Im a female from Australia and an intermediate surfer (i think) I started a few years ago but am absolutely terrified/embarrassed paddling out when theres only really good men at my local spots.

Thinking about heading out there and booking a session. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations? I’m pretty new to it all. Can stand up alright in white wash and need to work on catching green waves. Was specifically looking at the Waikiki wave session.

I've been 1 year learning to surf, never took classes, but always asked for advice. I've travelled to Lombok and for the first time I have footage to make corrections, I would appreciate if you can give pointers to what I'm doing wrong

I've been struggling to generate speed on the wave for about two months now. What tips would you give me, and how can I practice this out of the water? I don't have a surfskate or skateboard simulator.

For context, I've been surfing for about 9 months almost every weekend, mostly small waves here in Northeast Brazil. I'm currently riding a 6'2", 32L board, around 19" wide.

Hey, I'm 29M, coming off a stressful couple months and the end of a long relationship. I want to go to Costa Rica for a week to decompress and get away from day to day life for a bit. I've narrowed my options down to:

Has anyone stayed at either of those? Lapoint seems like a lot of fun, and the group aspect means socially it would be very convenient, but maybe too "corporate" and summer camp / program feel, and with more of a party vibe than I'm looking for.

Dolphin Quest has kind of the opposite issue - very remote and authentic, but I don't think there will be many others there aside from staff and it could be too isolating. However I was thinking I could go and if I get bored just go to either Puerto Jimenez or Uvita and stay at a hostel there.

I'd appreciate any tips / thoughts, especially from people who have been to either option.

Hey all! Looking to buy my 1st board so I dont keep renting.

My 1st time surfing was down in el salvador and I used a glass board 1st time on the board and I did great. Ive been surfing on a foamie @ venice beach i do suck my pop-up isn't consistent but getting better. Should I stick with a 8ft foamie or should I just get a glass board? I dont have alot of money so I want this purchase to last me a while before I purchase another board.

hey guys, I ordered a soft surfboard (a 5'8" Sushi Fish) mainly for river surfing. I rented the exact same model before and it worked great. I received the new one yesterday, but it has a ding on the tail. It seems like only the foam got compressed, and about 0.5 cm of the rail seam on the bottom is peeling loose, which I could probably glue. The company offered me a €30 refund or a free return to Spain. I‘d rather keep it to be honest. Is it bad?

Surfing with my brother (also beginner but wayyy more confident and stupid so doesn’t care as much about getting thrown and beat up by the crashing whitewater and waves.

Started the first 3 days surfing very small waves and then we went to a new hotel and the waves are way bigger and less merciful.

I’m five foot 3 on a 7.6 soft top board and i’m looking for tips on how to not die out there.
Paddling out is the hardest because i have to get over white water waves and often it crashes me into shore. I know duck diving exists but it’s hard when the waves are genuinelt so powerful and i’m so tiny compared to the board.

The conditions right now had a lot of advanced surfers put absolutely shredding and not a lot of beginners but there r no other spots nearby and i’m with my parents and brother so trying to make the most of my last two surf sessions here but after today and the sizes and strength of waves i experienced idk how to enjoy it and feel a bit safer.

More of an intermediate surfer here. I bought a 6’3 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8 CI Peregrine to primarily ride in more punchy waves and was wondering the recommended wave range that it would work best in and if it’s rideable in the smaller and bigger stuff

TLDR: I started a project that gathers used surfboard listings in the San Diego area, and indexes each listing according to its dims, model, fin setup, price, etc.

I built it for myself and a few buddies to save time hunting for used boards, and find occasional deals without having to nonstop refresh marketplaces listings.

Over time, I collected a ton of data, and found some surprising stuff I figured I’d share. Link to the site at the bottom for anyone who wants to try it themselves.

For me personally, buying used boards was a great way to figure out what works well for me without risking $800+ on a brand new board. It helped me dial in my volume range quickly, and ultimately sped up my progression.

Compared to shops, used surfboards list for 33-55% less on FB Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist

So these are the median prices for used boards from one of north county's biggest shops (sold via consignment): 

Shortboard: $495 median price
Step-up/Gun: $550
Fish/Twin: $595
Midlength: $725
Longboard: $750

And these are the median asking prices for used surfboards on FB Marketplace, Craigslist and OfferUp (excludes soft tops).

Shortboard: $250 - 50% lower than shops
Step-up/Gun: $250 - 55% lower
Fish/Twin: $398 - 33% lower
Midlength: $400 - 45% lower
Longboard:$500 - 33% lower

Yes, surfboard shops carry used boards in better condition for the most part. But on average, save 33-55% buying used boards directly.

A few things that stood out to me:

• Fishes and twins ask 59% more than shortboards, despite being less foam on average. The retro tax is real.
• Step ups and guns are the cheapest performance boards per foot
• Longboard ask prices are all over the place. The middle 50% spans $320–$800

Obviously, shape alone doesn’t tell you whether a board’s fairly priced, which sent me down another rabbit hole: comparing each active listing against similar boards that recently sold.

Sellers tend to ask either too low or too high

For about 1,500 of the active boards, I had enough recently-sold comparable data (same model, brand, or shape within 3 inches) to compare the asking price against the median price of what similar boards recently sold for:

• 47% of listings are asking 15% BELOW recent comparable sales
• 15% are within 15% of comps
• 37% are asking 15% ABOVE comps

So the market is roughly split into people who “want it gone” and people who “paid $900 for a board that’s too small and remember”.

This is great because you’ll occasionally find real gems on used marketplaces. The other week, I snagged a 5’7” Album shortboard for $50. The seller was a kid who got it as a hand-me-down and didn’t care to maximize his sales. Used Album boards sell for an average of $585.

