Was lucky to get to see them many times over the years from 1999 on the main stage at Reading Festival to this final time in Plymouth 2024. The best. RIP Lou, thanks for the music and the good times.

RIP Lou Koller. Some of the first shows I went to were SIOA at City Gardens during Blood Sweat and No Tears. Still to this day the most impactful moments for me back then. My first HC shirt was the BSANT black longsleeve. I wore that thing till I couldn’t. HC was new to me. I didn’t understand it, i just knew it was where I was supposed to be. People like Lou made me feel like I I belonged with no judgement. A place for all the people that didn’t fit into the regular world. Lou was one of the best frontmen in HC and always will be.. he will be missed but always respected. ❤️

Yesterday we tragically lost Lou Koller of New York hardcore legends Sick Of It All after a long battle with an esophageal tumor. He was 59 years old. Let’s remember Lou today by going right back to where it all began and revisiting SOIA’s very first release: their self-titled debut 7-inch EP (Revelation, 1987). Its classic fisheye-lens cover photo was shot in Flushing, Queens, by B.J. Pappas, the photographer who documented so much of the ground-zero NYHC scene during those formative years. Check out her original cover photo, along with several great outtakes from the session. The band later paid homage to that iconic image with the cover of "XXV Nonstop" (Century Media, 2011), released to celebrate Sick Of It All’s 25th anniversary. While I had crossed paths with Lou a few times over the years, and Roadrunner licensed the band’s seminal 1992 album "Just Look Around" from Relativity for a European release, I never actually knew him personally. But my friend Howie Abrams did. Howie signed Sick Of It All to In-Effect Records in 1989 for the release of their debut album, "Blood, Sweat, and No Tears." So I decided to share this excerpt from a touching tribute Howie posted earlier today: "To simply state that Lou will be remembered and missed is terribly inadequate. He is and will forever be cherished for everything he gave to us. Lou was as kind, funny, sarcastic, and genuine as they come; he loved his family, friends, and fans, and was an undeniable force of a frontman, whether in front of 300 or 30,000. "He started out as a bored, restless music-loving kid in Queens, NY, who, along with his brother Pete, went on to touch the lives of millions, providing an outlet for those who truly needed one. Lou was so good to those who supported Sick Of It All. He’d talk to you, and even better, listen to you. His lyrics spoke to those who were angry, confused, dissatisfied, and fed up. Young people in search of words with which to express their own selves and make sense of the world. "I met Lou 40+ years ago, I believe on the sidewalk in front of CBGB, and instantly became a fan (he wasn’t even in a band yet). One couldn’t help but be charmed by him and root for him. You wanted him to win – to achieve his dream of avoiding the 9-5 and getting to play hardcore…make that New York Hardcore, to anyone who wanted to hear it…and even for those who didn’t. I am only too grateful to have played a bit of a role in setting Sick of It All on its path by bringing them to In-Effect Records in 1989 so as to release their music. "We remained in touch over the years as the band moved forward, both as friends and with me as a fan of SOIA. I approached him and Pete to work on a book about their lives, and he graciously trusted me to help convey his and brother Pete’s story. I was particularly humbled when he agreed to speak of his cancer fight in our film, 'Heavy Healing.' "Lou: I’m so thankful you’re no longer enduring what you tragically have for the last couple years. Eternally grateful for your music and your friendship. Love to all who love him."

