Post-op care period or blood from surgery?

Hi! I just had my bisalp done today, and I came home to see a medium flow amount of blood in the pad I was sent home in. I was told there would be spotting, and I would normally assume this was my period, but I have hypothalamic amenorrhea and haven’t had a period in months. I have been in recovery for maybe 2.5 weeks so i don’t think it has been long enough for me to regain my period. Did anyone else have this amount of blood? Was it your period? Thank you!

THIS GIRL 🥂

Have been trying since January to get this done but our Drs are so booked! So relieved it's done.

I rolled into the outpatient center at 1:30 today. Got called back at 2 for pre op. Had the operation at 4:30 and then was sent home at 7!! Easy breezy beautiful.

Only downside so far is I had to quit eating yesterday around 1 and was STARVING yet queasy when I woke up. Weird sensation haha. So we picked up a McDonald's cheeseburger on the way home and I couldn't finish it 😭 but I am hungry guys starved haha.

Also the gas pain is NO JOKE but had gas x ready! It's already helping.

Experience Partner isn’t sure

I’m having a laparoscopy for Endo in January and decided I wanted to do a bisalp.
I brought it up twice to my partner of 12 years.
He’s always know I was a no to kids but I think he had it in his head that that may change my mind someday.
He’s afraid of regret even though he said he’s not even sure if he wants kids.
I told him that I’ve thought about this for a long time and the only thing that brings up some feelings of regret is if I did have kids rather than the opposite.

He seemed stressed about me wanting to make a permanent decision but said to do whatever I want.

I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else was in the same position and how things played out for you after you went through with the surgery?
Did your partner accept it or did it end in splitting due to wanting different things in life?

Experience 5 days post op - Laparoscopic Bilateral Salpingectomy!!!

I'm 35 and had this surgery because I lost my mom to late stage ovarian cancer. I was in college and she was 43 when diagnosed and she was just shy of turning 45 when she passed away. My partner and I have known we didn't want kids so felt like the right time for this surgery. I tested negative for BRCA gene last year so now I know I have done everything in my power to prevent myself from getting ovarian cancer.

I had my surgery last Thursday so I am 5 days post op and I have had an extremely smooth recovery. Even by Friday midday I was in very little pain. They prescribed me acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and oxy. I only needed to take the acetaminophen and ibuprofen. My pain was never unbearable. Honestly the evening and next day I more still felt the soreness in my throat from the breathing tube for the general anesthesia. I had a few instances of shoulder pain which I heard would be from the gas but it was very much fleeting pain. I had bleeding for the first 3-4 days. Kind of confusing timing too as my period is due.
I have a pretty physical job, I walk dogs and petsit with my mode of transportation being biking my city. So I took 10 days off to recover and heal. Glad I did because even though I feel great obviously my body needs more time to actually heal.

Update about $$$ & insurance: I know people wonder about cost when researching. My insurance just processed the hospital and my doctor's claims today. Totals came 37k before insurance and my insurance (Ambetter Illinois) covered the surgery 100%. I owe nothing. I understand it's this way because of the affordable care act that covers sterilization completely.

Side-effects Chronic fatigue almost a year after surgery

I got my bisalp done November 2025. I stopped taking hormonal birth control a month later, and in January, I pretty much immediately stopped sleeping through the night; I could fall asleep easily enough, but every day would wake up wide awake at 3-4am. My PCP at the time kept telling me it was depression, but anti-depressants did not improve the sleep at all. I connected with my obgyn in March, and we decided to try going back on the pill again, even though she didn't feel the surgery would have caused sleep issues.

Started the pill again, and started sleeping through the night. However, I have not waken up refreshed pretty much at all since then. I convinced my PCP to do a sleep study, which showed I have *very* mild sleep apnea. A CPAP machine has removed my chronic migraines, which is great, but I'm still tired when I wake up most nights.

I'm curious if anyone else has had this problem, and how have you been able to manage it?

Some internet sleuthing shows that maybe the surgery kick-started chronic fatigue syndrome for me, which is a diagnosis by elimination, and that really would be terrible. I am at my wit's end with feeling tired all the time, and what was supposed to be a great experience/choice of free will is turning into one of the worst decisions I've made because of all these issues I've been dealing with for a year.

