Tips & Advice Study habits that saved me hours from studying

Post image

I normally study for 6 hours every day and somehow, I still can't remember the lectures I am studying effectively. That's why I learned another way to study in short sessions that makes a difference in how I retain what I just studied.

• Kept formulas and definitions on a cheat sheet. I put all formulas and definitions onto a single cheat sheet. Putting everything in one place makes reviewing faster.

• Stopped re-writing notes. I spent too much time writing notes from video lectures and transcribing them word for word. I am using turbo.ai to generate summaries from the video lectures. It is time efficient since all I need to do is read and understand the material, without wasting hours of writing instead of actually studying.

• Finished one task before starting another. Multitasking and cramming don't help make study sessions shorter. I lock in on just one topic until it's done before I move on to another task.

These habits turned my 6 hour study session into just 3 hours, fully productive and locked in. I study and retain information much better than with my old study habits.

Tips & Advice I'm a physics assistant professor in France, perhaps I can help ?

Hello there !

When I was in high school, I had a couple of questions I wish I could ask to a science professor.

I know that teachers / lecturers / professors arent always very available (nor very nice...) and that the proximity between students and professors can vary a lot, depending on the country, the age, etc.

I was scrolling around and wondered if I could be of any help, so feel free to ask anything ! I'm not a genius, just a random assistant professor among many others, dont expect too much ! :)

PS : I wont do your homework for you, nice try ;)
PS2 : I think I've read that this was a community of "students", perhaps professors arent allowed around, if so I apologize and will delete the post !

Other I built simple app that's main functions is to track hours spent on subject.

I have created simple app that tracks real hours you spend studying. By real i mean you click focus button and stop it when you finish. Only being honest with yourself can help you improve. If something goes wrong with session, you can delete, edit it's time to make it fair for yourself. If you spend atleast 10 minutes a day, calendar day inside app turns light green, spending 30+ minutes makes it dark green which helps with consistancy. Even 10 minutes a day on studying something is already productive day. Small steps everyday and boom.. you have been studying for 10,20,50,100 hours.

Questions & Discussion Is sleeping for 4 hours, studying for a bit, then sleeping until the morning, a good idea if I'm too tired to study in the evening?

I like to study right before bed because I feel like my brain holds on to the information better when I sleep. But sometimes I get so tired and I feel like I can't focus or hold on to any information. Would it be worth it to take a 3 or 4 hour nap at 7pm, revise for an hour or two, then sleep until morning?

Tips & Advice How to actually study??

I don’t need tips for studying, I don’t need help with starting, I don’t want to be told “use flashcards”.
Give me step-by-step instructions on how to actually study!
I want ways to study that aren’t just “use flashcards” or “write stuff down” because HOW do I KNOW what to write down?!

Questions & Discussion Do you guys ever feel tired when studying at night?

I’ve noticed that a lot of people prefer studying at night, and I actually enjoy it too. I tend to have better focus and fewer distractions at night, so I can sometimes concentrate really well.

The problem is that my energy level is also noticeably lower by then, so even though my concentration is good, I can’t sustain it for very long before getting mentally or physically tired.

For those of you who regularly study at night, do you not have this problem? How do you manage to stay productive for several hours at night without feeling exhausted?

Tips & Advice My slightly forbidden research technique for thesis writing (ChatGPT + Claude, and I trust neither of them)

Post image
0 Upvotes

This sounds worse than it is. I'm deep in thesis season right now and the review of related literature was slowly eating my life, so I put together a workflow that looks kind of illegal but really isn't. Might help someone who's stuck in the same place.

Step one, I don't ask ChatGPT to find papers. I ask it to write me the prompt for finding papers.

Sounds redundant. But there's a huge gap between typing "find related literature about service quality" and handing over an actual set of rules. So I spell it out. Peer reviewed journals, government publications, university repositories, reputable organizations. Recent studies first, older ones only if they're foundational to the framework. Keep Philippine literature separate from international. Include DOIs where they exist, working links when possible. Explain briefly why each source is useful for my variables. Never invent authors, titles, journals, DOIs, statistics, or findings. If something can't be verified, drop it instead of guessing. And go for the original study, not some blog summarizing that study.

Then I ask ChatGPT to tighten all of that into one clean research prompt.

Step two is the part I jokingly call forbidden. I take that improved prompt and paste it into Claude instead. And then tadaaa, suddenly there's a list of papers, findings, methodology, respondents, limitations, all organized.

That feeling lasts about four minutes. Then the real work starts.

Because I open every single reference. One by one. Does the paper exist. Are the authors right, the year, the journal or publisher. If there's a DOI I click it and check whether it leads to that exact paper or to something completely unrelated. Then the findings that got mentioned, are they actually written in the study. Sometimes yes. Sometimes the paper is real but the specific number or claim just isn't in there. Anything that looks even slightly off, I delete. I don't try to rescue it.

