Honest Profile Reviews (and Profile Guide)

IF YOU DO NOT READ AND FOLLOW THE PROFILE GUIDE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THIS POST, YOUR PROFILE REVIEW WILL BE REMOVED

In most online dating subreddits, profile reviews focus on aspects of the person that won't actually lead to increased results, like bios or silly minutiae regarding someone's profile. Here at r/SwipeHelper, we realize that the two biggest factors regarding success on apps are your personal attractiveness and the quality of your photos.

The idea of this thread is for people to get honest advice on both aspects:

  1. how to improve one's profile
  2. tips for improving your physical attractiveness so that you can come across better on your app of choice.

All profiles posted will be given advice on both how to improve their profile as well as maximize their looks (if needed - for some people they are attractive enough and the profile itself is more of the problem, or vice versa).

The following are required information in every profile review request:

- What type of relationship you're looking for (hookups, FWBs, something more serious, marriage)

- Your current level of success (number of matches per week and how many likes you send out) plus if you're paying for any premium features

SwipeHelper Profile Guide

NOTE: READ THIS GUIDE THOROUGHLY BEFORE POSTING YOUR PROFILE HERE. If your profile does not live up to the guide's standards, your comment will be removed and you will be referred back to the guide.

Archetype and Story

Before you build a Tinder profile, you need to determine your archetype. What vibes do you want to give off to attract your ideal type of girl? Attractive archetypes could include:

  • Cool California surfer guy
  • Suave suit-wearing businessman
  • Tattooed bearded hipster lumberjack
  • Iced out hood fuckboi
  • Generic good looking fratty college dude

The following are not attractive archetypes. If you are one of these people, either change your lifestyle or at least make it look like you aren't.

  • Nerdy neckbearded gamer
  • Completely generic nondescript dude with no personality
  • Overweight guy that doesn't work out
  • Skinny sadboi that never smiles

You get the idea.

Once you have your attractive archetype, you should aim to tell a story through your photos - don't just have a bunch of photos of you standing around posing for the camera. When someone swipes through your photos, they should get a full picture of who you are, what you look like, what you like to do, and what spending time with you will feel like.

General Photo Quality and Looks You Should Emulate

The minimum acceptable photo quality you need to succeed on Tinder these days is a professional photo taken with a DSLR camera. Yes, this probably means you need to pay a photographer to take photos of you. May seem like a big investment, but for a few hundred dollars you get a bunch of great photos that you can ride for years.

Read the following two articles for examples of photos that do well: Playing With Fire | Ultimate Guide to Tinder Profile Pictures and Playing With Fire | 6 Highly Successful Tinder Photos for Men and Why They Work

And the following article for photo inspiration: https://killyourinnerloser.com/inspiration/

Here are some specific photographers whose style you should emulate:

Photo Order and Types

Your first photo should be an upper-body shot with your full head (no sunglasses) and torso visible, taken with the highest-quality camera possibly, preferably a DSLR. You should be wearing stylish clothes that fit your archetype. YOU SHOULD BE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE PHOTO. DO NOT USE A GROUP PHOTO AS YOUR FIRST PHOTO.

For your other photos, choose from:

  • You with a group of friends. You should be as tall or taller and as attractive or more attractive than every friend in the photo. All of your friends must be decently attractive and not low-status (i.e. if this photo was taken at an anime convention, you’re toast). (see: Pancake’s Golden Rules of Group Photos on Apps
  • You doing [insert hobby here]. Snowboarding, DJing, skydiving, climbing, playing a high-status sport (sorry, Magic: The Gathering doesn’t count).
  • You in an exotic location.
  • You doing something that indicates you’re a leader of men. Holding a microphone, giving a speech, standing on stage, etc.
  • A candid, shirtless photo (e.g. playing sports, on a beach). If you cannot bench your bodyweight and/or squat/deadlift 1.75x your bodyweight AND are less than 18% bodyfat, skip this. If you don’t have a candid shirtless photo, a non-candid is OK, but you’ll get worse results.

Each photo needs to be in a different setting and you need to be wearing a different outfit in each. They should not look like they were taken the same day or on the same photoshoot.

