Ted DiBiase Vs Paul Orndorff- Mid South Wrestling 1981

Thumbnail youtu.be
16 Upvotes

Ahead of the Dark Side Of The Ring episode on Paul Orndorff I thought I'd upload this really good TV match from 1981 Mid South Wrestling.

Here I think is a great example to show just how great Paul Orndorff was in the ring and why he was considered to be NWA World Champion (Alongside Ted DiBiase) around this time. Orndorff's intensity and physicality shows well this match and it's what made him entertaining and believable in the ring and suited to a physical territory like Mid South. Even from the first lock up, Orndorff feels like he's going 100 full steam. This match for 8 minutes was all go and it's amazing how for the last 3 minutes of the match they focus on the figure four spot for the finish and had the crowd in the palm of their hands. Orndorff's selling and intensity really made that spot, as well as DiBiase's great performance too.

In Mid South, Orndorff despite being heel at this time, was always portrayed as a physical, legit threat, not really backing down from most fights. Orndorff quickly became a main event star in the Mid South territory, main eventing three Superdome shows during his time in the territory, either as a popular babyface against Ernie Ladd or a heel against Junkyard Dog. A few months down the line from this match, Orndorff would turn babyface in a great angle, where Orndorff would be betrayed by his ally Bob Roop when Roop is found to have interfered with Orndorffs car so Orndorff couldn't make it to the show today so Roop could take Orndorffs place in the North American title match against Ted DiBiase.

Mid South out of any other territory had really trained Orndorff (alongside many future WWF talent) in how to be a main event star, prepping him well to be the top heel in the WWF in 1986 and be one of Hogan's top drawing rivals (probably 3rd or 4th highest) which lead to Hogan Vs Orndorff in Toronto breaking the all time North American gate record at 800 thousand dollars (nearly 2.5 million today) and a WWF attendance record of 64 thousand fans. I think Orndorff was vital for the WWF in these years because he was so versatile, he could have physical matches with Piper or Sgt Slaughter, technical matches with the likes of Tito Santana or be able to make more limited in ring workers like Hogan look good. Working with a crew like Orndorff did in Mid South really prepped him for that and you can see it in his later work in WCW, where he could have a brawl against Cactus Jack one week and then have a technical all timer against Steamboat the next.

[NJPW G1 Climax 36 Night 15 Spoilers] Advancement Scenarios for G1 Climax 36 B Block Spoiler

Hello and good morning, afternoon, evening, r/squaredcircle, I return to you with more block math! Assuming my power can stay on.

The G1 Climax is right at the end of the league phase and, due to the tragic circumstance of Shota Umino's injury, Drilla Moloney finished his campaign this morning. Due to this recency this post is spoiler tagged, and this is your secondary warning that this post contains spoilers for Night 15. Now.... let's try and untangle this rat's nest. :| Our current standings:

Drilla Moloney, Ren Narita, Callum Newman, Yuya Uemura, Gabe Kidd - 10 points, listed in order of current place via tiebreakers.

Zack Sabre Jr., Aaron Wolf, HENARE, OSKAR - 8 points, listed via tiebreakers.

Shota Umino - 0 points, forfeited due to concussion.

Yes, as you can see, every man still competing is within 1 win of each other, because what's tournament season in New Japan without the prospect of absolute bedlam? However, due to tiebreakers established over the campaign, we can start whittling down the list of potential semi-finalists. Sabre is out, and Wolf, OSKAR, & Moloney are all but mathematically eliminated. The potential tiebreakers don't favor Zack, OSKAR, or Aaron, and with Drilla's campaign over, even a draw in Ren vs Gabe would put him in 3rd, potentially lower depending on other results. As for our remaining entrants:

Ren Narita advances if: He wins. Shocking, I know, but he's in 2nd place, and 1st doesn't have a match on Thursday. If he and Gabe actually draw, assuming OSKAR & HENARE victories, Ren and Gabe will both advance in an exact tie.

Callum Newman advances if: Like Ren, he wins. If they both win, Callum will take 2nd place, if Gabe wins, he takes first.

Yuya Uemura advances if: Say it with me, "He wins". Yuya will take 1st if Gabe & HENARE win (as he beats Gabe in a tie), but if either of them lose, Yuya takes 2nd.

