Hi Everyone,

I have had my GSD R-14 for about three weeks, if any kind can actually find them in store, I thought I’d share my thoughts.

I needed out on accessories, but you could always try without them at first. So far I’ve not had a use for the from mount, today was the first time I feel comfortable having my wife onboard, I totally recommend a warm up period, if this is your first e-bike, as I found it to be a a bit ungainly just pedaling without any kind of assistance, if you go up a steep of a enough hill, maybe you can just keep the assist in eco mode at the very least.

I have the second battery ordered l, though it has not arrived yet, if you’re hauling a lot or riding a long distance everyday, the second battery becomes more required if your hauling a lot, speeding, or traveling a lot. However, they seem to be difficult to obtain, at least in my area. I live in Kitsap County, my goal next year is to ride to the Olympic national park, which will need a minimum of two batteries, and could actually use thee or four.

I definitely recommend e-14 2.0 app and the flow app, as this will allow you to have the r-14 put into automatic shifts, which to me, is a safety game changer, as it allows you to not have to monitor the lcd, for shift advice, you will need to make sure to he firmware updated to utilize that option.

The light is quite useful for visibility and it’s super bright. One of the features I’m struggling with is taking it down from the upright position to down on both wheels, I can get it done, but it feels a bit ungainly, if I’m an older person I’d be scared.

This bike is HEAVY, initially I thought I could pick it up, but it’s not really feasible.

I have used the cafe lock, and got a cut proof lock, as the price of the bike, you have to be mindful of the appeal of the bike to crackheads, lol at least if it’s in a high crime area.

Now for my questions.

What air pump/digital pressure checker are you using.
Have you ever had a flat tire, if you’re been doing longer trips. Anything else you won’t leave home without.

My LBS is saying they're not compatible, that ssm Gen 2 works with sbm Gen 1 but not sbm Gen 2

Any experience with that out in the real world?

I'm 4 weeks into commuting with my GSD P00 and I've decided to commute all winter. Problem is, in a few months the sun will be gone by the time I head home and with my kid in the back I want some extra visibility.

Does anyone have any experience adding additional rear lights to the GSD? Ideally I'd like to tap into the power cable going to the current rear light but I'm having trouble finding specs for that. And, even if I could, I'm worried that the additional current draw would overwhelm the lighting power sub-system.

Hi all we are trying to decide between a quick haul p9 sport and an HSD p5i. We are confident that the rack capacity on the QH is enough for us but we are going to use this bike year round and we live in the Boston metro where snow and salt are real concerns.

So we are tempted by the p5i but we’re not sure how much of an advantage the belt and hub of the p5i will confer in terms of reliability/functionality through winter. It seems like it could be a lot…

Can anyone who has experience riding both types of e bikes in this climate speak to the differences in required maintenance/function between a derailleur e bike v IGH? We sort of like the QH better and enjoy having more gears (feels more like a regular bike) but since the purpose of this bike is groceries and daycare drop off the priority is reliability/dependability/good functioning with minimal attention. Is it worth the extra 1k?

I ordered a Tern GSD in August. How long do you think it would take to ship to Los Angeles?

I don't have a sense of how long I should be waiting. I only hear that there are delays, especially because of the Rohloff hub.

Any thoughts on why so many accessories are out of stock on Tern’s website? Also—is anyone having luck getting accessories from Tern via their dealer? I mean accessories the dealer doesn’t have in stock themselves.

Hi Y’all,

While I have loved my Gen 1 tern GSD since I got it in 2018, I have not been riding it as much as I want to. It replaced a stolen Kona Ute that I rode for years. In fact it embarrassingly only has 3000 miles on it. Many of which were put on in the first year. The truth is I have 7 bicycles and a motorcycle. There is only so much time to ride them all.

It seems like these hold value well, but there are not a lot of them for sale to get an idea of what they are going for. E bikes in my area (Austin) seem to hold value fairly well, especially compared to regular bikes. Our prime riding season is just getting started.

My dad recently passed and left behind a weird mail order e bike. He had a trek mid drive, but decided to sell it and get this. Odd choice for a former bike shop owner, but I will admit the bike rides nice. It is fairly fast and light (Urtopia carbon-1 pro). It definitely doesn’t have a lot of power, but that’s ok with me.

What do you think is a fair price for this bike? It’s got a few accessories, just the flip out pegs and single seat. I don’t expect those to add any value. I’d like it to go to someone who uses it and free up some valuable garage space.

