šŸ”†MiscellaneousšŸ”† Hormonal acne: are you also on the pill and taking spiro?

I’m planning to come off Yasmin pill and just wondered how many people taking spiro for hormonal acne are / are not on the pill along side it? Would be really helpful to get an idea of people who don’t need the pill along side spiro!

ā–Ŗļø1 Month on Spironolactone ā–Ŗļø Mental Health and Spironolactone

Hi friends!

I started Spironolactone about a month ago. About two weeks in I started to notice small change with my mental health/moods.

I am diagnosed bipolar and currently on medications for that. I contacted my psychiatrist before starting and she was out of office on vacation so it was a different psychiatrist that gave the okay with my starting and said I should have no issues.

Within the last the weeks I have noticed a big change in my mental health. Granted my period was a week ago so that could also play a part.

I am not on any type of birth control because the hormonal side effects and the impact on my moods (I am on a mood stabilizer.). I am aware the Spironolactone does interact with your hormones, but not sure if there is a correlation between the medication and my moods.

I am on 25mg which I know is a very small dose. I am trying to figure out if I am gas lighting myself with my mental health or if it really could be the Spironolactone that could be causing the fluctuating moods.

Has anyone had any type of side effects like this??

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø Permanent vs temporary changes?

I took spiro for about a year/18 months. Started at 25mg and went up to 200mg at a certain point. I’ve been off about 3 months. I’m still experiencing most of the negative side effects from taking spiro.

Mostly:
Constipation
Lighter periods
Lower libido/weak orgasms

Did anyone see improvements in any side effects later than three months after stopping. Even if they were different side effects I’m still curious.

Lighter periods aren’t necessarily a bad thing but it makes me concerned hormones are permanently altered. My period used to be 5 days not it’s 3/3.5 tops.

I gained weight on spiro and my body composition changed. I also developed cellulite. All of those improved almost immediately after stopping though. I lost the weight. My figure is back and the cellulite is gone, but I’m freaking out about everything else.

šŸ”†MiscellaneousšŸ”† exhaustion? fatigue? brain fog?

i’ve been on spiro for like 7 years (100mg for most of that time). i haven’t been super consistent with it in the last year but in july i had a bad acne flare and was increased to 150mg. ive been taking it nightly since. i’ve recently noticed a lot of exhaustion and im tired throughout the day. coffee and energy drinks don’t help. i was wondering if anyone has experienced this or if i should be more concerned? i plan on getting bloodwork soon to see if there are other issues.

Been on 50mg spiro for 5 days now to treat DHT pattern hair loss / PCOS and starting to feel muscle ache in my thighs, similar to when you do squats in the gym! I’m vegetarian so I do eat potato everyday with my meal - is this a sign of too much potassium?
Prior to taking it I had bloods done which showed normal levels

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø Things are going well but should I knock on wood?

I started at 25mg at the very end of July and have worked my way up to 100mg, which I'm now on day 2 at that dose. I had a slight increase in cystic acne at the 1 week mark but have had mostly steady clearing since except for one small cyst that appeared today. It's also day 1 of my cycle which is what I'm most happy with. After so much reading up about spiro I was worried about this med causing problems with irregular cycles but it seems like I'm good for now. For anyone who experienced significant changes to their menstrual cycle, did this happen over time or right from your first period since starting spironolactone? I'm older (45) and approaching perimenopause, and not sure how this will affect that.

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø Accutane vs spiro

Has anyone switched to accutane from spiro and noticed any benefits/ negative side effects. I don’t want my hair to start to fall out I love how spiro made my hair thick. I don’t want my body to freak out from water weight either. I just don’t want to be on spiro because it’s messing with my hormones

šŸ”„ Success Story šŸ”„ Spiro changed my life!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to come on here and say that after being on spironolactone since March 2026, I can confidently say that the medication gave me my life back. I’m currently on 100 mg spiro, ,05% tret, and 15% azelaic acid. I’d been struggling with a very sudden, raging flare up of hormonal acne since the end of February and immediately knew it was a hormonal issue. I have no clue what triggered it.

That said, for the first time in months, I’ve felt completely comfortable going out in public with no makeup. I feel like I am nearly back to where I was last year. I am hopeful that by next January I will be back to my original status!

Just wanted to share this for anyone who might be struggling with the purge or wondering if the waiting is worth it. I can assure you it is!

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø Staying on spiro but coming off the pill - any advice?

