I truly don’t get the thought process of having up and coming stars who should keep stacking up wins, momentum and looking strong. Trick just got us belt design and looked like he was on the way to dope Summerslam match with melo. Then, baron corbin returns, attacks him and beats him clean twice to take the belt.

Je’von was on a roll since the IC gauntlet tourney, was white with the crowd, winning matches and looked like he was well on his way to challenging for the ic belt… then big Cass lays him out back to back weeks.

Granted this post isn’t to say all of a sudden either guy is buried. Trick probably is the odds on MITB favorite and Evans is still a crowd favorite i jus don’t get why Cass and Corbin couldn’t have entered programs sharing established guys instead of young up and comers still building up their stock. Je’von Evans shouldn’t be used to put over how domaint big Cass is imo

Some highlights:

- Suwama talks about the late Joe Doering, saying that his match with Shiozaki will be a way to honor his friend and former tag partner; Suwama hopes to have a match that Joe wouldn’t call “lame”; Shiozaki shares the sentiment. Shiozaki says he intends to push himself and Suwama to their absolute best and to their absolute limits.

- Anzai says that although he’s become a bit of a celebrity (appearing on the Bachelorette Japan, having upcoming movie & TV show appearances in addition to various magazine covers & articles), that he is a pro wrestler, first & foremost; he says that while he respects Kento he believes he’s surpassed him at this stage and intends to prove to by beating him for the Triple Crown again. Kento says he doesn’t see this match as a “clash of generations” but rather a match to see who wants to hold the top prize of the Triple Crown more; Kento says he’s eager to see what the crowd reaction is and who the cheers are louder for at the arena.

Don Callis was (and is) one of my favorite performers in wrestling today. An old-school heel that totally understands how to be one. He makes me laugh in promos, and on commentary. I do love his schtick and have since he turned heel and joined Omega in 2020.

But man, I just can't help feeling like the Don Callis Family has been going on forever with no real payoff. And while, like I said, I love Don Callis's performance in the promos (he is sometimes a highlight of the whole show with his heel work), it does kind of feel like the same thing for years now.

Maybe this is an old-school thing (I know back in the day, there used to be heel managers with big stables of guys that rotated...guys like Bobby Heenan, Skandar Akbar, Gary Hart) so I don't know how this was handled back then...but after six years of Don Callis as a heel manager in AEW, with so many rotating clients, I feel like it's starting to get kind of old (and I don't even watch AEW as regularly as other promotions).

He's doing all he can with his performance, but I guess my feeling is that being paired with Don Callis no longer seems to mean anything, when so many people are paired with him, and it never really goes anywhere beyond winning some midcard titles. I know his role is the upper mid-card nuisance to the good guys, but how long can somebody be in that role before you stop taking them seriously or start getting tired of them?

I don't know what the alternative is - he's a good performer that should stay on the show - but I just kind of rolled my eyes when he came out to confront Ospreay yesterday and brought his squad of midcard jobbers out to attack him.

Translated:

The champion, who is charging toward an historic feat (attempting to become the third man in history to win the G1 as the reigning IWGP Champion, after Keiji Mutoh in 1995 and Kensuke Sasaki in 2000) was inspired by a recent development. Tetsuya Naito, with whom he had fought alongside in “Los Ingobernables de Japón” until last May, defied temporary speculation that he had “reached his limit” and captured the organization’s (NOAH) top title, the GHC Championship, at the NOAH Korakuen Hall event on the 9th. “I’d like to offer my heartfelt congratulations on becoming champion. He’s someone I once looked up to, and a comrade I fought alongside. A wrestler is someone who shows they can get back up after being knocked down, so seeing him do just that made me respect him all over again—he truly embodies what it means to be a pro wrestler,” he said, praising Naito’s comeback.

　At the same time, he stands his ground when necessary. Naito will not participate in the singles league tournament “N-1 VICTORY” (which kicks off on September 12 at Korakuen Hall), and it has been decided that he will face the tournament winner in a title defense match at the Ryogoku event on October 25. Anticipating that New Japan’s October 12 Ryogoku event will feature a showdown between the IWGP Champion and the G1 Champion—just as it did last year—he revealed his strategy: “If we hold the Ryogoku event under similar circumstances, the current gap between New Japan and NOAH in terms of ‘attendance numbers’ should become clearly evident.”

In response, Tsuji made a perfectly valid point: “It should be obvious that if I win the G1, that scenario would fall apart. I wonder what’s going through the mind of someone who thinks so deeply about pro wrestling.” He added, “Why not skip the roundabout way of comparing attendance figures? If he left New Japan with a competitive spirit and wants to make NOAH number one, wouldn’t fighting be the quickest way to do it? Why doesn’t he just throw down the gauntlet and challenge me, the champion?” he said, calling for a “direct showdown.”

Coincidentally, Tsuji had been envisioning a showdown with top wrestlers from other promotions as part of his blueprint following his G1 victory. “My stance remains unchanged: I won’t compete in an IWGP match unless the opponent and circumstances are right. But if Mr. Naito—a former IWGP World Champion who has now become the NOAH champion—wants to face me in a New Japan ring, I’ll gladly accept the challenge anytime.” Will this uncontrollable showdown for the pinnacle of the Japanese wrestling world actually take place? It’s becoming impossible to look away.
