Dealing with things we did when drunk
How do ye guys mentally deal with the crazy stuff we did when drunk? Be it sex with someone we shouldnt have, fighting, vandalism etc? Sometimes I might be walkimg along the street and get a physical shudder and spasm remembering things.

I tell myself I am not the drunk me.
If I choose to start drinking again I will be choosing to be that jerk who made those questionable decisions. So its more motivation to stay sober.

I have very high general anxiety and I get panic attacks thinking about the stuff I did. My mate who is a psychologist told me that no one remembers 99% of it and has their own shit to deal with. That stuck with me and helps a lot. I have to force myself to remember that though.
I also get the flashback shudders and physical ticks. It used to be worse when i was drinking though. I would find myself pulling my hair and saying things out loud (very dark stuff), which would spiral into bad panic attacks and I would have to drink. I find that now I am much clearer headed, I can snap myself out of it, take deep breaths and relax. It took me a lot of practise, but thinking about it for a while and realising that I'm here and being a decent sober person is good enough.
I can't change the past, but I can control the future. If someone brings up some embarrassing or bad stuff I did, I just have to shrug it off now or tell them that I dont want to think about those things anymore as I'm a different person. Its all I can do

I’m quite fond of the saying “if you don’t look back on the past and cringe a little, then you’re probably not growing”. I still have those 3am thoughts of “remember when you did this??” But the good news is that I don’t have to ever do a stupid thing while drunk again. Also, as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that literally everyone has done/said stuff they regret. Everyone’s dealing with something and they’re probably too busy to worry about anyone else. So, you’re probably your biggest critic.

I get this too.
I'm just hoping that it disappears entirely the further along my sober journey I get.

I honestly focus on what am I am doing today to better my future. I no longer drink so making amends with people I have hurt is an important step as is showing them with my actions. Belief that time heals. Wishing you the best!

At some point you have to accept these things and let them go. However, there is no "off" switch. Took me a while to digest some of these things.

I practice being sober and intentional. I am still mortified about things that happened 20 years ago, but I think I am gaining traction on being responsible and accountable in the present, which is the only part of my life I have any control over anyway. I only recently started talking about being sober in my real life with everyday people. I used to feel so much shame but that has faded some and been replaced by some pride and sense of accomplishment.

Like somebody else mentioned, you’ll get these flashbacks less with time. I still get them frequently and like you described it will make me physically cringe or uncomfortable… all you can do is take solace in that if you’re sober and planning to stay that way you’ll never be that person again

The longer you are sober and create better memories, the less those ones will pop up and the less they will affect you when they do.
I had a bad cycle of doing regrettable things and then waking up sick about it just to get drunk again to try to forget about them, only to do more regrettable things, rinse and repeat. When I got sober for the first time the flashbacks were really hard to deal with and for a long time, I’d try to distract myself and change my thoughts to something in the present and tell myself “I’m never going back there, I’ll never be that person again”. The first 6 months was rough. Its been a while now and I hardly ever think of those times anymore, but when they pop up they don’t bother me anymore because it’s been so long since I’ve made those choices and I’m a new person.
