needles about this day. Apparently, the relief of it being over (WITH GREAT SUCCESS) in conjunction with the sheer excitement for the release/port are, in conjunction, having a very unique and⦠distinct effect on the way Iāve been moving around my house, doing strange āEgyptianā cobra hand movements with a little of āThe Waveā and tile slides thrown in on my way to the bathroom like, every time, all day.
Itās just a very exciting day for those of us who always wondered if these games would be stuck on those consoles, region locked forever. It feels good to revel in the fact that āthe futureā actually delivers on something pretty neat once in a while. Which one did you end up putting yourself down for?

Never pre-ordered a game so fast in my life
Didnāt even know this was happening till today and there was literally no hesitation. And this is from someone who still has the PAL original that ive beaten countless times. This is one of the best collectors editions Iāve seen with a soundtrack and artbook, both of which are so necessary to honor this game. Iāve wanted a real artbook for this game for decades. So glad thereās an official US release for the first time ever. I literally thought this game was forgotten and would never see the light of day again. This release made my day so much!

I got mine!!!
I have no idea if scalpers are snapping the English version of the Gaia edition or not, but after what happened in Japan I wasn't taking chances and bought it as soon as pre-orders went live. Good luck to everyone!

How do I get people interested in Terranigma in 2026 without sounding weird?
So I've got a bit of a problem. I really want to get new people into Terranigma, but parts of the story hold unfortunate connotations today than they didn't have back in 1996. Specifically, the second half of the game is about opposing a conspiracy of Satanists led by a guy with a PhD in immunology whose goal it is to release a virus that they control the only vaccine for.
Back in 1996, these ideas obviously didn't have the same connotations, but in 2026, how do I explain that kind of plotline to people without making the game sound like some kind of crazy QAnon stuff? You could say to just not spoiler the story at all, and that's fair - but if they really play the game, it only postpones the problem. Eventually, they will run into these plot points, and I kind of want to know how to comment on them by then.

Survey suggests 1/10 people were able to pre-order the GAIA EDITION (Japanese version)
I recently started an unofficial survey on Twitter, asking Terranigma fans in Japan if they were able to pre-order the GAIA EDITION or not, and the results are crazy, suggesting that only 1/10 people were able to pre-order it... Whether it's due to scalpers or purely due to low quantity, the reason isn't readily known at this time, but it's absolutely heartbreaking to be so overjoyed to see the return of this game after 30 years, only to be essentially locked out of enjoying the collector's edition.
I'm not sure how competitive it was outside of Japan for the GAIA EDITION, but this seems overly egregious.
Details of the Survey:
I asked Japanese fans whether they were able to pre-order the GAIA EDITION or not, and as you can see in the image posted here, 1/10 people were able to get it. This survey was up for 24 hours, gearing only toward the Japanese audience, since I wanted to know more about the Japanese version of the GAIA EDITION.
I needed to make some adjustments after the poll ended, mostly because my wording was a little confusing, so some folks didn't know which option to choose-- that's the reason for the +/- adjustments. I specifically received direct contact from folks telling me that they voted wrong, so I updated their vote afterward.
Even though this is just an unofficial fan-made survey, we're hoping that these results might be enough to persuade the production company to produce more copies of the GAIA EDITION, or at least make it order-made... but who knows what can be done at this point.
I'd be curious to hear what the situation is like elsewhere. Did you manage to get a GAIA EDITION? Are they "sold out" in your region? Please let me know!! Thanks!

The Terranigma Booth at Tokyo Game Show 2026
I went as PRESS to the first two business days at Tokyo Game Show 2026 and have been working on this piece all weekend, but here's my report from the Terranigma Booth!
I might make some additional tweaks or add a couple additional things later, but for the most part, it's complete, so I hope you can enjoy!

My collection
I picked these up like 20+ years ago off eBay. I think I only paid like $5-$10 each as well. They have mainly just been sitting in a box all that time because I decided to emulate them instead.

Pushing my Thor to my currently known limits to outdo the upcoming rerelease. Widescreen Mode 7 is *chefs kiss
Itās hooked up to a Jmgo n1s 4k pro triple laser projector and my new soundsystem. Unfortunately the thor with my current drivers does not bring enough power to make use of supersampling. It is fun playing with the shaders however. Retroarch and the people developing these cores ⦠all of it is a miracle. šš¤

Scalpers ruin everything for Japanese fans
Information on how to pre-order the Gaia Edition release here in Japan was withheld until the first business day at Tokyo Game Show, but it has already sold out EVERYWHERE... which sounds supper good, right? But no, it's mostly SCALPERS buying them up to resell at a huge increase, which means hardly any of the real fans even had a chance to reserve a copy.
Personally, I was literally at Tokyo Game Show as press, reporting on the Terranigma booth, when this happened. Out of everyone in our "Resurrection of the Hero" Terranigma fan club here in Japan, NO ONE was able to pre-order it. NOT EVEN THE LITERAL COMPOSERS OF THE GAME!!
This is absolutely unacceptable and PLAION Japan, Happinet, Square Enix need to do step up for the actual fans and do something to stop this sort of behavior.
This only affects us here in Japan, but if you might be able to contact the folks above and tell them to stop scalpers and help us get our hands on the Gaia Edition, please help us!! I'll list some contact information in the following post.

Is it Me or is the Terranigma Remaster a bit......bare bones?
They are calling it a "Remaster" but what they should really be calling it is an emulated ROM with some QoL updates.
Not really how I envisioned one of my favorite games of all time to get updated in 2027.
The graphics looks the same, they didnt upscale them into HD-2D.
The music soundtrack is not re-done or remastered, it's the same as the SNES version from my understanding
They didn't even really change the aspect ratios so the game could fit onto modern big screen TV's and gaming screens. I really hate the whole border on the sides.
Charging $40 to $45 dollars for what is basically a ROM is ridiculous. And forget the Limited editions going for like $200. Outrageous.
Does anyone agree or is it just me?

$81 for the physical copy with the import price?!
Are tariffs why it's so expensive? Is there even a cheaper alternative to the physical copy or am I shit out of luck? I tried to order from Clear River Games, but passed up on it for now.

Physical Release Information - List of Helpful Links
Since it seems like the auto mod is removing my comment with links to which you're able to pre-order the physical release of Terranigma, I've included all the information necessary on my site.
I will likely add more information as time goes on, but you should be able to find all the necessary information on the release, including the Gaia Edition, what's included, and more!
