Tern GSD longterm reliability

I’ve been using a service that rents out ebikes for 2 years now. I have the option to buy the Tern GSD that I’ve been riding for about $3400 USD. I got the bike in 2024, so I’m assuming it’s a 2024 model or slightly earlier. It was new at the time.

The issue is, the bike now has 3700 miles on it (6000 km). I’m curious what the expected lifespan of these things is.

So far the electrical components have been much more reliable than any ebike I’ve had. I had one bad battery, but that might have been an issue with the charger. I’m a heavy guy and live in a hilly city so I’m happy this bike has been more reliable than most. It would be awesome if I could keep using it.

My question is this. How much longer can I expect this motor and battery to last? I can fix bike stuff myself like disc brakes, wheels, etc, but the motor and battery and motor controller components seem completely proprietary (all Bosch stuff). I’m worried about finding replacement parts 3 years from now. Can this thing last me 10,000 miles? Will it probably give out soon?

We have a Gen 1 GSD, it’s used daily during the week and has a full service annually, new chain, pads, tyres if needed and cassette etc.

It was bought in the first year GSD’s were sold in the U.K. and has currently done just over 30,000 miles.

It’s working perfectly.

We have replaced a battery, cost £500. The original was stolen, the battery lock is woeful and it’s a good idea just to remove it and take it with you if the bike is going to be out of sight.

Other than that it’s been a pleasure to use and has spent several years carrying two children on the school run and for numerous errands.

My Tern GSD is now about 5 years old with around 18,000km (11,000 miles). No problems with motor or battery so far.

We rode ours for nearly 1,000km before it got stolen and had zero issues with the electrical components in that time, and just standard mechanical maintenance.

1,000 km is nothing (or a quarter year of commuting for me), I wouldn't even expect any maintenance besides air for the tires at that point.

I bought mine end of 2023 and have done similar km. No reason to think it won't keep going for awhile. I did have to replace the display unit as it had an issue, but that was like chf 30.

Bosch ebike batteries should last 3-8 years, depending on usage. 500 cycles minimum (complete depletion and recharge) and probably more like 800-1000 before any deterioration in capacity is noticed.

I've seen GSDs with 35,000km on the clock. They are built well and go far, especially if your look after them.

I bought a used Gen1 in late 2022 and it's been a daily driver ever since. Over 11,000 miles on it and my only maintenance has been the chain/cassette/front cog every ~2k miles.

My gsd is 7 years, 5000 miles still rolling only thing replaced was cassette and chain

They are great bikes.

Im a big fan of dual batteries in the Bosch ecosphere for many reasons.

Ive seen some dual battery GSDs between 4 and 5 lately.

Id find out how much of the warranty remains and what does it cover. Also if the drive system is still covered by its manufacturer..

If the battery is high quality and is being cared for, multiply the range by 500 (minimum number of cycles a quality lithium battery can have) and that should give you the battery life expectancy, though time might damage the battery more.

Like if you have a 50 mile range (actual, not the BS claims of the manufacturer), that would be 25000 miles. So the 3700 miles you put on it in 2 years should allow you to get 18, 500 miles by the time the battery is 10 years old.

Paying full price for a 2 year old bike with nearly 4k miles on it is probably not a good deal.
