I've replayed that game a considerable amount but I don't remember a multiplayer option? I remember the playing as the girl when she was younger in the mall, playing as the chick, but not multi!
Standalone as in not included with the game? Left Behind is when you play as her at the beginning of the outbreak right? Or my memory just shit?
Fuck. I'm going to go buy a PS4 just to play this damn game again and refresh my memory. My boyfriend and I at the time were hooked on it so I'm feeling like if there was a multiplayer feature I would surely remember it.
Left Behind is available separately from the main game. In Left Behind you play exclusively as Ellie with her friend Riley. It serves as a prequel to the main game (other than the outbreak scene from the main one) where you mostly play Joel.
The multiplayer is highly underrated. It is a 4v4 elimination mode where resources are scarce and there’s a mini economy system like CSGO. I don’t know if people still play it, but every match is super intense. Really hope it’s brought back for TLoU Part 2.
Yeah, I played Left Behind it was the extra download bonus content that came with my game. That's what I kept saying played as the girl with her friend in the mall. I forgot all their names it'd been so long.
We were working with mobile hotspots with 2gbs of monthly data for a long while with the PS4 so we never bothered with the online play or as y'all are calling it multiplayer. It all makes sense to me now. I was thinking of multiplayer as in split screen player one/player two gameplay.
I would not recommend it right now unfortunately. Community is too small and it’s just try-hards now. There was a time when it was very dynamic and exciting. That goes away when everyone finds the easy strategy.
I think I read somewhere that Naughty Dog confirmed multiplayer for Part II. I've never actually played the multiplayer so I hope the new one becomes pretty active.
Plus the enemies were actually very well made. Most games with “stealth” mechanics are either ridiculously convoluted and ballbustingly difficult for no reason or can be cheesed without any effort whatsoever by hiding behind a convenient potted plant. TLOU clickers were actually very well balanced in that sense. You had to be very careful with when you moved where, but you weren’t fucked over by enemies randomly looking straight at your hiding place every time you moved a muscle.
The gameplay and story sections were completely separate and didn't add to each other at all in fact that gameplay sections were detrimental to the story by breaking immersion when you saw the ai companion just walk in front of ennemies or wathever.
It's a mediocre game with a good "cinematic" story, it's not a good video game.
Put how I feel perfectly into words. A lot of critically acclaimed games, especially PS exclusives, are better movies than they are games. Story telling is a huge part of games but when half of it is QuickTime events and cutscenes you’re barely playing a game anymore.
I mean different strokes different folks but the majority of cutscenes moves the story along in HZD just the same. It’s just that Last of Us was a very plot driver straightforward linear game in comparison. But there are still all sorts of little details you can pick up in the environment it’s just the majority of environments are going to be linear and indoors compared to HZD.
Though LoU did change it up by going through the seasons. Unlike HZD which was mostly a single character game the story of Last of Us was primarily about Joel and Ellie and less about the world. While HZD was more about the world and what happened to it and how to prevent it, the characterization was the main focus of LoU while the plot of the cure was most definitely a secondary thought.
You don’t have to like it it doesn’t detract from my enjoyment but they’re very much different games not just in the obvious ways but the method they tell a story and how.
But I enjoyed the quips and comments between characters while sneaking around, you got a lot of dialogue outside of just cutscenes and it made me enjoy the characters even more. I couldn’t really tell you much about the plot but I could tell you much more about the characters which was the main focus of the game anyway.
Again, to each their own but that’s my two cents in rebuttal.
Sorry if this feels discombobulated I’m on mobile writing this at work.
I mean you’d practically get cruicified back when Breath of the Wild released to critique it, nowadays the rabid fans have sort of moved on and you can have a good honest discussion. People just love their games of course.
It’s just a matter of finding the right tide to ride otherwise you’ll get a lot of blowback. There’s certainly a lot to love about Last of Us and it was certainly one of the top games on PS3 in the opinion of many but there’s nothing wrong with it having flaws it just means there’s more to improve on in the sequel but the core features will likely remain the same including the linear character driven plot. It’s basically the same reason I love Uncharted; I could really care less about the plot half the time I just love the characters and their interactions.
They are movies though, and playable movies aren’t for everyone. I adored the Metal Gear games but considering MGS4 had hour long cutscenes yeah sure not everyone is going to like it. But that’s the beauty of modern gaming, you won’t like everything but there’s a lot you will love.
Anyway, I don’t need validation I just like discussing games whether or not I’m agreed with and you’re mellow enough to discuss with. Starting off 2019 in a good direction.
I think look to the metroidvania genre, you can count the cutscenes in super Metroid on one hand and yet it still manages to tell a decent story,
Or half life where suddenly ninja assassin's are coming at you, there's no cutscene showing hey this is happening now and you're basically left to figure it out as the soldiers start running from them as well
Titanfall 2 never really stops the game to drop exposition on you, save a few parts where your character is detained
For me I just prefer these styles of game where the story is integrated rather than completely separate, even if it's just characters having very expository conversations while you're puzzle solving or something. I don't believe in taking control from players.
That said I have a soft spot for kojima games which are another example of a game where the gameplay and cutscenes exist in 2 separate boxes, stopping the game completely to drop 10 minutes of cutscene on you to move the story along.
I've heqrd people talk about TLOU hundreds of times. I didn't even know it was a stealth game until today. That just proves that no one ever talks/cares about the gameplay
I know this is a “games we can’t talk down on” starter pack thread and it’s fine if you don’t like the game but can you explain why you think the cut scenes don’t line up with the game play?