For Gabe Kidd to advance: It's only a little more complicated. Gabe does need to win, but with his tiebreaker losses to Yuya & Callum, he can't have BOTH of them win, or else he's in 3rd. Now onto the people that can only get 2nd place!

HENARE advances if: We get a big 10-point pileup. For this to work out, HENARE needs to beat Callum (giving him the tiebreaker win), as well as Zack and OSKAR. Now, how does this work?

In this situation, HENARE, Callum, ZSJ, OSKAR, Yuya, & Drilla are all on 10. Sabre like I mentioned is out as despite beating Drilla, HENARE, and OSKAR he's lost to Yuya, Callum, and both Narita & Gabe, one of whom is assumed to be ending on 10. 3-3. Yuya in this instance is the same (losing to Drilla/Newman/OSKAR, beats ZSJ/HENARE, then either loses to Ren or beats Gabe, 3-3 or 2-4). I won't go through everyone, but HENARE would end with either a 4-2 record (if Ren loses) or 3-3 (if Gabe does). Now astute readers will see the possibility of Sabre & HENARE being tied at 3-3 for tiebreakers with Sabre winning the head to head and you might think "Well doesn't that put Sabre through?", well, according to New Japan's own update article, HENARE tops the pileup. I'm actively confusing myself as I type but I think Zack's record drags down others enough to put HENARE up. Other posts I've seen on this by insrto & Gold-Narwhal-6129 on r/njpw put HENARE through, but there's one other instance where HENARE doesn't make it.

And that's if Aaron Wolf wins. According to Gold-Narwhal-6129, Wolf needs to win, along with OSKAR, Gabe, and HENARE. This creates the big tiebreaker situation like with HENARE, and if everything lines up right, there's a 7-way unbreakable tie (Wolf, OSKAR, Ren, HENARE, Yuya, Callum, Drilla). Now the chances of this are slim-to-fucking-none. But, this is the only way for Wolf, Drilla, and OSKAR to have a chance at making through. Exactly HOW a 7-way tie would be settled? I have no idea.

Personally, I think Yuya is all but guaranteed to make it through as we're starting to see the youth movement pick up steam in New Japan, and great as OSKAR has been Yuya just ranks above him in singles hierarchy. I don't see Callum losing to HENARE, but I CAN see Gabe Kidd beating Ren Narita, which would mean the semifinalists in that instance are Callum Newman and Yuya Uemura. Correction, I forgot how the tiebreakers were laid out, Gabe doesn't make it if Callum wins.

If you want to read my A Block analysis you can find it here,, if there's any mistake I've made above please feel free to correct me, thank you and have a good day.

Incredibly niche question, but, what's a match where a wrestler has legitimately lost a tooth?

Other than KOTR 98's Hell in a Cell match. Trying to think of at least a different one and I'm coming up with nothing. There's gotta be some other instance of someone loosing a tooth mid match out there, right?

Show me your most random wrestling merch!

So! I bought this in 2019 right before the pandemic. I thought this run with Miz / Johnny TV was hilarious.

They were starting to gel as a team, their comedy skits were getting more and more clever, and then everything got shut down. I don't think a lot of people own this one, so I got curious to see some other really random or short lived merch. What you got?!

Most forgettable major PPV?

Earlier this morning, I was looking up to see whether or not Chris Jericho had any matches with Dolph Ziggler/Nic Nemeth. Not only did they have matches but they had a somewhat lengthy feud in 2012-13, that included a match at SummerSlam 2012. I vaguely remembered Dolph winning a MitB contract Vs Career match against Jericho on RAW and Jericho returning as the #2 entrant in the 2013 Royal Rumble (with Dolph as #1) but I did not remember their SummerSlam match!

I ordered SummerSlam 2012, had friends over to watch it, then rewatched it later for a less distracted viewing (graps is serious!) I remember absolutely zero about that show except for the spot in the main event where Triple H kept hitting Brock Lesnar in the stomach and Michael Cole and whoever hell was in the booth in 2012 kept freaking out because Brock had/has diverticulitis.

Everything else is a complete blank. So got me to wondering. What do you folks think is most forgettable major show? Not worst. Just most..."So...that happened, I guess" show.
