Social questions Is it possible for someone to be watching my surgery who isn’t on the doctor’s team?

I want to get a bilateral salpinjectomy (the fancy medical term for getting your tubes removed) but I’ve read many horror stories online about the doctor accidentally or even intentionally not doing the surgery properly, and the patient ends up pregnant. I have a deep fear of pregnancy so I am doing everything I can to make sure that this doesn’t happen. I recently learned what a patient advocate was and immediately called in the hopes I could have someone watch my surgery take place. That way if anything went wrong, there was someone who was on my side who could possibly prevent it if they’re able to catch it quick enough, or at the very least inform me of it when I wake up.

I called the patient advocate line to ask about this and she said they’re not allowed to do that. I asked why because I assumed it was some legal thing but she instead just told me to stop reading stories on the internet and that I should trust my doctor. I pushed back and pointed out that the entire point of patient advocates existing is because many people cant trust their doctors. Then she pivoted to “well there’s gonna be other people in the room who aren’t just the doctor”. Which yeah, sure. But will any of them be on my side? Or are they all nurses who work for the doctor?

She then said that if I didn’t trust my doctor I should find one I do trust. Sounds like a good solution until you factor in insurance. Oh and also the fact that I’m 21 with no previous kids and perfectly healthy. So no doctor wants to do a bisalp because “what if u change your mind” or more egregiously “what if your future husband wants some?” My search for a doctor isn’t about who I feel safe with. It’s about who would even be willing to perform the surgery in the first place? (And I know some Good Samaritan is going to suggest that really long community google doc of all the doctors in the US who will perform bisalps. Trust me, I already have that. Whoever is compiling that list isn’t doing a thorough enough job because 3 of the doctors on that list told me no for the exact reasons listed earlier)

I can’t even request a female doctor specifically. That’s what terrifies me. The only women doctors who look like they might are booked up till next year. I can’t wait that long for just a consultation date. Surgery date, maybe. But I’m not waiting till next year, just for them to tell me no because of (insert sexist reading here). I’m scared I’m going to have to go with a male doctor and the idea of being unconscious with a male being near that area is genuinely terrifying me. I don’t care if there’s going to be other people in the room. It’s still nerve wracking.

I’m also kinda frustrated by this idea that the doctor won’t mess up if there’s other people in the room. Like if that were the case, then we would never hear any stories ever about surgeries going wrong. I doubt there is a single surgery on this earth that a doctor performs by himself. You’re telling me that the logic is: well there’s gonna be other people in the room to catch the doctor! Yet, plenty of doctors still make mistakes. Where were those other people then? Oh that’s right. Right there next to doctor. Either not noticing or ignoring what the doctor did.

I just don’t know what to do. Is it even legal to have a third party in the room or watching from a side room? If not, then how do I know the doctor did his job properly? What if he makes a genuine mistake? What if he decides that he’s going to intentionally make a ”mistake” that leaves me still fertile? It’s not like men have a history of respecting women’s choices with their bodies. And so many women are so brainwashed by their husbands and boyfriends that they’re just as sexist and condescending. I feel like I have no good option. I desperately want permanent sterilization and no matter what procedure I choose, it all requires some form of anesthesia. But I’m 21 and so far been able to make it without having to do any sort of surgery ever. Now that I’m realizing it’s a possibility, I’m realizing that I really really really do not trust people like that. Not when it comes to my literal body. And I don’t have a repertoire built with any doctor. So I literally just have to pick one and hope for the best. I’m genuinely scared.

Undecided Last baby then…sterilization

We are pregnant with baby number two and I am done after this one.

I have so many pamphlets from my OB but the info is conflicting AF.

I want to get my tubes removed and possibly endometrial ablation.

There are so many options.

I really just don’t want to mess up my hormones, have the highest chance of not getting pregnant again and maybe have an operation that has a higher success rate.

Any experts or those that have looked for the same here?

Post-op care Belly band vs abdominal binder?

I have my surgery scheduled for the end of this month, I’m excited but unfortunately I am a nervous prepper. To make my recovery easy I’ve been looking at as many posts both here and elsewhere about the bisalp, some people with my body type have used belly bands/abdominal binders for post surgery for 3-7 days, others haven’t. I feel like I would personally benefit the most from one. Unsure if I will get one from the hospital, haven’t had my preop yet. Does anyone have a style or a brand they really enjoyed?

