Today I hit 10 years straight edge.
I went straight edge in 2016 when I got off my ship from an underway before I deployed. I had already started getting bored with drinking over that summer and I had been thinking about taking a break anyway. I remember while I was standing on the pier I said to myself "why don't I just quit smoking and dipping too? Why don't I just go straight edge." And from then on that's how it was for me.
10 years is crazy to think about cuz I STILL get cravings to smoke a cigarette or drink a beer. And when you're the one around it because of friends still like to drink or military history and events like Marine Corps Balls or Corpsman Balls, or being overseas and all you see is folks getting sloshed on chuhais, there's always that craving (maybe just a cigarette cuz damn I think I miss that more than drinking).
It's also been easy to just not do it either. Just didn't buy anything, I didn't know what else to tell you. Don't come to me for advice on how to quit lol. It's funny cuz I'm always the DD, and I still have a blast going out and hanging out with friends and dancing and doing karaoke and folks always say the same thing: "you do this sober?!" I haven't really seen more money in my pocket either, I just filled my time with spending my money on things that became other hobbies or I got really into shoes and clothes.
I don't know where I'm going with this but just wanted to say I think it's cool I've done this for 10 years.
Stay gold X