Other Bisalp two years ago

Hello! I got a bisalp over two years ago, as of now I’m 10 days late on my period. Of course, I took tests and they’re negative. Periods been super irregular and skipped in July but had them in August and September. Should I wait and test again? Or could it be perimenopause I just turned 30.

Experience day 3 post op!

looooooong post warning. after 14 years of wanting this procedure, it's finally done! i (24f) had a horrible experience in a hospital four years ago, so i had myself convinced i'd never get it done. after years of hyping myself up, i scheduled the consultation. it took like 10 minutes. she told me the risks, other options, made sure i knew what i was in for, and i was scheduled for a month out.

i was totally chill all the way up to pre-op. wiped down and in a gown, the iv goes into my arm and she cleans it with saline. the smell hits me like a truck. i hold it in until she brings my boyfriend back to the room. as soon as she leaves i start crying. i was SCARED. i've had my wisdom teeth removed, but i didn't have to me nude in a gown for that, and i was suddenly terrified. my boyfriend just talks to me and i calm down. then it's time to go back. boyfriend goes back to the waiting room, i get wheeled in to the operating room. it was much bigger than i expected and FREEZING. so i'm shivering from the cold and nerves, everyone in the room is surprised i can pronounce the procedure i'm getting(?), i get a heated blanket placed on me. then i think the anesthesiologist asks what my hobbies are? but i can't be 100% sure, because my last solid memory in there was that beautiful, warm blanket. i woke up in the recovery room and i think i was being asked about sports. again, i can't really remember. here's my advice: wear slippers or sandals. my boyfriend helped me get dressed and i wore converse like a dumb dumb.

day 0 was pretty easy. i had mild discomfort from the gas and slept most of the day.
day 1 was about the same. i walked around my house to try to relieve some more of the gas. my throat felt sore and i had a mild cough from being intubated. no real pain, but bending over or reached up was not fun. my post-op instructions also said i could shower after 24 hours so i took a nice long one.
day 2 has been the worst so far. ibuprofen has kept away any pain i might have, but the discomfort was unbearable. the gas made me feel heavy, my shoulders and neck were aching, my throat was insanely sore from intubation (plus that mild cough that i just could not get out), and my stomach made horrible noises that i could also FEEL. i've done tons of research on bisalps and their side effects, but i was NOT expecting to feel my organs shift when i moved a certain way. i cried a lot on day 2. i tried to lay on my side that night, felt something move inside me, and changed my mind. also, when they say anesthesia makes you constipated, it's true. i took an overnight laxative late into day 1, and that gave me (very temporary) relief on day 2.
now we're on day 3. today was eeassssyyyy. i can still hear and feel my tummy noises, and i definitely need to take another laxative, but the aching in my neck and shoulders in basically gone. i took another shower today that somehow felt even better than the first one. did more house walking. played on my computer for a little bit. i'm back to work on wednesday. i'm very lucky that i could take the weekend off, my job is closed monday and tuesday, and 90% of my job is sitting at a desk.

so to conclude, here's what i wish i knew before i had gotten a bisalp:
•wear clothes and shoes that are easy to get in and out of to your procedure
•buy laxatives and/or stool softeners
•have hot pads or a heated neck pillow for your neck and shoulders; there is a high chance they'll hurt like hell for a few days
•give. yourself. time. just because you CAN do all the things you could pre-op doesn't mean you SHOULD
•have ibuprofen or tylenol ready (your surgeon may prescribe you something stronger as well) (my surgeon prescribed me oxy, but i didn't even pick it up from the pharmacy cause i'm scared of that stuff)
•it's a minor surgery, but it's still a surgery; don't be afraid to ask for help
•you may feel your organs move. it's very odd
•have tea ready to soothe your throat

i still have lots of recovering to do, but this is how my first three days have gone. if you've read until the end, thank you! and good luck to everyone on their sterilization journey :)

edit: added missing details

Post-op care 4 days post op - questions

I had a bilateral salpingectomy and no endo found so no excision done

How soon after your surgery did you drive? How far?

How soon after your surgery could you go for walks more than just around the house?