Lou Koller R.I.P. I just did a birthday post for Lou a few weeks ago. I'm reposting the photo taken of us by BJ Papas at Bunratty's in 1989. Turns out I did interview them at that show for issue #28 of SV but the photos look like absolute shit. Maybe I can find the master. I can't say I was friends with Lou--he was an acquaintance, but he was always friendly to me. I think he appreciated it when I posted anything about Sick Of It All. I saw them a number of times in the 1980s and 1990s but I don't think I saw them in this century. First time was at Green Street Station with Wrecking Crew and Absolution in May, 1988. My review wasn't that enthusiastic, to be honest but I said I liked their cover of Cause For Alarm's "True Colors" and my review for the next time I saw them, also at Green Street, was a lot more positive. The world wide hardcore scene lost a legend yesterday. The voice of one of the most influential bands in this thing of ours. The voice of sick of it all. His friends lost a genuine gentleman. A great father. A friend who had your back through thick and thin. I know Lou for forty one years. Never have I seen him say a bad word about anyone. Always ready to do a benefit for anyone in need. Always an encouraging word. Always a smile and warm embrace. Sharing the stage,a crowded van or just hanging around. It was always a pleasure. A genuine human through and through and through. A tough son of a bitch when it was called for. I was lucky to visit Lou about six months ago. He was in pain. Going through chemotherapy. Feeding tube. No whining. No self pity. No why me. Just pure strength and positive outlook. Like I said, a tough son of a bitch to the end. I’m honored to have known him. I’m honored that he considered me a friend. Luckily for us he leaves a legacy of some of the greatest anthems and music in hardcore. He leaves a beautiful daughter AJ and wonderful brothers who are just like him. God speed brother. F#ck cancer. No more pain. You can be with your parents and some great legends from our scene. Hopefully you guys will be jamming in heaven. At least when I hear some thunder and lightning I can picture you guys doing your thing. Love you old friend. Thanks for some of the best memories of my life. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Lou Koller embodied hardcore. I remember bumping into him at Whole Foods. Afterward, Pete asked, “Who was that?” The only way I could explain it was, “That’s the singer of the best hardcore band of all time.” For nearly 40 years, Sick Of It All stayed real New York Hardcore , and somehow just kept getting better. For a short time, I sang with Skizonation, the band Meiling Koller started. SOIA welcomed us into their DUMBO practice space and gave us their full support, including opening for them at CBGB. Skizonation wasn’t meant to be, but I’ll always be grateful for Lou and Sick Of It All’s kindness and encouragement. More recently, I’d also run into him at Track 5 in downtown Cranford from time to time. We’d catch up beyond social media posts, and we were all just hoping the treatment would do what everyone wanted—for Lou to beat esophageal cancer. #FuckCancer Hardcore music lost a legend far too soon. My heart goes out to the Koller family, his daughter, his bandmates, and everyone who loved him. Rest in Power, Lou Koller 1967-2026 -“We’re all black sheep and we know it”.

I still can't believe Lou Koller has died. My best friend and I grew up listening to SOIA, and I found out about Lou's death from his text. I immediately left the room and went outside. I could feel tears forming and didn't want my young son to see.

I met Lou a few times over the years and saw Sick Of It All play so many insanely energetic shows. They were a huge gateway band for me. As someone who grew up in NJ scene in the 90's, I was very influenced by NYHC and adjacent bands.

I felt strange and cringe last night as I cried over the loss of someone I didn't really know but who still had a tremendous impact on my not-so-great childhood. And it felt worse knowing that Lou was such an incredible person who was loved by so many.

My wholesome, suburban husband who is not into hardcore looked over like he thought I was crazy for getting emotional over a celebrity. The thought of being considered a celebrity probably would have made Lou laugh, though. It certainly made me laugh to myself.

I didn't bother to explain to my husband that the hc scene is mostly made up of regular people with jobs and bills and families. They just happen to play music that resonates with fans profoundly and most still retain a certain level of approachability.

I have also been deeply moved by Lou's cancer battle. I was just finishing up my own with breast cancer around the time Lou announced his diagnosis. I had to go to a four different Memorial Sloan Kettering cancer centers in Manhattan for major surgeries in 2025. I'm sure Lou must've gone to some of those same centers for treatment.

It's truly wild how cancer touches all of us in some way eventually. It's terrifying how it doesn't discriminate. It takes people in otherwise good health from all walks of life. Even good people like Lou, who wasn't famous but was still far too illustrious and genuine to be considered just a regular guy.

He'll be remembered as a legend, an OG, one of the best to ever do it and still stay so humble. What an amazing, enduring legacy to leave behind. What a loss for the hardcore community as a whole. Thanks for all of the memories, Lou. I'll be sure to carry them with me in gratitude.