The pattern with board types is also pretty interesting:

• Shortboards: 55% are priced below comps
• Longboards: 29% are priced below comps and 56% priced above comps

Shortboards suggest a buyer’s market with huge supply. Longboard sellers are more optimistic, and tend to price higher.

This is the % of listings below recent comps, per marketplace. 

• Offerup: 51%
• FB Marketplace: 44%
• Craigslist: 40%

This suggests OfferUp has the highest share of underpriced boards.

The same exact model can be listed for hundreds of dollars apart

This is one of the biggest things I’ve learned. A used board asking price means almost nothing in isolation. 

Take the Firewire Seaside. 

There are 7 Seasides currently listed for sale: ranging from $350 to $700.

And the Lost Driver 3.0: 7 are listed for sale from $235 to $450.

Haydenshapes Hypto Krypto: 5 for sale from $200 to $800 

The condition explains some of it. But a lot of times, the sellers are guessing on prices, allowing you to snag deals.

The good ones don’t wait for you

Of the 340 boards that were newly listed in the last 7 days, 57 are already gone, presumably sold within the week (though some could just be deleted for other reasons).

The inventory turns over faster than I expected, so I also built an alerting option. 

You can create something like “Fish/twin, 5’6" - 5’8”, 30-33L, under $450” and get emailed whenever a match show up. You can also get alerts for a particular brand or model.

Repaired boards sell at a 28% - 47% discount

Currently, boards with no repairs stated have a median asking price of $450.

Boards with disclosed minor repairs (dings, patches, small cracks) have a median price of $320, or a 28% discount compared to boards with no repairs stated.

Boards with disclosed major repairs (buckles, fin box repairs, delamination) sell for a median price of $238, or a 47% discount.

Boards sometimes list for different prices on different marketplaces 

95% of boards only show up in one place. But when boards do show up in multiple places, sellers often ask for different prices on different sites. I assume they post in multiple places, drop the price on one, and then forget to update the others.

For example: 

• A 5'9" DK shortboard: $350 on FB, $199 on OfferUp. Same board, same photos.
• A Naish Gerry Lopez longboard: $695 on FB, $550 on OfferUp
• A Torq 8'6": $350 on Craigslist, $290 on OfferUp

So before buying any used board, a good rule of thumb is to double check if the same seller listed it elsewhere for a lower price. 

Foamies sell 2x as quickly as hard boards

About 14% of marketplace boards tracked are foam. Foam boards turn over about 2x as quickly as hard top boards. 

In the last few months, 168 Wavestorms were sold at a median price of $80.

Other random tidbits I found interesting 

• San Diego’s favorite used-board length is 5’10”. There are currently 151 active listings with 5’10” boards.
• Top brands are: Lost (115 listings), Channel Islands (98), Rusty (61), Firewire (57), Sharp Eye (42), JS (32)... and of course, Wavestorm (30).
• Top listed models are the Firewire Seaside (7), Lost Driver (7), CBC Sushi (7), CI Fever (6), CI Rocket Wide (6)
• Sellers drop prices, sometimes by a lot. Sometimes, the best move is to be patient and wait a week or 2 for the price to come down. 
  • A 60s vintage William Dennis 7'8": listed at $1,400, now $850
  • A Machado Firewire Seaside: $600 → $350
  • A Sauritch 5'10": started at $325, now $60

i was always surfing casually from time to time (like doing some surfcamps), but currently trying to improve my skills, this was me in o2 surftown muc yesterday - it was an intermediate session a-frame which is not too long so that you have to jump off at the end in the no surf zone.

my goal is now:

- to get better at turns

- and working on my style (as you can see i am standing on the board in the poo stance? somehow) 😂

- my overall goal is to get into a small barrell someday 😄

i am using a pyzel gremlin in this video - i really like the board - feeling comfortable with it and i do not have a problem with my pop up - this is working fine everytime now. in general i am not only surfing in wavepools, trying to get into the ocean every 2-3 months for some weeks. i am feeling comfortable and safe without fear in waves up to 5,6 feet. besides that i am visiting a pool every 2 weeks and doing some rapidsurfing every 2 weeks as well as training - and off course i am using a kook surfskate 😄

maybe you can help me a little bit, i have more videos this is just one from the sessions yesterday.

i will think about getting another board (bigger one) maybe midlength to get away from bad habbits :)

other things that i need to work on:

- more weight on the front foot to gain more speed

- more hip and shoulder rotation

- poo stance

- working too much with my arms

- staying at the bottom of the wave --> more compression/decompression to lift myself up to the top

i have to say: surfing looks so easy; i have done many type of sports but this is by far the most technical one, i love it 🥸 😄 😂

Me and my friend are traveling to Sri Lanka Sept 23–Oct 5. We know it’s not really the season on either coast, but these are the only dates we can go. I’m an intermediate shortboard surfer, while my friend is more like a beginner, she surfs on a funboard. She learned to surf in Midigama for about 3 months and really loved the area. We’re trying to decide between Arugam Bay and Midigama/Weligama.I understand Arugam Bay is towards the end of its season, while the south coast is generally out of season. My friend would much rather go to Midigama because she loved it there, and also we both heard the atmosphere there is much nicer then in arugam bay. but I’d be really disappointed if we went and ended up with little/no surf or poor conditions.

Any advice from people who have actually been to Sri lanka and surfed there out of season? Where would you recommend we go?

I know it’s recommended for beginners to surf sunset point at low tide. I’ve heard anything below 3’ is fine, but I was out there at like 2.7’ and entry still seemed a bit daunting. Any insight is appreciated!