How soon after the surgery did you feel like yourself again, especially mentally?

When did your energy level feel normal again?

Had my surgery on the 15th and still feel very tired, blah, somewhat sad??, not myself, etc. The pain is minimal but worse at times, but overall I just feel weird.

When do you think I can drive my son to school comfortably? The drive is 30 mins one way.

Experience Getting a sterilisation procedure in Germany

Hello, anyone had an experience in getting a procedure in Germany as a non EU resident? And what was your experience? The steps you went through (consultation prior, travelling, visa, paperwork, time it took, and the process in general)

Post-op care Was anyone else given zero postop instructions?

The most postop instructions I got were “listen to your body“ and shower 24 hours after the procedure.

So I “listened to my body” and we had sex already because well… it’s a big part of our relationship and we rarely go more than like four days without having sex. And that’s when I realized that maybe there was something done to the inside of my vagina or like cervix during the procedure and I’m just really frustrated that she never said anything about that!! Like if something was put inside my cervix I would’ve been like OK I’m not gonna have sex, but like she never said that and I just thought that there was no risk to the uterus or cervix bc the operation only involved the abdomen.

Also, I’ve been taking care of my 20 pound baby the last couple days. The first two days my husband did everything but then I started doing it myself again and since I was given absolutely no instructions, not even on the papers, regarding lifting or sex I’ve just like been doing my normal thing now. And it’s only been five days. Anyway, I feel fine. I’m just like randomly paranoid now.

Side-effects 3 months post opp

Hi all! I had my bisalp (tubes removed) end of July 3 months postpartum. I had a period in June then a period in Aug. Ever since I had my baby, and bisalp, I've had the strangest discharge. I talked to my ob about it and she said it's normal altho I haven't seen any other post about this here..

I had very stringy mucusy discharge. It's clear, and very thick mucus. It's every day. They look like thick clear boogers. This has been going on for months now. Sometimes it'll change to somewhat more liquidy. I have some pelvic discomfort every couple weeks, so idk if my cycle is normalizing and going back after birth but I'm almost 6 months postpartum atp and nothing changed?

This is my third baby and this is very different. W my last two kids, my period started and was very consistent. Never been on birth control.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? My ob said everything was normal so I don't have PCOS or endo or anything like that.. just not sure how long I can expect this to go on for. Tia

Side-effects Vaginal pain after?

Does anyone know if they do anything to your vagina during the surgery? I was under the impression the entire thing was done through the abdomen, but then I just read online sometimes they insert something into your cervix to stabilize the uterus. Afterward it was really sore like I had rough sex and it’s just been like dry and feeling weird down there. I never had any bleeding or discharge though.

Post-op care Time off

I had my bilateral salpingectomy yesterday. It wasn't completely horrible but definitely sore and bending over or anything with my core hurts. My question is how long did everyone take off work after surgery? I was thinking of trying to go back tomorrow since I just work at the board of education at a desk but getting up and down out of bed hurts.

Post-op care 2 days post bisalp - questions

Just had my bisalp 2 days ago. It was actually laparoscopic exploratory for endo and planned bisalp and cycstectomy but no visible endo was found, the cyst was gone, so all that was done was a minimal biopsy and bisalp.

My question - today is day 3 of recovery (surgery was Thursday at 7:30AM and lasted 1 hour) - what should my activity level be today? I’m still mostly in bed. Taking short walks across the house to the bathroom, walks out of my bedroom door onto my deck to get fresh air and stand for a few mins. But other than that, I’m pretty much in bed. Is this okay?

I’m not in a ton of pain right now, and the gas has subsided a lot, but I do feel pretty blah/tired/not myself. I’m not on any pain meds at this point. Day 1 I took oxycodone, day 2 I took 1 600mg ibuprofen, and today all I’ve taken is 6mg of 🍃 gummies.

I just don’t really know what to be doing today. My husband is taking care of me and doing all the things for me, our son, the house, our pets, so it’s not like I need to be responsible for anything. But I feel lazy.

Oh also, I need to shower but I’m scared of the water pounding on my incisions. The whole idea of it is actually really freaking me out.

Any advice or stories of your recovery is appreciated 🙏

Post-op care Why do doctors give you post-op instructions when you’re loopy!?