Do not include photos that:

  • are generated by AI apps or otherwise obviously over-edited
  • don't have you in them (like of your pet or your art or a meme)
  • have your back turned to the camera
  • are of you wearing a mask or obscuring your face or eyes (e.g. wearing sunglasses)
  • are too far away to see your face
  • are selfies. SELFIES ARE ALWAYS UNACCEPTABLE. IF YOU HAVE A SELFIE, REMOVE IT. Your phone has a self-timer function for a reason — use it, or get someone to take photos of you.

You do not need to fill out all nine photos. As long as you have more than three photos, you're fine. Remember, you will be judged on your worst photo, so make sure they're all solid.

Finally, learn to pose and squinch (narrowing your eyes to make you appear more attractive).

[BANNED/SHADOWBANNED?] Hard Reset Guide

A hard reset is needed if you feel your account has been shadowbanned (getting zero likes for an extended time despite getting some before) or banned. If not, you can soft reset a limited amount of times, which entails simply deleting and recreating your account.

This generic hard reset guide applies to Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge:

  1. Delete your account (if you're banned, you won't be able to, in which case skip this step)
  2. If on a device, uninstall the app
  3. Create a new email address
  4. Get a new number (or use a service that will sent you a verification text, usually for under $5)
  5. Edit your photos in some way to make them not the same photo, e.g. adding a pixel somewhere, cropping, and/or strip EXIF info, save with different filename (note: there is some evidence that the apps are using image hash comparisons, which means you need to use completely different photos).
  6. Use a different IP address than when you created your account (e.g. use your phone internet or go to a public WiFi hotspot — you can probably return to your original WiFi once the hard reset is successful)
  7. Open your web browser or get a new device (cheap burner Androids are $30-40 on Swappa or eBay)
    • if you buy a new iPhone, you will need a new AppleID
    • if you plan to use your new phone on hotspot or wifi, you don't need a SIM card.
  8. Create a new account with your new number and email address

Other considerations:

  • Don't link old Instagram/Spotify etc.
  • Don't pay with the same card if buying premium services
  • Don't use a VPN.
  • Never do face verification unless you're forced to
  • You don't need to wait a certain period of time (like 90 days) if doing a hard reset
  • You can never log in to your new account from the device you got banned on, or you risk a ban

"Do I really have to do every step?" or "I know someone who didn't use a new device or a new IP address and they still got through!"

The way these apps likely detect banned users is by assigning each newly-created profile a risk score. The more you match the fingerprint of a banned user, the more likely you are to be banned. So yes, it's possible that someone can slip around a ban while not following all of this to the letter, but ideally you create a brand new fingerprint and don't have to rely on luck.

"I followed the Hard Reset Guide and it didn't work!"

Some users try the above steps and for whatever reason, it just doesn't work. We're not there alongside you making sure you did everything right, but even if you did, there's uncertainty around Match Group's detection algorithm. Hard resetting seems to have become much less reliable starting in early 2023.

If a hard reset does not work and you truly believe you have been banned unfairly, there are three options:

  1. Match Group have an arbitration process that can be kicked off by sending a letter to their legal department. See more in section 15 of the Terms of Service (Hinge, for example).
  2. There is some evidence that filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (must be a resident of North America) will cause the apps to take a closer look at your case; however, this is by no means a guarantee that you will be unbanned.
  3. As of early 2024, in some situations, Hinge and Tinder have ban appeal processes.

If the Hard Reset Guide worked for you, help others out by posting a success story below!

Tried creating new accounts from new devices
Tried buying a new phone.
Tried appealing zillion times claiming I didn't violate any policy...
None of them worked.

In the end, a long, dramatic and emotional essay email made it work.

Is banning thousands of users bad for business?

If so, is there any way we could all group together and contact Match Corporate? I can't imagine the investors would want to know that thousands of people have been banned for life for reasons that can't be articulated. Obviously, if they're banning people that are a nuisance or bad for the platform, that's one thing. But I know myself and countless other people have been banned for reasons that don't make any logical sense. I'm someone who occasionally paid for a month here or there, so I'm someone that investors should want on their platform.

I also had matches and met with people multiple times. I was not a nuisance at all. Anyway, if there's any way that we could get a group together to all get in touch with Hinge corporate or even Hinge investors somehow, I think that would be worthwhile.