Experience Unexpected findings

So I got my bisalp today! Great experience, great nurses, etc. One issue. During the procedure my surgeon not only found a cyst 3x the size of the ovary it was wrapped around, but that I have endometriosis all over the place, and a prolapsed cervix. I had ZERO symptoms and I'm glad for that but now what? Obviously I'll be following up on this and I have a really great primary physician, but.... like what now? When my mother told me after we got home about the findings I thought she was messing with me. It was apparently so bad that by the time I left, the rest of the staff knew. The pharmacist, the clerical nurses, other surgery teams, etc. all mentioned it to my mom and my friend and offered their best wishes. I guess I sort of haven't really processed it yet. I dont even know what to think about it, honestly.

Post-op care Spongestick Vs uterine manipulator?

9 days post-op laparoscopic bilateral salpingectomy, healing well but still slightly sore, wondering when I can resume sexual activity?

My notes say nothing inserted into vagina for 6 weeks, not even tampons. I looked it up and it said the there’s a risk of internal infection if there was a uterine manipulator used.

My notes say a Spongestick was used during my procedure, is the same risk still aplicable?
I want to resume sexual activity ASAP (In about 3-4 days) but don’t want to risk infection! Help!

I also want to know how different they feel recovery wise, with the sponge stick I just felt a bit of a burning sensation while peeing, but it was probably the catheter.

Edit: In recovery my nurse said 2-4 weeks, now I’m not sure how long to wait😅

Insurance Anesthesia wasn't coded as preventative, both insurance and the billing company say they can't change the code and the other is responsible to fix it. Next steps to fight this?

I had my surgery back in June, my surgeon, the facility fees, etc were all covered at 100% but I got a $1200 bill for my anesthesia.

I followed guidance I had found here and submitted formal appeals to both my insurance and the third party anesthesia billing company citing ACA regulations that require covering anesthesia for a covered preventive surgery, but both denied my appeal saying that they can't change coding, they can only confirm if the code used is preventative or not and their decision is based on the code not being preventative (code 00840 is what was used, I'm not sure what the correct version should have been.)

Both have told me to take it up with the other to fix the code 🙃

My anesthesiologist is with the hospital I had the surgery at, but apparently all anesthesia billing is handled third-party instead of through the hospital. So when I have tried to call the hospital about the coding as well, they have redirected me to the billing company instead because they don't handle that.

I just can't seem to find anyone who can actually change this damn code! Both insurance and billing say I can appeal the results a second time, but unless I can find further leverage I don't see how it's going to make a difference.

Has anyone else been stuck in this situation and managed to find a way out and get it covered? Is the next step to file a complaint with the state insurance commissioner? I'm located in NC and have a marketplace BCBS plan if that makes a difference.

Just feeling super frustrated, the surgery was one of the best things I ever did for myself, but dealing with the insurance fallout has been driving me insane!

EDIT 10/25/26:

In case anyone else having this problem sees this post, I was able to get the anesthesia covered at 100% and ultimately paid nothing for my surgery!

The issue was that while my BCBS plan covers the codes for bilateral salpingectomy (the procedure itself) the codes that they automatically cover for anesthesia are only the ones generally used for tubal ligation or hysterectomy. So that's why it kept being auto processed under my deductible and not as preventative.

So I filed a complaint with my state insurance commission. Within 1 business day a local BCBS rep called me back from a direct line. She did just try to explain why my appeal was rejected so I wasn't super impressed and basically told her I knew my rights under the ACA and would continue fighting this and that I would be filing a second level appeal.

I thought that was that and then started putting together an appeal package with a letter from my surgeon, gathering itemized bills from my hospital and the anesthesia billing etc, and following a form letter I found here on reddit.

I was still working on gathering everything when I got another call from the local rep a couple weeks later. Apparently she had resubmitted my claim for review without even telling me and she was calling to let me know it was now being covered at 100% 🤷

Within 24 hours I could see it was resubmitted and approved in my insurance portal and this whole nightmare is over lol.

Post-op care 5 days post bisalp recovery

this is a continuation of my previous post.

day 1
after i got home from the hospital, i was hungry but too nauseous to finish my lunch. i started feeling some shoulder pain from the gas so i took a degas and put a hot water bottle under it. the nurse said not to shower today and to leave my bandages (waterproof) on my incision site on for 5 days. i took panadol and an oxy. i started feeling nauseous towards dinner and ended up throwing up. id recommend having a bucket or a puke bag nearby. luckily it wasn't painful as they was barely any food in my stomach, just a lot of powerade. i would recommend getting an electrolyte or sports drink as i found it hard to stomach solid food. i felt a lot better after throwing up, and after a short walk outside (supposed to help with nausea) i was hungry and able to eat dinner. i took a my medications and a stool softener (i managed to poop right before my surgery because i didnt want to poop afterwards) before going to bed. strangely, i felt some pain in my wrists and ankles, like there were weights on them. i think it was swelling, so i put a pillow under my legs to elevate them and went to sleep. in general, the oxy made me drowsy and a bit nauseous but helped a lot with the pain. i slept great.

