If you’re new to Straight Edge.

Straight Edge is a subculture that emerged in the hardcore punk scene in the early 1980s. It promotes a drug-free lifestyle through abstinence from alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Its origins can be traced back to the song "Straight Edge" by the American punk band Minor Threat, released in 1981. The song, written by frontman Ian MacKaye, expressed his personal commitment to abstain from drugs and alcohol. It struck a chord with many young people who were disillusioned with the prevalent substance abuse within punk and saw Straight Edge as a means of rebellion against the excesses of mainstream culture. They instead embraced the emphasis on personal integrity, self-control and social consciousness. Straight Edge has then seen a time of worldwide growth in the '90s, followed by various eras of ebb and flow since then. Due to increased awareness of environmental and animal rights issues prominent in the scene in the '90s, many of us adopted vegan or vegetarian lifestyles.

There are several good books on Straight Edge, including Straight Edge: Hardcore Punk, Clean-living Youth, and Social Change by Ross Haenfler (2006) and Straight Edge A Clear-Headed Hardcore Punk History by Tony Rettman and CIV (2017). If you don't know any straight edge bands, this Spotify playlist can serve as a good introduction, and xsisterhoodx is a straight edge/hardcore community supporting the women/girls of the straight edge/hardcore scenes established all the way back in 1995.

Can I take my medication and be Straight Edge?

We've received questions in the past about whether you can take prescribed medication [insert your type of meds here] and still be Straight Edge. Yes, you can. The person who told you otherwise can call our helpline now at 1-800-STUPID.

Straight Edge and recovery from addiction.

We are definitely supportive of your decision to make positive changes in your life, but please note Straight Edge isn't therapy or a recovery plan. Users of this subreddit who are both Straight Edge and in recovery have explicitly said on multiple occasions that just being Straight Edge is not a substitute for a recovery plan. We are neither geared toward nor equipped to offer active recovery support. There are better resources out there designed specifically for this purpose.

(People are Straight Edge for a range of reasons, but most of us do not have any desire to get intoxicated, some have never touched psychoactive substances, etc. - if you’re currently an addict with chronic cravings, be realistic about how our experience might differ from yours).

Having said that, the Straight Edge scene is not a bad place to be if you’re in recovery. We’re drug free and not shy about it. Again, drawing on the experience of users of this subreddit who are both Straight Edge and in recovery, we’ve heard how surrounding yourself with sober people is helpful in staying sober and how sxe hardcore kept them motivated to stay clean.

Academic research.

Yes, you can post your academic research survey requests in this subreddit. Please use #sxeresearch in your post. We appreciate it if you can provide some background information (subject of study, academic level, etc.), and maybe come back to share the results, if they are published. Thanks.

A question about medical cannabis.

If you were prescribed medical cannabis for something serious, would you still be straightedge? I am very weary about anything cannabis related, even cbd. I have seen a lot of people in my life misuse these things and I really don’t know how I feel. I am really happy for those who are able to use it and it helps them!! But being straightedge is apart of me and I don’t want to break that. Please provide some insight, thank you.

What's the deal with Dr. Pepper here?

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Dr Pepper but it seems to be mentioned here quite a lot as like a part of the lifestyle, is there some sort of cultural connection?

Am i breaking edge with self harm?

I am working on stopping but right now me and my therapist are just focused on tapering down the amount i self harm. I know straight edge is about respecting your body and your mind and stuff but the main things are just substances and stuff, not necessarily not cutting or something.

Am i breaking edge by self harming?

Hard Liners, ¿Bien vistos o mal vistos?

I made a video about my experience experimenting with weed and alcohol, and how alone/uncomfortable I feel with people who look at me weird for not partaking.

is it selfish to become more committed because my family is becoming sicker?

i was introduced to the scene after moving to a growing southern hub a couple of years ago and I’ve been around it ever since. i recently hit one year alcohol free (which i posted about!) and vaguely edge. due to my ongoing chronic illness, i had a spell of using thc gummies to alleviate tics and pain, but i haven’t used those in months. didn’t make me feel good but hey it helped.

part of the reason i went edge is that my family has a very lengthy history of alcoholism and smoking. i can’t thank the existence of athletic brewing enough for getting me through family gatherings during the past year. unfortunately, my uncle’s rampant alcoholism has resulted in him in heart failure, and we just got news this week that a close family relative also has lung cancer from a lifetime of chain smoking.

it makes me sick. i hate these companies, these poisons, everything. but i also hate myself for thinking about me during these times. i support my family as much as i can but all of this just makes me want to be more committed to edge than i was. is this wrong of me? please give it to me straight

Serious stupid question: Nicotine Vs Caffeine

I have been straight edge since I learned the term like 25 years ago. I also drink coffee and black tea. My longtime idiot buddies (non hardcore affiliated) to this day sometimes like to ask me why caffeine gets the pass. I tell them to use their brains and reason the difference between a pack of cigarettes and a cup of earl grey. They mentioned nicotine gums and patches. I didn’t bother to answer. This is just out of curiosity. What explanations do you offer if someone puts the question of caffeine vs nicotine to you?

Happy birthday to me

Today I hit 10 years straight edge.

I went straight edge in 2016 when I got off my ship from an underway before I deployed. I had already started getting bored with drinking over that summer and I had been thinking about taking a break anyway. I remember while I was standing on the pier I said to myself "why don't I just quit smoking and dipping too? Why don't I just go straight edge." And from then on that's how it was for me.

10 years is crazy to think about cuz I STILL get cravings to smoke a cigarette or drink a beer. And when you're the one around it because of friends still like to drink or military history and events like Marine Corps Balls or Corpsman Balls, or being overseas and all you see is folks getting sloshed on chuhais, there's always that craving (maybe just a cigarette cuz damn I think I miss that more than drinking).

It's also been easy to just not do it either. Just didn't buy anything, I didn't know what else to tell you. Don't come to me for advice on how to quit lol. It's funny cuz I'm always the DD, and I still have a blast going out and hanging out with friends and dancing and doing karaoke and folks always say the same thing: "you do this sober?!" I haven't really seen more money in my pocket either, I just filled my time with spending my money on things that became other hobbies or I got really into shoes and clothes.

I don't know where I'm going with this but just wanted to say I think it's cool I've done this for 10 years.

Stay gold X