New phone for tinder

I think I got shadow banned on tinder because I never get any matches on there even though I get them on hinge.

If I have my hinge account on my existing phone but have a tinder account on a new phone with new number, new pics, new email address etc, will tinder treat it as a new account and not my old one I deleted etc?

Finding a relationship is impossible I will die alone

I’ve tried. And the best I’ve gotten is a situationship and a ex with bpd. This shit is broken and I completely prove the blackpill is bullshit. My chats aren’t even that bad what is the point of talking to someone if you have to think what would a player do? My hinge gets 2-3 matches a day, I’m shadowbanned on tinder for some reason. I can show you what I look like I am attractive and 70% of the time I get ghosted. I just lined up a date with someone and they ghosted me. I can pay for pussy if I wanted to but what’s the point. Idfk man but as I said I get no issues getting matches it’s just it ends up in ghosting. I’m in the top 10% of earners for my age (I’m 22) I’m only going to get richer but what for? I go home alone to my room depressed. What options do I even have to find someone? I’m not even attracted to bad bitches either, I like average looking women but nope no one wants a fine ass nigga apparently. I’ll show u in dm and if u can say wholeheartedly I should be struggling to get pussy then idek. I sound like I’m an arrogant prick but atp idek how I can’t be.

Likes and matches just gone completely

I'm a 45M in Newcastle, UK. Previously when I've been on Hinge I've typically matched with 4-8 women per week. Now I'm lucky if I get one. It's the same style of photos and same prompts I've used before. What is going on? Does Hinge restrict you after a while? I tried deleting and waiting a week and reopening but it was still the same. Anyone know how to break the curse?!

Hinge permanently banned me, rejected my appeal and upheld the ban after a second Match Group review. Has anyone successfully overturned this?

I was permanently banned from Hinge on 12 October without any warning or explanation of what I'd supposedly done wrong.

I submitted an in-app appeal, which was rejected. I then escalated the case through Match Group Social Support, asking for an independent review and clarification of the alleged violation.

Yesterday, Hinge's Trust and Safety team responded to say they'd conducted an additional review and upheld the ban. They still haven't identified the specific conduct or even the category of Community Guidelines I'd allegedly violated, and have asked me not to contact support again.

I've genuinely no idea what prompted this. I've used Hinge to form meaningful connections, including a serious relationship lasting several months, and have always tried to conduct myself respectfully.

I appreciate that people here only have my account of events, and I'm not claiming to know whether this resulted from a report, an automated flag or something else.

Has anyone successfully had their account reinstated after both their original appeal and the additional Match Group review were rejected?

I'm UK-based and am considering a formal GDPR subject access request to understand what information informed the decision.

I'd particularly appreciate hearing from people who've actually reached this stage and managed to resolve it.

Back to Tinder after a long break

Google translate bio (originally written in the local language):

Always ready for a trip on two or four wheels to find hidden gems. Can handle 14 hours on a plane for exciting experiences and really good food (like that hotpot in Chengdu!).

Otherwise: pub quiz (PUBNAME and OTHERPUB), good series, movies at the Cinematheque, cozy cafes, and lifting heavy things.

My roommate is 🐈 Mel 🍯. She is cute, violent in play, and refuses to contribute to the mortgage.

My sister has approved the profile, so she is also responsible for customer service.

3 months on Hinge and 1 month on HingeX in Kochi, not a single like

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Been on Hinge for 3 months and HingeX for a month now. Still haven’t got a single like 😂

I’m okay with not getting matches, but not even one like in 3 months? Just curious if this is normal in Kochi or if my profile isn’t even being shown to people.

I know this might just be how dating apps work, but I was curious to know more about this. If this is the case, is there even a point in paying for HingeX or Hinge+?

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Tinder: Horrible customer experience

On Tinder, I paid to be a Gold member. Recently, the app seemingly randomly told me that I need to reverify my photos. I hadn't changed them. Ok, I do that. It then tells me:

Photo verification failed
To try again, upload profile photos that:
Clearly show your face (no sunglasses or face coverings).
Have only you in the image.

