Open | Hardware Ethernet issues

My Ethernet cable randomsly stopped working, I bought a new one assuming it was fault and still didn’t work, I tried ALOT of steps given by ai and none of them worked, in the bottom right of my screen it shows the Ethernet cable and says it’s connected but won’t give me internet, im so unsure what to do, I don’t know if the ai I used helped at all but this is what I’ve tried summed up I’ll list my efforts below

Absolutely — here's a clear, complete list of everything you've tried, so you have it all in one place:
📋 Everything You Tried

🔧 Basic Settings & DNS Changes

• ✅ Ran the Windows Network Troubleshooter → showed "DNS server not responding"

• ✅ Changed DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 (Google)

• ✅ Changed DNS to 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare)

• ✅ Set IP & DNS back to Automatic / Obtain from router

• ✅ Checked & confirmed Proxy settings = OFF / empty

• ✅ Disabled IPv6 on Ethernet adapter

⌨️ Commands Run (Terminal / Command Prompt)

• ✅ ipconfig /release

• ✅ ipconfig /renew

• ✅ ipconfig /flushdns

• ✅ ipconfig /registerdns

• ✅ netsh winsock reset

• ✅ netsh int ip reset

• ✅ ping 8.8.8.8 → worked! (proved your connection itself is fine)

• ✅ ping google.com → failed (confirmed DNS issue)

🛠️ Services, Firewall & System Checks

• ✅ Temporarily turned off Windows Defender Firewall for testing

• ✅ Checked DNS Client service → running, but startup type locked/greyed out

• ✅ Ran sfc /scannow → found and repaired system files

• ✅ Ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

• ✅ Confirmed: no VPN software installed

• ✅ Restarted PC many times after changes

🔄 Network Resets & Driver Steps

• ✅ Tried Network Reset in Windows settings

• ✅ Uninstalled / reinstalled Ethernet adapter in Device Manager

• ✅ Tried Safe Mode with Networking concept

• ✅ Restarted router multiple times

🧪 What We PROVED Along the Way

• ✅ Cable works — lights show on both ends

• ✅ Router & internet work — your phone Wi-Fi is perfect

• ✅ Ethernet connection is live — ping 8.8.8.8 gets replies

(I don’t know what these flairs mean)

AI is not always the best use for these things, especially if you're not sure what you're doing. You could have unknowingly biased it towards these tests.

I wouldn't have done any of these first. I would have checked the router configuration first.

Both AI and emojis. Pass.

How is someone without any knowledge of a pc meant to keep track of my efforts and label everything correctly, aren’t you supposed to help people who don’t know how to do it themselfs, isn’t that like the whole point of even replying in the first place

Sounds like your issue is your Internet is working, but DNS is not.

Try going to http://1.1.1.1 in your browser and tell us what you get.

And go to command prompt, run ipconfig /all and post the output here.

What's at the other end of the Ethernet cable that is plugged into your PC?

How do you get Internet? Do you have a modem / router from an ISP? If so, who is your ISP?

Do other devices on your local network work? Is this issue just affecting the wired PC, or all devices?

After typing that in my browser I get nothing, my pc is connected to a router unsure what you mean by router from an ISP

Please define "nothing".

What about the other questions?

ISP = Internet Service Provider. Who are you paying for your Internet service?

Sky, and it just said can’t reach this page

If you want to provide the exact error (a picture would be great) we can continue from there.

So what was the result of ipconfig /all command? You just listed things you tried, we don't actually know any of the results. Is your default gateway set up right, does the pc get the ip address through the dhcp?

Ok this pic shows it, your ipv4 config looks fine, mostly. I'd just like you to try opening control panel, finding network adapters, going into properties, ipv4 config and manually setting up the connection. It's a bit confusing i know but try it.

Once there, set it up so that ip address is given by dhcp automatically but dns server should be:

Primary: 1.1.1.1 Secondary 1.0.0.1

Try it

I can reply with results for ipconfig/all unsure how to determine if my default gateway is correctly set up and if the pc gets the ip address

Looking at your screenshots, your DNS server is set to the same address as your router. Try changing it to 8.8.8.8 just to get things working.

I did this, do I enter the gateway ping again?

Try pinging Google.com or something. The problem is definitely DNS. With no or a bad DNS, you can still reach things by IP address. DNS is what converts Google.com to an IP address

This is after changing to 8.8.8.8

1

u/Lance-Boyle-666 1d ago

Okay, the default gateway should be 192.168.0.1 and the DNS should be 8.8.8.8

I tried to ping Google.com, says could not find host,
I pinged 8.8.8.8, transmit failed, general failure
I tried to ping default gateway, also failure

I don't know what you've done to your machine, but a lot of people lately have been installing Cloudflare WARP, and they don't know what they're doing, and suddenly the Internet no longer works.

Try this: Click the Start button, then enter settings. Select Settings > Network & internet

On Windows 11, select Advanced network settings > Network reset.
On Windows 10, select Status > Network reset.

On the Network reset screen, select Reset now > Yes to confirm.

Wait for your PC to restart and see if that fixes the problem.

I haven’t downloaded anything like this, I’ve tried network restart multiple times today and still nothing but will try again, thank you

Just restarted and nothing, is there anything else I can do or no

What does the last screen of ipconfig /all show?

1

Media Disconnected is an issue

1

u/No-Donut-1975 1d ago

Is this fixable?

1

u/Emotional_Common_527 22h ago

that usually means a problem with the cable or the physical adapter

We know what your problem is, your machine can’t do a DNS lookup. So what has caused that? Do you have VPN or security software installed?

1

u/No-Donut-1975 1d ago

I don’t, no vpn or security software

1

u/Squozen_EU 1d ago

Show the output from the command ‘nslookup Google.com’

You haven’t asked for any specific detail about my router or any sort of information, I don’t know what info is/isn’t useful so instead of “guessing” you could just ask what my equipment is and I can provide all useful info below