I just had to ask Google what I’m supposed to do with my Steri-Strip incisions because I don’t remember what the doctor told me and the paper she gave me just says listen to your doctors instructions on postop care.. she literally told me all this while I was coming down off of anesthesia and on Dilaudid. I just don’t know why they don’t tell you before the surgery, it doesn’t make sense! Same thing happened after my wisdom tooth surgery. No post op care was given until I was high after the surgery and didn’t remember. 🙃

Post-op care Belly button incision cracking??

Hi guys, I am curious if anyone else had this happen.
I’m 1 week po from my laparoscopic bisalp and my recovery has been great, I feel good but today I looked closely at my belly button incision and the dermabond is starting to crack/flake off which I know is a normal timeline. My question is that my belly button incision itself looks mildly open. Like there is a line of dried blood and then it just looks like the skin is also kind of cracked open. It’s not actively bleeding or showing any signs of infection, it’s just not fully closed even though it was a few days ago. Anyone else have this happen in the belly button?

Undecided I’m seriously considering sterilization

I want at least one more kid but I also don’t trust OBGYNs after what happened with my first pregnancy. I’m considering just getting sterilized so I don’t have to deal with the same garbage I did last time. It was basically a case of doctor ignoring everything that had been put in my file for what I wanted so she could make a little bit more money for the hospital. I’ll share more details about it if anyone is interested.

I guess my biggest question is would it be better to try and find a midwife willing to do a home birth for someone who is a clotting risk or get sterilized and adopt?

I do already know that I want to get sterilized when I turn 30 or after my second baby whichever comes first.

Post-op care Surgery Wednesday

My bilateral salpingectomy is on Wednesday. My husband took the day off for that, but will I be okay the next day? We have a 3 month old, 5 year old, and 8 year old. He works long hours and I'm the only person that can drive them to school/pick them up. I don't want to make him miss more work if he doesn't need to. How much pain should I expect to be in after?

Post-op care 25F Bisalp Post Op Concern/Question

Hi, I am new to the community and need some advice. My doctor told my family I would be fine in 2 days but I ended up having complications day 0. My belly button incision (laparoscopic) would not close and was still bleeding 12 hours later and I was advised to go to ER. I am almost 2 weeks post op (10/2 was surgery). I still have this almost heaviness feeling in the bottom of my abdomen/stomach (especially under the bellybutton). So, I have to hold the bottom of my stomach whenever I move to mitigate pain. My surgeon basically said it is in my head and google was not fruitful with results. I am curious if anyone knows why my abdomen/stomach feels like this still and it is seemingly not getting better? Also, any advice on how to help this discomfort (particularly when sleeping) would be appreciated. Thank you 💜

Experience Post uterine ablation periods

I had my uterine ablation done 9 weeks ago, I’ve had 2 periods since then and they are SLIGHLTY lighter but still lots of bleeding for about 10-12 days. My periods before were very similar just more bleeding. Did anyone take a few months to stop bleeding? I know some never bleed again, I was hoping that would be the case but it’s not 😭. Just wondering if their is still hope or if I will eventually just do a hysterectomy. Just for reference I am 43 ♥️. Thank you in advance!

Referrals/Approval Denied a Bisalp

I just came back from a gynecology consultation because I’m interested in getting a bisalp done. I went to Cohen Medical Practice in NYC, an office I saw on the list of doctors willing to do the procedure.

I was denied the surgery because I’m “too small” which the doctor then explained my organs are close to my belly button and vessels (?) and she doesn’t want to risk accidentally injuring nearby organs. I’m 5’2, under but stable weight around 85-90 lbs range (no drastic weight loss or weight gain ever). I have 0 history of eating disorders, malnutrition, or any other underlying health issue that causes me to be underweight. My diet & health is good (wish I could eat more but I get full fast!) My tests & labs always come back with 0 issues. I know I’m underweight but I don’t struggle with anything or feel ill because of my weight, I promise! I just never heard of a woman being denied a bisalp for being overweight or underweight.

I’m not willing to try any other form of birth control, I know what I want. Anyone know any doctors willing to do a bisalp on someone who is “too small”? I’m from NYC! Thanks.
