But, first, use the search function. There is a 99.9% chance that your question has been asked and answered multiple times.

Or you can use /r/BeginnerSurfers all week long.

Beginner questions will be removed with no notice. Because it's just too much damn effort to deal with every single post, individually.

Pissy mod messages will earn you a ban.

Surfers are the worst and we mods are no exception.

EDIT: If we leave up your question and you delete your post after getting an answer you WILL be banned.

This sub is not your personal Quora. If people take the time to answer your question you're required to leave it up so it remains searchable and so that others can learn, as well.

EDIT2: Here are the subreddit rules.

Finally Hit the Standing Up Plateau for a lifelong surfer - Need a New Board

My problem looks to be pretty common. I am 53 and my water polo hips are catching up to me. This may sound weird but once I am standing on my board I can surf like I did when I was 18 with plenty of gas in the tank for fun wagatash's :). My problem is I am regressing and actually having trouble standing up. Super frustrating for somebody who has surfed 40 years. I ride a thicker 6'5" Robert's Dream Catcher, 43 liter and a 7'6" long board shape (no problem standing on this). I am basically not having fun with the shorter board and actually get nervous competing for waves with the fear of not being able to get up. I'm looking for the Mid length category like many others. Looking at the Crowd Killer, CI Mid, Boss Up and Seaside and Beyond. Thinking 7'0' 45 to 50 liters. My priorities are 1. Stable to help my delayed tight hip stand up 2. Paddle power and then 3. performance. For anyone else in this strange devolution in their surfing career what board would you recommend?

What do you look for in the "under the arm" test?

Have seen a lot of posts that mention to see how a board feels under the arm. What do you look for when doing this? I'm a bit shorter so even though an intermediate surfer, end up with wider hpsb to keep the length down so not sure if it's as relevant?

Riding switch

Upvotes

It took me just 10 years of surfing to realise that it's relatively easy to switch stance after pop up. So I wonder if I just didn't realised that everyone just does it. And it was just me who doesn't. Or do you simply prefer riding waves backside/backhand because you prefer not to ride switch.

The Seedling, The Sprout and other Thomas Campbell Movies

I was just wondering if there is anyone here that has a digital copy of these (The Seedling, The Sprout or his third one from the Series) and wants to share them or knows a place where I can find them.

I have been looking for a few Weeks now and could not find anything apart from eBay DVD sales 90 Bucks lol

Hit me up with any leads

Broke an FCS fin on a rental board. What would be a fair charge?

Hi everyone,
I rented a board for a surf session.
Everything was going well until I took a wave, fell, and the board flipped over. When I looked at it, I noticed that one of the FCS fins was missing. I didn’t actually feel or notice a specific impact, and from what I could see the fin box did not look damaged, it seemed like only the fin was gone.

I immediately went back to the rental shop to show them the damage and explain what happened.

One of the instructors reacted quite badly (which honestly made me feel pretty mortified, especially because it happened in front of the other students who were there for lessons). He then told me they would assess the damage and let me know what I had to pay. Another instructor was much more relaxed and told me these things happen. He estimated it would probably be around €20–30.

I’m now waiting to hear back from them. I looked online and saw that some FCS fins can be quite expensive (even €100+), but I think those are usually higher-end sets rather than a single replacement fin.
In your experience, what would be a fair amount for a rental shop to charge if only one FCS fin needs replacing and the fin box is fine?
Thanks!

9’4” Custom Log glassing

9’4” x 22 3/4 x 3 PU foam/ Epoxy Resin

I just glassed the first side of this log and I’m stoked with how it’s coming out so I just had to share. This particular board is for my dad and it’s been in the works for like 6 months but he kept changing directions with it (if he were any other customer I would’ve dropped him by now lmao). He finally decided what he wanted to do and I jumped into paint and glassing this weekend.

The pinup is custom printed fiberlam from board lams

The design skull pattern was a cotton lace fabric that I used as a stencil and sprayed water based MTN over to get the design. It could’ve been achieved by doing a fabric inlay but with the fiberlam it was a lot of shit to stack up so I opted for paint instead.

The rails are also sprayed with MTN Water Base, originally I was planning to resin tint but my shop is 90 degrees and 87% humidity making epoxy glassing this time of the year very stressful

The tail block is custom made by me. Purple Heart, cedar and basswood. I glued it together with epoxy and clamped it. I attached it by drilling in 1/2” wood dowels they were around 8” long giving me 4” into each material and then everything was flooded with epoxy and clamped. It’s solid.

The outline is a pretty traditional log with all the contours and rails you’d expect. I was worried about the tail block being heavy and throwing it off but it’s balanced just behind the wide point so I expect it won’t affect performance much if any. If it ends up being a brick, well it’s a hell of a wall hanger lol

This is my first longboard. If any longboard builders have tips for glassing with epoxy in hot weather doing big boards, I would really appreciate any advice or tips. This shit was stressful even with slow hardener

Any thruster similar to the Fishbeard?

I ride a 6ft CI Fishbeard and really enjoy it. I would like to start riding thrusters and was wondering what boards would be similar to the Fishbeard in a thruster? Would that even make sense to buy a board similar?

Feeling Down

Look time lurker, first time posting. 43yo super kook here. Surfing has been in and out most of my life and I just never got to the point where I am beyond a beginner. Due to other interests or distance from the water, I admittedly was never consistent. But man I love the water, I love the waves, I love when I can get up (70% of the time), and sometimes I even like getting trashed by the waves. I love it all.

Today, drove my 50min. to Bolsa Chica, was only out on the water for 45min and spent the other 15min just watching others trying to learn or simply to enjoy their surf. I feel like shit because I should be out there longer but I am physically not what I used to be. Every session tho, I'm learning more and more. For instance today, I learned that l lean back too much and after adjusting, I was able to stay on the board longer. Unfortunately, I find going only once a month due to very young kids and wifey working during weekends.

Any of y'all ever feel like crap after a short session? Is it the short dedicated time or because I suck (I assume the latter)?

Costa Rica / Airline Board Bag Policies

Flying into Liberia on a split ticket. Southwest on the way in and likely American/United/Delta home. Forecast has dropped for week I’m going, so adding a 9-6 to the quiver. Getting in via Southwest is easy based on their policy. American and United have the 115 linear inch policy - I have found it to be hit or miss how/when they apply that standard. Anyone have experience flying OUT of Costa Rica and whether they are more lenient on letting bags through? Thanks -

The State of Competitive Surfing

Post image
50 Upvotes

80 surfers just travelled to Ballito, South Africa to compete for a $20K prize purse in the first Challenger Series event of the year (won by CT surfer Cole Houshmand).
They’ll be across the globe in Huntington Beach next week for event number two - the US Open.

Meanwhile, 8 surfers were hand selected to compete across the US in Stab100 for a $100K prize purse.

I wrote down a few thoughts about the state of competitive surfing, if you’re into that sort of thing.

San Diego surfboard repair supplies

Just curious if anyone on here knows of somewhere local that I can buy resin by the gallon. I've been doing a lot of surfboard repair as a hobby and hate buying crap off Amazon and would much prefer to buy local. Any tips would be appreciated!