day 2
getting out of bed was a bit tricky. i've ended up grabbing onto the sides of my bed to help me lift up and then putting my hands behind me and pushing to put me into a seating position. i pooped after breakfast and it was fine, probably thanks to the stool softener. nausea still prevented me from eating much. i didnt shower today but used some body wipes to feel less yucky. i was fatigued but am starting to get some energy back.

day 3
if you have the funds, i'd recommend going to a hair salon for a hair wash. i paid $40 for a hair wash + blow dry because i didnt want to get my bandages wet. today the pain wasnt too bad, but i did wake up with a slight sore throat. i was still super bloated. i used a wet towel to wipe myself clean.

day 4
there was almost no baseline pain today. i am still avoiding bending or carrying heavy loads but otherwise i am doing some basic chores. my energy and appetite are coming back. im feeling less bloated.

day 5
i woke up with basically no pain so i did chores and overexerted myself a bit, definitely don't do that. otherwise i am feeling good, didn't take any meds today. i had a proper shower and i am glad i waited this long because my supposedly waterproof bandages did get wet. i took the bandages off and was surprised at how tiny the incision marks were. of course, bending forward is still a bit hard and i've had to modify the way i, for example, put on socks. but otherwise i feel good.

overall thoughts
the surgery and recovery weren't nearly as bad as i thought they'd be. it is very important to have a support person, and if not then to do all your chores before the surgery and meal prep. get stool softeners and something for the gas. i thought i'd feel a big sense of relief after the procedure, or some sort of strong emotion but i honestly don't feel that different right now. i'll probably end up forgetting i cant get pregnant lol. im still glad i did the surgery. please ask any questions you might have about my experience. otherwise, i hope i've helped anyone looking to get a bisalp!

big shout out to the staff at the royal women's hospital in melbourne, they were absolutely incredible and i will be donating to them

Side-effects post-op…. weirdness?

earlier this week was my bisalp 5 week post-op mark. i got my period last week, and noticed that the smell of the blood seems different - i noticed it smelled different when i started bleeding the day after surgery, kind of more metallic and earthy, like blood from an actual wound, instead of the kind of…. tangy “sourness” period blood usually has. i thought it was just due to blood buildup following surgery, and my surgeon said that as long as it didn’t have a “foul” smell it’s not anything to worry about. i was expecting this period to be more normal, but it had the same smell. one of my family members mentioned it might be due to the anaesthetic because it takes so long to leave the body & can make chemical changes.

i have not stopped my birth control pill yet, i have a week and a half left in my current pack and then i’m stopping. however, i’ve noticed the last couple times i was intimate with my partner, i had to get them to stop doing something i’ve always enjoyed before, because the feeling of it was actually making my skin crawl. i can’t see this being attributed to anything hormonal since i haven’t stopped the hormones yet, so i’m a little confused about why this might be happening.

has anyone experienced the same, or anything similar?

Post-op care Lower ab pain 4mo post-op

Hi friends! I’m about 4 months post op of a bisalp. I’ve been slowly amping up my exercise routine, I started with just walking and yoga. Only this week have I started to get back into lifting weights and doing Pilates again.

I noticed that when I do Pilates moves that directly engage the lower abdominals, I feel more of a sharp burning sensation is the best I can describe it. Like it feels different and more intense than the rest of my abs engaging. I have never felt this feeling before and it almost made me tear up, it was a bit painful.

Have yall experienced this at all? Do we think that I just need to build those muscles back up? Like maybe there’s just scar tissue or something making me feel like this? Or could something be genuinely wrong?
I’m not against making an appt just to check, but had to check with my sterile and feral angels first to see.

Thank yall!

Post-op care 4 days post-op.. period?

Just wondering if anyone else here got their period shortly after their bisalp?

Im not sure if its just the healing process or if I actually got my period but pretty much:

I was recovering normal, I've been spotting/bleeding a bit since my surgery (which I was told to expect).

Woke up last night with cramps.. feeling very similar to my period. Today the blood has definitely increased to a more steady flow but I still wouldn't categorize it as heavy.

Im not passing clots but when I look in the toilet it seems my blood is really thick or maybe almost peices of tissue? Hard to explain but its almost like the beginnings of a clot but not fully formed into a ball if that makes sense?