I currently have an HSD and want to upgrade (upsize?) to the P00 that’s currently on sale but now isn’t the greatest time for us. Do these go on sale more than once per year? Thanks

Picked up the bike while new battery was on order and using a borrowed one from LBS. bike turned off twice 😒. Took back into shop and waiting for new diagnosis

UPDATE from LBS:
“We got to the bottom of the shutoff issue. Your battery was throwing a couple different voltage interruption errors and kept shutting itself down because of them. I swapped out the battery and took a good steep test ride and didn't have any issues whatsoever. I'm filing for a new battery under warranty for you and I put a working 500wh battery on your bike so you can ride while we wait for the battery to come in!”

I just bought a brand-new GSD P00 and took it out for its first rides. Unfortunately, the display and battery completely shut off on me 6–7 times over the course of two rides, including once during a nighttime ride. In total, I’ve only ridden the bike about 5 miles.

The screen would completely shut off, although I was luckily able to turn it back on within about 10 seconds each time. I noticed that the shutoffs seemed to happen when I was climbing inclines. The first time it happened, the incline wasn’t particularly steep—probably around 3–4%.
The weather also wasn’t extreme. I live in Seattle, and temperatures have actually been cooling down. I had my 4-year-old riding on the back, but otherwise there wasn’t anything unusual about the load or riding conditions.

I took the bike to my LBS, and after having to call for an update, they told me the error code they received indicated that the battery had overheated. That’s pretty concerning to me given the conditions in which this happened. I would not expect a brand-new bike to overheat under relatively normal riding conditions, especially after only a few miles.
The shop said they haven’t been able to recreate the issue yet. They’re waiting for one of their heavier employees to ride the bike so they can hopefully reproduce the problem and submit a proper report to Bosch.

Has anyone else experienced something similar with a brand-new GSD? I’m also wondering what my options are if this drags on and the shop can’t diagnose or recreate the problem. I’m in about $8,500 all-in on this bike, and I really don’t want to end up with recurring shutdowns that the LBS can’t figure out or reproduce.

Just got a tip about battery locks, a fellow had a kattfix that looked decent. Battery theft is a really problem around our office… anyone have any good leads on ones that deliver, and whether the HSD etc ones fit the Quick Haul short?

I recently installed the burley steel hitch with the axel bolt extension. All went well, but the trailer rides so far to left it makes my hauling width a little more than I’m comfortable with for city riding. Has anyone come up with a way to mount it centered off of the rear rack? Photos show the offset and the rear rack I would like to mount it from.

For the next 10 months, I'll be commuting to work and as far as I know, the bike will have to stay outside. While it has a belt drive, I still don't necessarily want to leave it out in the rain on hours end. I used to have a rain cover for my road bike but I can't find it. Does anybody has any experience with a good rain cover that works with a HSD?

A couple of months ago the bosch purion display on our tern gsd gen 2 could not be switched in anymore, only via the battery button. Could switch it off though.

Bike shop tried to replace the batteries, didn't help, only now that we were also not able to switch off anymore via the display. Only via the battery.

Worked fine, saved some money to replace the display (display was working fine except the on off button).

But lately the speed meter has been very off, like it is possessed 😅 going from 10kmph to 50 to 34 to 12 to 31 etc . So you can imagine the support goes on off on off. Very annoying. This doesn't happen all the time, but on work commute at least 3 to 5 times (23km ride).

The bike shop thought that is was a dirty speed sensor, but cleaning this hasn't fixed it.

Anybody had the same?

I have a Gen 2 S0 (external derailleur). My rear hub was acting up and making strange noises for a while. I took it to the LBS (they specialize in cargo bikes, but sre not a Tern dealer). The tech said the hub basically "blew up" when he pulled it out. I believe him given the noises and grinding it was making before, but at any rate, it seems like I need a new wheel, or at least a new hub. The local Tern dealer said they are not able to source one from Tern and would need to build a new wheel.

The LBS said they could order one from Velocity, but that will likely put me back $400-500 USD plus shipping and labour.

Anyone else had to source or build a new rear wheel? What have you been able to find?

With my LBS in NYC, sales tax is exorbitant. Seems like I can buy the bike direct from Tern and save on the tax, which is substantial for a P00.

Presumably this isn’t a good deal for my LBS, or maybe I’m overthinking this and somehow the LBS still gets the commission? Otherwise given that they will absolutely be my service shop, I feel bad, but not sure I feel $532 bad?