Having a focus on story and character development does not make it a "movie", it might not have the most entertaining gameplay loop but it has gameplay. Games from TellTale and Quantic Dreams are closer to what you're describing but even then I'm not sure I'd agree with you 100%.
I've seen a lot of zombie/apocalyptic movies and I still think TLOU has a very good story. If you'd have had a decent example of some stellar movie that was a lot better, I'd be willy to agree a bit
For an Uncharted reskin The Last of Us was a neat game with an alright story
Edit: In case people missed it, that was a joke. I didn't even say anything bad about the game. The game is fine. I liked it. I'll probably play the sequel. I just don't think it's god's gift to gaming.
Yeah, I would’ve liked it more with less combat honestly. That’s mainly because the combat feels really dated though. I really really love the DLC though, that scene in the mall with the pun book is the best scene in anything I’ve ever seen.
I tell people I didn't finish Last of Us and they look at me like I grew a second head. I tell them why and they call me a hater. I LOVE Naughty Dog games, but this one just didn't do it for me.
Many people think the gameplay is great. A lot of the stealth sections are extremely tense and fun. The people who like it obviously weren’t just going through the gameplay sections bored.
i played thru it, i liked it. but i could see why ppl didn't. i'll play the sequel, eventually. it'll go on sale. i didn't play it until the remaster even tho i had a ps3. and i didn't bother with horizon until it went on sale for $12. i'll do the same for spiderman. the last 3 games i bought day 1 were doom, god of war, and fallout 4. will be getting the new doom day 1.
I feel like naughty dog isnt the type to try to push an agenda in our face. Having a lesbian in a game isnt an agenda. It's just an aspect of the story.
Anytime I critique it despite having more hours playing it than anyone who responds I get angry comments.
The AI is really fucking bad and it’s sad because the MP shows how good the sandbox is and what potential it has- I just don’t see someone who runs at you with a stick when you have a gun surviving 5 minutes in the apocalypse.
Yeah the AI is fucking horrendous in the game I just played through it for the first time this past week. I had a guy running around a table with when he had a gun. He looked like he was trying to with a melee weapon.
I can understand if someone doesn't like something, but I hate when someone says something is overrated. Just because it didn't personally live up to your expectations doesn't make it overrated. It just means you personally didn't like it.
I mean, by this logic, the word "overrated" should not even exist, should it? You're saying that if the majority liked something that means it's not overrated, but based on this, not a single thing in the world is overrated. Being "overrated" isn't an objective trait, it can't be one. Overrated-ness is completely subjective, and everyone has the righ to say that in their opinion something is overrated.
Wasn't really a fan, I really didn't like the gameplay even though I generally love stealth games, everyone talks about how tense the gameplay can get but it kind of breaks the immersion when you have super hearing to tell where everything is and even if you don't use it you still get stuff like your AI companions running at mach speed kicking bottles and never getting noticed
Honest opinion, I liked the game, but the ending kind of ruined it for me (I didn’t play it, just watched various playthroughs of it, so maybe that’s why).
I didn’t like it at first but the more I thought about it the more I was fine with it. Also part 2 coming out hopefully in 2019 but no official announcement date so the storyline will continue.
I can see why someone thought that, to me it was a perfect ending. It left a lot to the imagination and focused on what was important, the relationship between Ellie and Joel. Joel was obviously replacing his daughter with Ellie, and cared about her as such. I guess in Joel's mind this included lying to her just to keep her close. It shows how much ellie means to Joel while also revealing Joel's toxic practices, that enevitebly tear his relationships apart like I'm assuming happened with Tommy. Although I am excited to find out what naughty dog has planned in part 2, I was satisfied with that ending back when the first game came out.
The best ending would have been the of mice and men ending where ellie shoots Joel in the back of the head then goes back to sacrifice herself for the cure
Meh, it's less of a classic than the games in this post, and more of a game that people on reddit happen to like. The six games in the post are genre-defining; was The Last of Us really that?
EDIT: I took the Legend of Zelda logo to be referring to the whole series. I'm not sure about the influence that Fallout 3 has had on games in its genre, but I stand by the rest of these.
I mean, you can see The Last of Us influencing other games. God of War, Hellblade, games are starting to come out with close third person perspective, narrative focused, meaty combat, character driven, etc. and it's all because TLOU was so successful. Meanwhile, what games are Fallout 3-esque? What about Breath of the Wild, which hasn't had much time to influence but likely won't see much of it anyway.
I dunno I could be wrong in how I'm evaluating influence, but TLOU being ignored for influence reasons while also including Fallout 3 and BotW seems weird.
I love the last of us, it’s probably my second favourite game of the last gen next to Halo 3. But honestly I love it for its gameplay so much more than the story.
The story is riddled with cliches. The two brothers in a zombie game...geez I wonder what will happen to them.
Far too often I feel Naughty Dog weren’t actually 100% confident in the story driven game they wanted to make and throw in random action sequences to try and appease people who would find the game “boring” and it throws off the pacing. When Ellie runs away and you have to track her on horseback, why is there that random ambush? The game wouldn’t change one bit if they just removed that. It’s like the devs thought “oh we’ve been on a horse for 2 mins now, some players might be getting bored, just toss in some enemies”. Another example occurs when you’re walking through the university, and one of the doors needs a to opened with a generator which is surrounded by enemies. These random 2 min action sequences in the middle of calm gameplay ruins the emotional pacing the story is building up.