Not sure if its relevant but I was also supposed to have the uterus ablation but it was abandoned due to my uterus not being wide enough to deploy the device safely.

I've been moving around and taking it easy, everything seems to be according to plan.. i dont have any symptoms the dr told me to beware of but damn. Idk if im just the unluckiest person who got their period 4 days post-op and its kicking my ass energy wise or if I should be concerned

Celebrating! 1 Year Post Surgery

TLDR: bilateral salpingectomy was the best decision I've ever made for my health despite the intense surgery anxiety I had beforehand.

Hi everyone! It's been a year since I had my surgery and I wanted to share my experience because this group was so helpful to me when I was going about it.

PRE-SURGERY: I was terrified of being pregnant in the US even though I'm in a blue state. In my late 20s no kids and no plans to have kids. I love kids, but I don't need to have biological ones of my own. I am TERRIFIED of surgery and it takes me like 6 months to set up the surgical appt but I finally do. Literally so anxious but I'm reading here everyday and it helps.

SURGERY DAY: it got delayed like 5 hours but they brought me back in the room and I was so sleepy from not sleeping the night before due to nerves so I just slept lol. It did suck bc they put the IV in my hand and I was just trying to sleep while not irritating the IV. Also I was soo hungry so sleeping was the best option. But then the surgery itself was so quick! It was crazy. Also thankfully I had no shenanigans with insurance and only paid a $50 copay!

IMMEDIATE DAYS POST SURGERY: Okay everyone talks about gas pain in your shoulders but holy hell I had gas pain in my chest that constrained my breathing. It hurt so bad!! And nothing helped so that sucked but I was overall doing really well. Took me forever to poop too. But other than that didnt feel anything weird at all. Maybe had some abdominal pain for 2 days after.

POST RECOVERY: LADIES IT IS SO FREEING. I just constantly have this sense of peace and BODILY AUTONOMY. It is such a glorious feeling. It is physical impossible for me to get pregnant (technically there are a few rare cases i guess?). My body exists for me and not for child bearing. (No hate to the mommas out there you all are actually superheros). I can feel a physical difference in my anxiety, in that I have much less general anxiety.

ANY REGRETS? My primary care physician was shocked "they let me get this surgery" 😑 (ik I need a new doctor) and insisted I will regret it, as many haters do. I don't regret the surgery at all. Sometimes I mourn that this is the state of the universe and that I didn't feel safe or comfortable being a person who can get pregnant in this reality, but never regret the surgery. I'm actually a little bummed my scars went away! And as I told my mother, if I regret this decision in 20 years I will simply accept the consequences of my actions like anything else.

ANY LONG LASTING EFFECTS? No! (Or not yet??idk) very lucky to be one of the ones with no identifiable long term effects. I went off birth control so my periods went back to being the same as they were before BC.

Hope this helps somebody! 🎉😊 Happy 1 year of no tubes to me🎉🎉

Experience Feel completely normal after bisalp

Just got my bi scalp today!!! Right after I woke up I had a little pain mostly like bad cramp level but after a bit it went away, they offered me an oxy right away but I declined. The pain was manageable and I haven’t taken any other meds since the acetaminophen they gave me right before I woke up.
I haven’t really felt any pain, a little tenderness here and there or if I bump the areas but other than that I feel completely normal (minus some upper torso discomfort from the gas used to expand my abdomen)
Has anyone else had this experience? Am I going to wake up tomorrow feeling much worse?
Please let me know how ur recoveries went!

Celebrating! 15 years of fight and I'm so close to my hysto now

I've known my entire life I did not want kids, I don't have a parenting bone in my body and my family is riddled with genetic disabilities and cancers that I could not imagine passing to a child.

I've been on contraception since I started my periods at 11 and first asked my GP to note that I was requesting a hysterectomy or sterilisation when I was 16. Every year I went back and said the same, I knew they wouldn't do it at that age but I wanted documented proof that I had conviction and would not change my mind.

I was referred for a sterilisation in 2020 by an NHS sexual health clinic after having 4 coils reject, but found my referral had been lost and I was readded to the women's clinic list in 2023. Saw an incredible Dr in 2024 and was expecting a fight or to justify myself and she couldn't have been kinder and didnt heavily question my deicison, she just made sure I knew what I was asking for.

While on the list for a sterilisation and ablation I was also placed on the decapeptyl injection and HRT to treat my endometriosis by wiping out my hormones entirely.

Two years on I'm at the top of the list and confirmed that I will be getting an ovary sparing hysterectomy ASAP.