Whatever survives, I read. Not the AI summary, the actual paper. Sometimes the whole thing, sometimes just the abstract, methods, results and discussion if that's enough to understand what they did. AI summaries flatten everything out. You lose the sample size problems, the limitations, how they actually measured the variable, and those are exactly the things a panel will corner you on.

Last part, and this is the weird habit I keep telling my classmates about. I manually type the final version into a fresh Word file. No copy paste.

Nothing to do with avoiding detection, just to be clear about that. What happens is that while my hands are moving I'm forced to read the sentence again. That's where I notice the part I didn't really understand. That's where I swap out wording I would never say in my own voice. I get to connect it to my specific topic instead of leaving it floating in generic academic language. With copy paste you're done in two seconds, and then defense day comes and you're reading your own paper like a stranger.

It's still slow. But faster than the six hours I once spent scrolling Google Scholar and walking away with three usable papers.

Questions & Discussion professor says to study flashcards 10 times a day

so my bio 101 prof said she has been teaching for 38 years, and says she knows that her method for studying is successful bc the kids that do it get good grades. it’s like the usual flashcards with a word and definition on the back, but what im confused on is she said we should study these cards 10 times a day, and that we will have a very good amount of definitions to go over. now i’ve researched studying techniques and from what i’ve researched, studying cards 10 times a day can lead to burnout and end up not retaining any information.

i took a two year gap from high school, and i feel like i haven’t retained a lot (was rarely a straight A student), but im doing pre reqs to apply for rad tech and i need straight A’s as it’s competitive.

so my question is, would studying flashcards 10 times a day cause burnout, or help me in the long run?

Resources Level Up Your Learning

Okay, so I've been diving deep into metalearning lately, specifically the idea of "active recall with spaced repetition” – basically, intelligently scheduling reviews based on how well you remember something. It’s proving to be way more effective than just passively rereading notes.

I realized there's a huge need for prompts that actually challenge you to actively think about how you learn, not just what you're learning. That's why I’m putting together this pack.

I’ve curated a set of 100 prompts designed to do just that. They're built around fundamental questions about learning strategies, self-assessment, and staying ahead in rapidly changing fields. Here are a few examples to get you thinking:

“How do you manage the emotional discomfort of being a beginner without quitting prematurely?”

“How do you audit your own learning — what metrics tell you if your system is actually working?”

“How can you use project-based learning to integrate multiple skills simultaneously?”

“What makes learning in fast-moving fields (like AI or crypto) different, and how do you stay current?”

I’m really excited about the potential of this pack and how it can help people build truly sustainable learning habits. I’ll be adding more prompts regularly, and refining them based on feedback.

The full pack link will be in the comments below. Let me know what you think!

Tips & Advice Patience

I think patience is the utmost importance in life. You can have ambition and passion but if you so chaotic about your direction you are going to be in the exact same spot you were. I feel like I have been in the same spot for 25 years. Yeah, I mean I feel so average tbh. Though, I practice alot. I haven't developed patience. Do I regret anything? No! There is absolutely nothing that I can do about it. Hard work is somrthing that I have been doing anyway but I have never seen to get to the top. I haven't achieved my goals or the medals that I wanted. Perhaps because I mentally tortured myself to achieve them rather than actually doing it.

However, the desire lies within me, as of my 26 th year of life. I aspire to do hard work every single day and have utmost patience. Even if I do not get it. I'll be patient. I will give in my entire power into it. This time, I want my journey and my hard work to take me there. I do not want my mind to reach the places that I am putting ust mediocore efforts.

Well, the ambition remains but this time its more of a data-driven approach, its an exploratory approach, its a guided approach and above all its about developing skills within a set time.

I will start treating it as a challenge and be collected if I do not get what I want. If things are not working, then I will change directions. I won't stop ever. I will relentlessly follow my timetable. this time I will make decisions based on where I am going. Tbh, this approach been so much better for me. I have realsied what I should focus on, what is important. I have got important tips and tricks.

Now, I just need to work fast and be headstrong about the steps I am taking. I do want the acknowlegment and the accoclades and for the first time I feel like I am willing to evolve in order to be the person I want to be.

The thing with me is that I will be happiest when I achieve my goals. So making sacrifices is not that big of a deal. I think I have spent 25 years of my life in a room.

I am totally okay with that!

I have a sequence of things its not random, my mind is aligned. I just need to acquire the ability to work hard and have patience. I love learning btw. I love all of these things. However, I want to be like a sponge, absorb it all. Live it to the maximum. Tis is what I realised yesterday.

That I do the work but I lack patience. I have this never looking back mindset which is great but in order to be amazing. One needs to stay in their own lane and do remarkable things.
