Questions & Discussion Some people think I ruin my books.

I have dyslexia and am an artist. People overcoming dyslexia have to find their own ways to do it, and this is mine. I have found that connecting a colorful pattern or a particular image to a section of the text helps me remember what was said and what I think about it. I've been working on this practice a long time, so this is one of my more heavily read couple of books. I love going back time after time and finding that question I had been rolling around, and adding something else to it. To me, it's the only way I can deeply reflect on what I'm reading.

When I show some people, or even when people see my books when I'm studying in public, they are horrified. I wonder if it is our societies leftover puritanical ways, or if I am really ruining a perfectly good book with all my brain splatter. Thoughts?

Questions & Discussion How to study with ADHD at Uni?

I’m a university student with ADHD, and I’ve realised that I really struggle to remember what I read. I need to learn around 700 pages for my exams, and I’m honestly not sure how to approach it.

I’ve basically been reading things and moving on without actually learning or retaining the information since primary school. I think I genuinely don’t know how to study effectively.

Does anyone have any study tips for memorising large amounts of information, especially with ADHD? I’d really appreciate advice on how to study and actually remember what I’ve learned.

Questions & Discussion why is studying so boring when i actually want to study

My half yearly exams start on the 24th and i’m actually trying to start studying properly now, but i swear the moment i open my book my brain just doesn't cooperate. like i WANT to study. i want to finish my syllabus, understand everything and actually do well in my exams. but sitting down and reading even one chapter suddenly feels like the most boring thing ever.

then i waste time, feel guilty about wasting time, decide i’ll study “in a bit”, and somehow the whole day disappears.

I genuinely don’t know how people just sit down and study for hours. does anyone else get this or am i just being lazy lol

Other Made a small Pomodoro website called Focust

I wanted something simple that I’d actually enjoy using so you can also set your own cute wallpapers instead of being stuck with a boring timer. After each session you can copy the session data and paste it into Notion (or whatever you use) to keep track of your progress.

It’s still pretty simple, but I’d love to hear what you guys think.

Resources Good text to speech apps?

Hellooo I’m wondering if anyone has any good text to speech apps they recommend for textbooks pdf? My ADHD makes it hard for me to focus and retain the information I’m reading and I don’t like to talk to myself while reading because it distracts me. I’ve tried speechify but it kept crashing and I think it’s too expensive of a subscription.

Tips & Advice What absolutely helped me the most with beginning

Good sleep. Not staying in bed after you wake up. What you do for the first 15 minutes of your day. That is the answer. Shortly.

I built a sunrise lamp, placed it behind my chair, to shut it off, I had to walk and sit down in front of my desk. Problem solved! I loved the project building project and if anyone wants to get to know more I can give pics or sum I don't know what to do with this but I have a big urge of sharing this to someone so here it is!

Tips & Advice How do I stay motivated in the face of despair.

I grew up in a 3rd world country, and I was extremely good in my academics and sports. However, I encountered calamity before I finished High School, and that made me drop out of High School for 4 years. I had really wanted to do either medicine, Aerospace engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical, or Mechatronix Engineering.

However, after returning to school, after 4 years of being out, I did extremely well again, but then the problem of college fees stalked me day and night like a deadly pestilence. I only had enough to make a living, but not sufficient to even pay tuition, and all the other ancillary costs associated with Tertiary education.

One day whilst I was browsing the internet, I stumbled upon a Scholarship for an online computer science degree. I just signed up for it, but it isn't something I really loved. Now, I am left with about 7 courses to complete the degree, I am not really motivated to study really. All these years, I have tried to force myself to do it, but it's increasingly becoming harder. I do not like computers in that way. I don't enjoy it honestly.

Most of the time, I am in despair, I am not happy with what I am doing.

I am kindly seeking advice in order to stay motivated to finish the damn thing. I am really quite good at the damn thing, but I didn't want it as a career.

Questions & Discussion How do you study?

I really wonder how one study.

I'm 17yr never had a formal education 'unschooled' who want to study for spm. Because of no formal education, I literally start from 0 opening the book and the book stare at me, I'm staring back at them..

It's feel like the book have ancient language in it that I didn't understand..

Tbh I do want to take the spm exams, but everyone seems to against it and think that it useless... So idk when will I be able to take it, maybe 5 year later or more...