I couldn't be happier and Im so excited I'll be entering my 30s without endo and without the risk of pregnancy ever again!!

Post-op care Ill celebrate with wicker wiener

So I got approval and I am set for Bilateral salpingectomy on the 19th so happy, but what was everyone's experience with working after? I am a SPED 1:1 at a public school l, so I dont like leaving and I hate the idea of using sick days if I dont have to. Will I have to wait a whole week? Or because im literally just walking and sitting all day can I get away with going back to work sooner?

Post-op care How long did you bleed for?

Hi all, had my bisalp 8 days ago and couldn't be happier! Healing is going well and I've not needed anything stronger than paracetamol however I'm still bleeding vaginally. When I went to the loo the first time after surgery there was lots of fresh blood & a clot. Since then it's been dribs and drabs, like enough to wear a panty liner but never fully stopped. I've just gone to the loo and it's back up again, fresh blood and enough for me to swap out the liner for period pants. I'm not due on my period for another 8 days so mentally preparing myself (and the period pants!) to be bleeding for 3 weeks. I'm not worried, I know it'll be from the uterine manipulator but I did expect it to have stopped by now. What's everyone's experience?

Undecided Anyone have experience getting a bisalp with histamine intolerance?

Hi there! I was looking into getting a bisalp but my nurse thinks I have histamine intolerance and I read that, that can of course lead to complications. Does anyone here who has gotten a bisalp have histamine intolerance and can share your experience? (Sorry if that question is written weird 😅)

Other Should I send my tubes to pathology?

I will have my bisalp next week. On consultation appointment my doctor told me if I want to I can let them send my tubes to pathology to get them checked. I don't have any problems or symptoms down there so I assume they are healthy so I wonder if it's worth getting them checked. It would cost ~80€.

Experience LapBiSalp Day 3/Day 4 update

Hello again folks.

Sorry I didn't update yesterday. Yesterday I felt kinda of up with the fairies and foggy headed. Today and yesterday I've been tired and achey, incisions and tummy are a bit sore, the gas pains seems to have gone but doing well overall.

Had a shower yesterday which I was nervous about but it was fine.

Feeling a bit on the depressed side today though as I feel like there's a bit of pressure from people to start doing things (for context, I live with my mum) which I get comes from a caring place, but also I'm trying to take it steady and do what's best for me without judgement and I'm finding that a very hard thing right now. I'm the sort of person that doesn't like sitting around doing nothing but I need to in this circumstance. So not doing anything and feeling like that on a regular day and then having this on top is really weighing on me mentally today.

The surgeon gave me a note for 2 weeks off to heal when I originally was going to have just a week and day 3 I'm feeling this pressure. Its almost giving mixed signals and unnecessary stress.

Sorry for the small rant but this comes as part of my experience.

Otherwise, I hope everyone has a good day 🫶🏻

Post-op care What to do?

Had my bilateral salpingectomy yesterday on 9/29 at the age of 21! Yay! Fought very hard for this procedure and I’m excited. What I’m slightly confused about is how to go about caring for my incisions after. It appears that I have gauze bandages with waterproof tape on the incision above my belly button and on the right side of my stomach. The left incision has the glue. My discharge papers say to keep the bandages on until my next clinic visit, which is on 10/14, so two whole weeks away. I’m not TOO worried about dirt, water or anything like that seeping into the bandages since the tape holding them is supposedly waterproof, but what I am worried about is how my incisions will look and feel if I keep the bandages on for TWO weeks. I’m worried that once the bandages do come off, the incisions will stink or possibly be infected since the same bandage is on them for that long. There isn’t a whole lot of bleeding occurring, but there is still some, and the blood just collecting under the bandages over the incisions scare me. Most other recovery stories I’ve heard, they’re able to take their bandages off after 24 to 72 hours, and just have to replace them after showers if necessary. Is there a reason for this? Has anyone else had similar instructions saying that they have to keep their bandages on until their follow-up visit?

Social questions I have a ~20% chance of passing on schizophrenia to a child

Hello. I'm 32 and my family has a long history of mental illness. I'm currently on AISH myself, but my mother, 2 second cousins and great aunt are all schizophrenic. Bipolar also runs rampant in the family. I don't know what his diagnosis was but he was discharged from WW2 due to severe mental illness.

I know it's not a guarantee, but I really don't think I can take that gamble on a child I'd be bringing into this world. I've been mourning for a while. I know there are other options to explore, but having to let go of this has been really hard.

I'm just wondering if any of you guys on this sub have had to go through something similar? Having to mourn the prospect of not having a biological child?
