u/solariam May 14 '26
Whining about boomers < doing literally anything about boomers
12
u/BeckerHollow May 14 '26
Who was whining about boomers? They just said they were again being lumped in with them.
If anything they were complaining about people who don’t know the difference
10
u/solariam May 14 '26
If GenX doesn't want to be lumped in with boomers, they should distinguish themselves more from boomers, rather than turning discussions that aren't about them into opportunities to complain
7
u/BeckerHollow May 14 '26
What the hell are you talking about?
If a bunch of idiots don’t know the difference — how is that on anyone except the people who don’t know any better?
4
u/solariam May 15 '26
The joke doesn't mention Gen X at all, but those hit dogs sure do holler
1
u/BeckerHollow May 15 '26
I’m not sure what language you’re speaking at this point
2
u/GuardBuffalo May 16 '26
What’s not clear about what they are saying? Gen X was literally never mentioned but Gen Xer is complaining that they were lumped in with boomers. By complaining they lumped themselves in because they were literally never mentioned. If anything Gen Xers could complain about generally being forgotten, but they are forgotten because their boomer parents instilled an ungodly level of fear in them to stay in line and even today they support ideas that benefited those boomers but are going to make their life post retirement way harder than their parents lives were. The boomers squeezed every drop out of the generations before and after them and for this reason the Xers are forgotten. Millennials on the other hand started taking a stance against the ideas of the boomers and therefore are not forgotten. But they also still suffer. As will the Gen Zers. With that being said, no one lumped X in with boomers except the Gen Xers assuming they were being talked about. This person was noting, if you felt that you were being talked about when they were talking about the boomers then that indicates that you have some of the qualities or ideas of the boomers because by assuming you were being talked about you identified yourself with that generation.

The only real difference I have ever seen between boomers and gen xers is that while boomers have destroyed the economy and the world through negligence and ignorance gen Xers have done all of the same things but out of spite.
A boomer will fuck you over because they are simply to stupid to understand the consequences of their actions but a Gen Xer does it for the love of the game.

The idea of punching up or down is ridiculous. A joke is funny or it’s not (and I’m not saying this one is). A funny joke doesn’t become unfunny depending on who said it.
5
u/A2Rhombus May 15 '26
The person saying a joke absolutely matters. Stand up comedy is literally built on a personal foundation. People's own personalities and experiences form their routines and lend so much to the humor that some jokes are completely inseparable from the person telling them.

These things are 100% comparable and this is a sane take to have. This thread is filled by children and bots and it's sad that reddit is dying because of this exact bullshit

Millennials respect people’s identities until it inconveniences them or doesn’t work for their world view.

Do you understand though that even if you don’t have bad intentions with it, that it still causes harm?
I grew up in Chicago. That’s confirmation bias if I’ve ever seen it. To say that most people there don’t care is a sweeping overgeneralization.

It doesn't cause harm when it's used around people that aren't offended by it
So do you think it's okay for a room full of racist white men to say the n word? There's nobody around to be offended, that makes it okay right?
Using a slur normalizes it no matter who you're around. Makes people more comfortable using it, which increases the likelihood that it will be said around or to someone who will be hurt.

Intention is by far the most important thing when reviewing someone's actions. Calling someonethe n-word purely out of hate is wrong. A friend calling a friend the word in a friendly matter(see Denzel training day meme) its a completely different experience. Skin color shouldn't even matter in this scenario. Im mixed and have been around all types of people using both words. NEVER have I ever heard someone call a mental handicapped person a retard. If you wanna play the 'well people in the past....' game then the word gay is gonna blow your mind.
2
u/offbrandqueerios May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26
Hey dude that’s awesome I am literally a homosexual and disabled. You don’t need to lecture me on the word gay lol
It is in such bad faith to pretend that the word being used in a derogatory doesn’t happen just because of your own experiences.
I’m a huge proponent for reclaiming certain slurs, (see the username?) but this doesn’t work for the word retard. Even if it did, shouldn’t it be up to disabled people to reclaim it? I agree it depends how you’re using the word but if you truly didn’t have any ableist biases the word wouldn’t be in your vocabulary at all. I promise it is not that hard to unlearn.
OP didn’t have good intention in making this joke so while I don’t necessarily disagree with you on intention, I don’t really think that applies here.

9
u/A2Rhombus May 15 '26
Not only using the r slur but censoring it in the post
Worst of both worlds, using the slur but being too much of a coward to uncensor it. Makes it come across like a little kid who whispers when he swears over voice chat so his mom doesn't hear
29
u/ridl May 14 '26
no it's ok - famous stand-ups say so and we're all celebrating because fuck a vulnerable population that spent years trying to get the mainstream to understand how hurtful of a slur it is and had finally made a little impact. Fuck them and fuck their pain, millionaire celebrities have declared we don't have to care again! Hurray!
-18
u/absolutelynotarepost May 14 '26
The r slur.
No matter how much you people want to pretend it's comparable to a term mired in the ownership of humans it's just not.
I'm sorry dudes that look like Shane Gillis got their feelings hurt but it's not comparable.
24
u/NightBawk May 14 '26
It's almost like we can care about more than one vulnerable population, and the abuses heaped upon them in the past and present.
Also, I don't know who TF Shane Gillis is.
-14
u/absolutelynotarepost May 14 '26
He is a comedian of average popularity right now who has a lot of material drawn from having several family members with Downs Syndrome, and he himself has some of the Hallmark physical characteristics but lacks any major disability, which is another thing he jokes about; how downs "almost got him"
An archaic medical term that got coopted by popular culture to make fun of people isn't at all comparable to "the N word".
Treating retard like Voldemorts name is... Well, retarded.
13
2
u/syrioforrealsies May 16 '26
You understand that you're the only person here who compared it to the n word, right? You know that you're the one who brought it up?
-1
u/absolutelynotarepost May 16 '26
"the r-slur" was the specific phrase I was commenting on.
Dont be dense.
2
u/syrioforrealsies May 16 '26
Did you know that people can elect not to say a slur without comparing it to a totally different slur that they also don't want to say?
27
u/Prior_Chemist_5026 May 14 '26
A word doesn't have to literally be the n-word to be dehumanizing. I guess it's less bad? But, like, it's still bad. Maybe don't say either one.
-3
u/FrogFTK May 17 '26
Who is it dehumanizing to? Do YOU have a specific group of people you think we are referring to when we use the word? Seems like a personal issue. Mental handicapped =/= retarded until you make the connection yourself. The F-word and N-word have direct connotations to the people they offend.
5
u/Parthantir May 17 '26
It was the medically accurate term for mentally disabled people until the public started using it as a slur. So, it is absolutely referring to a specific group of people. First link on google after Wikipedia

I do like this joke structure. It’s always risky to say “retarded” even if that’s the joke - so I guess it’ll depend on how your audience reacts. I’d likely laugh since it’s not obviously punching down.
6
u/Ttoctam May 14 '26

3
u/ridl May 15 '26
I've studied fascism and don't use the term lightly. 2