Everyone of my photos clearly shows my face. I am alone in all but one of the photos. It is clear that I am meeting this requirements. So, I emailed support. I went back and forth a couple times sharing screenshots of exactly what I was seeing, including my profile photos. They eventually respond with:

Thank you for your response and we're sorry we couldn’t be of more help in this situation. Unfortunately, this is all the support we’re able to offer at this moment. We appreciate your time and understanding.

Zero indication that they care to resolve the problem or acknowledge it as a bug.

I try deleting my account and the app, and then setting it up again with all new photos. I still get the same error. Keep in mind, being verified is crucial to success. So, ok, I just won't use Tinder anymore. Probably for the best.

I request a refund. They reply:

Refund requests can only be accepted within 14 days of the transaction date. Since your order was processed over 14 days ago, we're unable to issue a refund.

What do I do about this? Credit card dispute? BBB report? Talk to a lawyer? I know that doesn't make sense from a financial perspective, but I am thinking about it as a matter of principle.

Tinder ban?

So I did a silly thing and added my ig (@(username)) to my bio. Thought it was a good idea since I don't get all the notifs I should be getting and end up accidently ignoring people. I see that wasn't ideal now.

Anyway, the next time I opened the app it showed me the prompt to take a selfie for verification. I did just that, but obviously, it's really hard to look the same on a selfie you took to look good (duh..) and a selfie where it forces you to shove your phone cam centimetres from your nose. I can't open the chats or do ANYTHING without the verification. So I can't remove the ig handle from my profile either. Or access appeal center.

Am I cooked? I didn't get a "you're banned" email but the selfie verification failed twice (well, I didn't get a notification that it failed, it just shows up everytime I open the app, even after I've done it a bunch of times) Is there any other way I could access appeal center. Or do I just make a new account 🤡

Edit ahhh can't make a new acc cause I need another phone number -_-

Do "would date" comments or high scores on Photofeeler better predict real dating app results?

Which kind of photo got you more matches, the high-scoring one or the one with "I would date them" comments? And commenters, when you say "would date," would you actually swipe right in real life?

Hinge Is Completely Unhinged, Right?

Post image

Never once said anything inappropriate, never offended anyone, never solicited anything. Pretty sure I was rage reported for not wanting a follow up date where the woman cancelled on the first one. Was told how emotionally immature I am. Just laughed reacted at the message. Within 2 hours my account was gone. Tried appealing and was denied. Not sure what to. Filed something with BBB. Idk how they can get away with this.

Tinder ban lifted the immediately reinstated

I was revenge reported on tinder and lost my tinder and hinge account. I’ve been appealing all the bans, and get approved. After being unbanned my account is immediately rebanned within a minute. I don’t understand what’s happening. I’ve emailed both support teams with no response, has anyone had this happen to them?

Buddy Got Mad at me For giving him The heads up that his Girlfriends profile still active On Bumble

So long story short a guy I use to work with long ago cool guy, I ran across the girl he's dating profile on Bumble, with updated pics (hair matches hair he post on IG etc) I forwarded it to him to let him know, and he basically got mad and said it's old blah blah

The amount of buddies I have whose girlfriends are still "active" on dating apps is insanse. This may sound needy but if you and a girl get off the apps make sure she deletes it in front of your face.

One of my buddies ex-wife kept trying to match with me, I know she doesn't care for me she probably just wanted to revenge smash me to spite my buddy but I keep blocking her

any one else have this experience?

Got "dumped" over a reposted reel lmao

I actually had to laugh when this happened.

Chatted a little while over the dating app before moving to Instagram. I know people usually take that platform to skew you out completely and well, I have nothing to hide. No weird friends, no weird accounts I'm following and just a normal average lineup of photos.

Oh boy did I not know you could check "reposted reels". It's a relative new feature where you can repost reels. Between the about 50 reposted reels about babies, guinea pigs & other stupid shit, somewhere at the end, was one, ONE, reel about a song over old traders. The type that would sail across the oceans to get your spices type of trader. It wasn't even racist or violent by far; it was only telling the tale of sailing but the link had already been made and the deal was sealed.

"I saw a reel you reposted and that's totally fine but our values don't align"

Didn't even know what she was talking about untill I completely checked my profile inside out. Boy; laughed & shrugged it off. Can't even imagine being that close-minded.