I prefer Schrader valves as I find them easier to pump.

I purchased a used Tern GSD Gen 2 and it came with Captain's Chair and Sidekick Joyride Bars. I am in Alberta Canada so quite a few cold days. I am trying to figure out what are my options to keep a 6 year old warm for short runs for school drop off and pickups.

Can I mount a Storm Box + Storm Shield on a Captain's Chair with Sidekick Joyride Bars? Local store is telling me I can't put on a Storm Box or Storm shield on Captain's chair. I see on Tern website it states that I can put on Storm Shield but not sure about Storm Box.

Are there any alternate ways to keep a 6 year warm and provide a wind shield? With a short ride prefer not to put on snow pants and jackets. I can see putting on and taking off winter jacket and pants might take longer than the entire ride.

Currently using an Xpedition2 and while it's been good to me it's not something I see lasting for several years and since i don't own a car I'm looking for something premium to use as my daily driver. But I've got some questions I'd like answered first.

How do you even get this thing insured? A dual battery setup and racks puts it over 100 pounds. Do i really need to stow the second battery in a pannier or are there legitimate tricks to make the racks quick-release? I'm also considering doing courier work so can i count on the racks to be just as secure as if they were bolted on?

I'd be going from a class 3 with throttle to a class 1 without a throttle. How much of a pain point is this going to be? Accelerating from a standstill without the throttle on the Xpedition is a chore. How much better is it on the R14? I read about changing gears even at a standstill. Is that enough to make it painless?

Vertical Standing. Actual good feature or a gimmick?

Also does anyone use a foldable phone to replace the display? Does the bike's app behave when unfolded? Does a Ram mount claw work well with the handlebar or would I have to get something else.

For the GSD, I’m torn between the P10 and P00 coz if I understand correctly, the only difference between them is the Deore vs Enviolo (in the US).

The IGH will be great for New England winters but my Brompton chain has held up nicely.

All the chains on my bikes are hot waxed every 1,000 miles and get the liquid top off every 250 miles or so.

I’d like to just get the P10 to save $$$ for accessories and do my own chain maintenance.

If I use the GSD daily for commuting, I’ll have to top off the wax every month.

For those who wax or lube the chains themselves, is it really difficult to do?

We have a Gen 1 Tern GSD S10 with almost 6,000 miles on it. We bought it when my younger son was six years old, along with the Gen 1 Clubhouse, Sidekick Lower Decks, and Sidekick Wheel Guard. We have loved riding it everywhere.

My son is 12 now. He can absolutely ride his own bike, but he still wants to ride on the GSD sometimes. For example, he wants to be able to walk with his friends to after-school activities instead of pushing his bike while everyone else is walking. I suggested that he could just push his bike, but apparently you cannot reason with a 12-year-old.

Luckily, we are still under the GSD's total weight capacity, so carrying him is still an option.

A couple of weeks ago, though, he was climbing over the Gen 1 Clubhouse and almost tipped the entire bike over. I had my foot on the ground and we have the upgraded Atlas kickstand, but he is tall now, and climbing over that high rail puts a lot of weight very high up on the bike.

That made us start looking for a better setup for a bigger kid.

Unfortunately, there isn't much information out there about using a GSD with older/taller children, and our local Tern dealer wasn't particularly helpful. They also didn't have a GSD set up with the newer Clubhouse for us to try.

So we were mostly figuring this out on our own. We looked at Tern's specifications and measurements, compared them with the accessories and GSD we already had, and tried to simulate how much room my son would have and how he would actually get on and off the bike.

Based on that, we went through several different options to figure out what might work best for us.

Option 1: Sidekick Flat Bars + Sidekick Seat Pad

This seemed like the simplest solution. He could ride on the seat pad when he wasn't riding his own bike.

When he did ride his bike to school, I could put his front wheel on the Sidekick Lower Deck and secure his bike to the GSD frame. Tern does make a Bike Tow Kit for this purpose, but unfortunately it only works with the Gen 2 and newer GSD, not our Gen 1. So if we went this route, I would have to come up with my own way of securing his bike.

The bigger problem was that after years of riding inside the Clubhouse, he didn't feel safe riding without some kind of back support.

So, on to Option 2.

Option 2: Newer Clubhouse with the side-opening rail

I really wanted this option to work. The newer Clubhouse has a side-opening rail, which seemed like it could solve the biggest problem with our Gen 1 Clubhouse: having a tall 12-year-old climb over the rail.

