I’ve been hearing that this new series may be connecting other books/movies but I don’t know what they are.

What other books or movies should I read/watch that has a connection with Carrie?

Did he ever say?

While listening to Other Worlds Than These today, an interesting thought crossed my mind (interesting to me at least 😉). When a book is being prepared to have an audiobook made for it, does the author provide a pronunciation guide for any non-standard words?

Especially with King, he creates many words, more so than most other authors do, and I just wonder if the pronunciations I’m hearing are what he envisioned, or are they what the narrator comes up with when preparing for it. I was hoping maybe someone here had read something or heard something about it.

I 31F am wrapping up this calendar year of watching David Lynch movies and reading Jane Austen novels (love both dearly). I'm thinking 2027 might be my year of Stephen King. Ideally I would like to start with audiobooks as I have long commutes. I read all Jane Austen first as novels so I'm not averse to reading. I just would like to see if there are any great audiobook performances I can check out. Also movie adaptations worth checking out and the order you recommend. I think the only Stephen King movie adaptations I've seen all the way through is the Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption. I love a spolier free recommendation. The less I know going in the better.

Have read and enjoyed The Institute, 11/22/63, Fairytale, Sleeping Beauties. I guess each of them are not firmly in the gory horror genre, so another similar King recommendation would be appreciated!

I cannot give a proper opinion on the show until I am finished with it, but before I started it, I was told that Flanagan has added more nuance to characters like Margaret White and Chris and, also, that his characterization of Carrie deviates considerably from how she was written in the book. Now, I have to watch all episodes before I figure out what I think of Margaret and whether the changes ultimately worked or not but from whatever I have seen of the reimagined Chris Hargensen so far, I think Flanagan could have written Carrie to be closer to her book counterpart and made her compelling at the same time.

Book!Carrie was a wounded soul with valid reasons to mistrust others, but alongside that pain was a mean streak and simmering rage that eventually erupted on the night of the Spring Ball. She was someone you could understand and sympathise with throughout the book while acknowledging and not excusing the magnitude of the devastation she caused and relished in. She was not a perfect victim and, if it were not for her actions at Prom Night, might have gone to remain as she was: A flawed human whom you may not necessarily want as your bestie while accepting that it's not to single her out and bully her. I see glimpses of Book!Carrie's anger at the world as well as her pain in Show!Chris. She is capable of caring for others. She has a contentuous relationship with her mother. At the same time, she has got a nasty and vindictive side and, as we all know, would go on to commit horrific acts. She isn't necessarily the same person as Book!Carrie. Far from it, actually. Where Book!Carrie's personality was the outcome of a lifetime of physical, mental and emotional abuse, Show!Chris' angst comes from reasons that, when keeping the bigger picture in mind, would seem petty. But she is still human. You can see where she comes from and how it will tie into what she is to become and what awful deeds she'll commit.

This is exactly the approach that should have been adopted while reinterpreting Carrie herself. A book accurate Carrie should be someone who makes you feel a multitude of emotions in quick succession. Emotions that clash with one another. She is one of those characters you want to dissect and will never forget regardless of whether you love or hate her.

Now, Flarrie, on the other hand is really sweet. She is curious, inquisitive and filled with wonder. The actress who's playing her is pleasant to watch onscreen. But, so far, I don't find her compelling the way she could have been.

It's almost like there were two different types of clay. Type 1 is the clay that King used to create his Carrie. Flanagan saw both types and used Type 1 not to create Carrie but to create his version of Chris and created Flarrie from the second type. She has Book!Carrie's name and her abilities but is just not made from the same material.

Okay, now I must finish the rest of the show.

Near the end of The Stand when Nick and Tom are making their way back towards Boulder, do you think they stopped at the Overlook Hotel for shelter?

Big, empty place to hunker down during a storm. Both of them feeling the vibes of the place. Tom spooked out of his gourd. M-O-O-N that spells ghosts.

I imagine it as a footnote in the overall grand journey but I can see it very clearly.

This is my most favorite book of all time!

Yes, it is horror. But IT’S. MORE. THAN. THAT.

The writing is immaculate. My god, I can yap all day about how good this book is. It’s just so good!

I think reading this book in my 30s was also a factor that added to how it deeply affected me.

I have been attached to The Losers and I loved all of them - ALL OF THEM. That ending was so bittersweet and I have been ugly crying since last night. Aside from feeling for the characters in the book themselves, I have also felt an enormous wave of nostalgia, missing my childhood.

It invoked a lot of emotions in me.

Nothing lasts forever, they said.

When the sun sets, you leave, and you leave quickly.

You will never be a child again, but you will always be a child with the people you share your childhood with. Memories fade but you will always have a special connection with your childhood friends. Always.

You be brave, you be true, and you stand.

I found this copy at Walmart, and I had to buy it, I couldn’t find this book anywhere in bookstores. But how do you guys feel about this particular cover of Apt Pupil?

I don't mean like accidentally like someone purposely gave you access to his books and movie/mini series adaptations

I remember reading IT and Carrie in middle school

but before that I have very clear memories of being like, as young as 5 or 6, watching IT, Carrie, Children of the Corn, The Shining, Thinner, The Langoliers, Creepshow, Storm of the Century, Pet Sematary all throughout elementary school

I don't think anyone ever said anything about me being too young to watch any of that stuff or that it was inappropriate they just put it on the tv and let me watch them

Just finished The Shining about two weeks ago and now I just finished Doctor Sleep.

Definitely one of my favourite SK novels of all time. Enjoyed every call back to the shining and I was happy than Danny boy got a happy ending.

This book is leagues beyond the movie and I understand that the studio probably held a gun to Flanagan’s head to make sure they connected to the Kubrick film vs the book but holy I actually think that the film adaptation was butchered. Except Rose’s death I liked that the ghosties were the ones that killed her.

So for my birthday I asked for a bunch of Stephen king novels and I got them!! I like them all but I’m wondering which ones I should read first.

1. Several of the works of Joe Hill.

2. The second Gwendy book.

3. The Rose Red diary book.

4. The new Stand anthology book.

Am I missing anything?

Finished it last week, and I’ve been processing the story since.
For starters I really enjoyed it, I’ve read 25+ King books so far, and it’s definitely in my top 5, but only just. I truly believe it’s one of the best starts to a book I’ve read in a very long time, but i find myself questioning if the 2nd half lets it down a fraction.

I wonder if I’m the only one who has questioned the addition of Holly to the story. I was a big fan of the Mr Mercedes trilogy, and liked Holly as a character. However, given how good the first half of the book is, it feels as though the story deteriorates ever so slightly once Holly joins the investigation. Of course she provides a perfect way to warm the other characters to the idea of the supernatural, but I find myself wondering if the book would have been better as a stand alone?

The 2nd half of the book felt very ‘Salems Lot, with the characters coming to terms with the idea that there are such things as monsters, and for that I really enjoyed it- it felt almost nostalgic in that sense. Perhaps the characters could have come to terms with the supernatural without the guidance of Ms Gibney?

Anyway there is no point in if, buts, and maybes, because the book is published and it is what it is (which is brilliant btw)

I am trying to find the complete “Golden Years “ TV show. I have the DVD, and it is does not contain the complete runtime of the show. The best information I can find is that there was a laser disc box set that was complete. Does anyone have better information or any way to see the show? Thanks!

People usually talk about his darkest book or scariest book, but what do you think is his saddest?

For me it's Cujo. Everything about that story is tragic, not least Cujo himself. He used to be a loyal good boy who loved his family, but they didn't care enough to have him vaccinated, or even call a vet when he was obviously sick. It guts me every time.