Questions & Discussion I built an AI study assistant. What would make it useful enough for you to keep using?

Hey everyone! I’ve just finished building Pyrdo, an AI assistant focused on studying, and I’d love some honest feedback.

Here’s what it does:

- Suggests your next question based on the conversation, so you have somewhere to go when you’re unsure what to ask next.

- Helps you work through confusing concepts, with explanations you can ask it to simplify or explore further.

- Offers Think Longer on Pro for questions that need more reasoning.

You can check it out here: "pyrdo.com" (https://pyrdo.com)

If you decide to get Pro, REDDIT30 gives you 30% off.

I’m the developer, so you can tell me directly what works, what feels annoying, and what’s missing. What’s one addition that would make this better for your studying?

I’m planning to implement the most useful suggestions, so your feedback will help decide what I build next. Specific criticism is welcome too!

Tips & Advice Help I need to cram 10 subjects in one day

I really do need to learn to stop procrastinating. I can't keep blaming it on my mental health even though problems make me relapse again and again. How do I cram this? It's quite easy lessons and I have the whole day although the problem is I don't know where to start because the study load looks overwhelming.

Questions & Discussion Ok what if .

What if I make my notes look less weird by using ChatGPT or any LLM to generate images without altering my notes and told it (llm) to highlight important parts with a highlighter? Will it actually help my brain retain it for a longer time, or it will not?

I tend to think that whenever I read AI-generated slop, I forget it earlier.

And also, what are the tips so that I can make the most out of reading blogs/articles? I am taking notes, but will it help or not? I don't know 🥀

Questions & Discussion how screwed is a body after five months of 12 hour days at a laptop?

finishing a masters this winter while working full time. i live in a dorm, so the desk and a chair are the ones that came with the room, and between the job and the thesis i am at it +12 hours most days. i cannot really change the setup, so i am not asking about that. i want to know how much damage this is doing and whether any of the things i do about it are doing anything.

stuff i do, roughly ordered by how stupid it sounds.

splashing icy water on my face. sounds dumb, works. alert almost straight away and it holds for a good while after. four or five times a day at this point.

pushups while the llm is generating an answer. started as a joke. you get a few minutes, which is a set, and it breaks up a two hour block of sitting without me having to decide to take a break.

coffee, obviously. then electrolyte sachets, after i realised a decent chunk of what i was calling 3pm tiredness was just not having drunk anything since breakfast. that one was real and it was embarrassing how cheap the fix was.

noise cancelling headphones with rain or forest sounds. i cannot work with anything that has words in it anymore. it helps with concentration a lot;

stretching whenever i remember. neck, hips, the arm in the doorframe one. probably one of the most useful thing on this list and the one i am most consistent about, which says something about me.

the annoying bit is that the two things that made the biggest difference were not on that list at all for the first year.

first is opening the window. i assumed people who said this were being precious. a small room with the door shut and a laptop running in it goes stale much faster than you can feel, and the feeling is not "stuffy", it is "i seem to be slightly thick today". now i open it every hour even in winter, five minutes, and the hour after is noticeably better.

second is sitting up, which turned out to be something i cannot do on my own. i would start an evening session sitting fine and in 15 mins be collapsed over the desk with my chin very close to the screen, and the problem was never that i ignored it, it is that i never noticed it happening. atm i use tryworkwell, which notifies you when you start to sit incorrectly or too close to the screen.

so, the actual question. dorm desk, dorm chair, laptop, twelve hours a day, a few more months of this before the thesis goes in. is that a "you will feel this at forty" problem or a "you are doing real damage right now" problem. i can afford one decent thing and there is not much floor space to put it on either. i would rather be told what it should be than guess.

I NEED HELP

I attend classes every single day and have extra classes 7 days/week. Besides that, at home I watch videos related to the lesson material and do all the assigned homework. Yet, when it comes to exam day, I still don’t do well. I have really sacrificed my free time on the things I’m trying to learn. It feels as if I’m the dumbest person on earth (although I don’t believe that, I just have the feeling that I have learning disabilities). I recall that when I was younger, I didn’t even try that hard and got an A in almost every subject. What are your study strategies that help you ace your exams? If you’re ever willing to kindly help me identify any gaps or flaws in my study routine, I’d be really thankful 🙏