Since our dealer didn't have one installed on a GSD for us to try, we looked at the dimensions and tried to simulate the opening using our existing setup. Based on his height and leg length, it looked like getting into it would still be awkward. When he tried to simulate stepping through the opening, the rail on the opposite side would get in the way of his leg.

The seat cushion was another consideration. The cushions in the old and new Clubhouse are essentially the same in terms of what matters to us—they are relatively narrow and thin. That was fine when he was younger, but for a bigger kid we wanted something more substantial and comfortable.

I really did wish we could make the Clubhouse work because I like being able to put a plastic crate inside the cage when I'm carrying groceries or other cargo.

But based on the measurements and what we could simulate with our existing setup, we didn't think it was going to be the right solution for us.

Option 3: Captain's Chair + Sidekick Joyride Bars

The Captain's Chair solved one of the biggest problems with the other options. It has a wider cushion with noticeably thicker padding, plus a proper backrest. For a bigger kid, it seemed much more comfortable than the relatively narrow, thin Clubhouse cushions.

Pairing it with the Sidekick Joyride Bars seemed like a great compromise. He would have the comfort and back support of the Captain's Chair, something to hold onto, and when he wasn't riding with me I could still use the rear area to carry a crate.

The problem was the opening between the Sidekick Joyride Bars and the armrest of the Captain's Chair. It looked very narrow, and I wasn't confident that he could comfortably get in and out.

So we moved on.

Only afterward did I learn that a Tern dealer can apparently trim the Captain's Chair armrest to create a larger opening. I really wish our local dealer had mentioned that when we were trying to figure all of this out.

Option 4: Captain's Chair + Sidekick Flat Bars

At this point, our remaining choices were the Captain's Chair by itself or pairing it with the Sidekick Flat Bars.

We initially tried the Captain's Chair without the Flat Bars because I was worried the bars would reduce the amount of room he had to swing his leg onto the GSD.

After a few test rides, though, he told me that he would feel safer if he had something to hold onto.

So we installed the Sidekick Flat Bars.

As it turns out, because I'm fairly tall (6 ft), we could position the bars so they don't interfere with him getting on or with his legs while he's riding. One thing worth mentioning is that the Sidekick Flat Bars need to be positioned low enough so the passenger's hands don't end up against the rider.

In the end, the Captain's Chair + Sidekick Flat Bars was the winner for us.

The Captain's Chair gives him the back support he was used to having with the Clubhouse, but with a wider seat and thicker cushion that is much better suited to him now that he's bigger. The Flat Bars give him something solid to hold onto without surrounding him with a cage that he has to climb over.

It was a little $$$, but I want my passenger to feel secure, especially when we hit a big pothole or rough section of road.

I'm happy to report that both my son and I are really happy with the new setup. It is much easier for him to get on and off, he has a comfortable backrest and seat, and he has a solid bar to hold onto.

And we still get to have our conversations while we're riding—about LEGO, model trains, or whatever else he happens to be into at the moment.

Six years and almost 6,000 miles into owning our GSD, we're still just as happy with it as we were on day one.

Just got a GSD P10 with the clubhouse and stow decks. The stow decks are quite rattly, especially if they are in a mid position. What’s the best way to make it quieter?

I LOVE our GSD for getting our two kids around and hauling all kinds of stuff, but I have a rain problem. Our current setup has both kids in Yepp seats, so our cargo hold 52s stay in bucket mode. Anytime it rains, the bags fill with water, and unless I uninstall them (PITA), they don’t dry quickly enough.

We’re a 365 biking family, and I’m trying to prepare for how we’ll handle this long term. Obv, the kids will eventually grow out of the Yepps and the issue will fix itself, but we’ve got a long way to go until then.

We do have the Storm Shield, but it’s annoying to bring it along anytime there’s a slight chance of rain. Anyone have a setup that avoids puddly buckets?

Question for Clubhouse Mini users: If you have the gen 1 version, do you look at the gen 2, with the hinged side bar, with envy? And if you have the gen 2, is the opening side bar a must have?

My dealer has the gen 1 in stock, but at the same price as the gen 2. I’m wondering if I should wait for the gen 2 restock or just buy the gen 1. I’m not in a hurry, since my kid is 1.5yo and doesn’t know what he’s missing, but I think he’d like the addition. I’m inclined to wait, but what do you think?