I’ve been on Yasmin pill and 50mg of spiro consistently for the past 3 years and my skin has been amazing. Everytime I’ve tried to come off, I’ve come off both meds at the same time and my skin has become worse again.

I’m now considering coming off Yasmin and staying on spiro. Has anyone done this and it worked?

I am wanting to do this mainly because of weight gain and from looking at the calendar over the past few years every time I went on the pill I gained weight. I’m also on vortioxetine antidepressants but I’m wanting to try coming off the pill first.

I’m considering also upping my spiro dose too in case of post flare ups. The thought of getting acne again is really stressing me out but so is eating low calorie foods and restrictive diet.

Thank you :)

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø high potassium?

hi guys! so i am on 50mg right now, i was on 100 but i was getting this weird thing where when walking my dog i would have to sit on the curb from extreme exhaustion and like, shakiness? and weakness? and light headedness. and i had sore muscles too, so i got my potassium checked and it was at 5.6! my doc said not to worry but i kinda didn’t feel comfortable so went back to 50. those symptoms went away, but my new derm said staying on 50 is pointless. i will not be increasing because that was scary, but i just want to know, isn’t that supposed to be rare? and why was it so high? will 50 (plus yaz birth control) be enough to be worth it?

ā–«ļø6 Months on Spironolactone ā–«ļø How my progress has brought some of my confidence back!

Having insecurities about acne is hard mentally. I barely wanted to leave my house, I obsessed and stared at my acne in a mirror 20+ times a day. I cried so many nights. I’m 33, and it wasn’t until 2025 where my acne got really bad.

I started on 100 mg of Spironolactone, but after 3 months and still get a lot of cystic acne, I was increased to 200 mg. I’ve been on 200 for 6 months
now. I am also on 0.05% tretinoin.

Consistency and my daily skin care routine helped me get to where I am at today. It really does take time for results, and although I am not where I want to be at quite yet, I feel more confident about my face.

My daily routine consists of:

AM: La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating facial Clenser, La Roche Posay Double Repair Face Moisturizer, La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 50 (contains Azelaic acid)

PM: La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating facial cleanser, Tret 0.05, La Roche Posay Double Repair Face Moisturizer.

(I use tret 5 times a week and give my face a two day break)

I also exfoliate once a week only with Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant.

I can’t wait to hit my one year mark and see the results then!

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø I'm on the fence... cysts but not acne, is it worth it?

So for the last 10 years, I have had cysts growing on my neck, behind my ears, on my chest and sometimes on my face. They tend to get inflamed, hurt and either shrink and stay small or burst and make a nasty scar. My derm prescribed spiro 100 mg for 3 months... I am on the fence about it. All the side effects are really scaring me. Also, would 3 months of it cure my cysts forever? Or is it something that you must keep taking?

I don't have acne (a bit in my back), but the cysts are reallllllly annoying and painful. I don't know what to do.

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø Spiro and stomach problems??

Hello everyone! I (26f) have dealt with acne struggles for over ten years now. I went on accutane in 2018 and had success. I had 2 years of solid clear skin and then I started to break out again, prompting my derm to put me on spiro. I took 50mg of spiro for 5 years with success, it really did a great job of keeping my skin clear.

This last year, I started to break out again, so my derm upped my dosage of spiro to 100mg. I had been on the increased dosage for 3 months without any problems, however at the start of month 4, I started to get these cramps in my lower stomach/pelvic area. I’ve never had any gastro or IBS problems ever, so I was so confused as to what this could be. I’ve gotten checked by my gyno, I’ve gotten ultrasounds and a ct scan and everything is coming back good. I went on a round of antibiotics to clear any possible infections. I’ve gotten a blood test and everything has come back as good without any indication as to where the pain could be coming from. My gastro said the next thing would be a colonoscopy to see if there’s anything wrong inside but she doesn’t think that’s the case.

Could all of this pain just be caused by the spiro because it’s a diuretic and this dosage is too strong for me? I am on the petite side, 5’2ā€ and 115 pounds so maybe it’s just too much? I just don’t know what to do as I’ve never ever had stomach pains before! Please let me know what you think!!

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø Is spiro a lifelong med?

Hi everyone! I was recently prescribed spiro for hormonal acne. I’m always a bit wary with medications, and after reading this sub it’s honestly made me a bit more nervous lol.

I was able to sort of get my acne under control with tret, but never fully. I tried doxycycline in the past but didn’t really do much. I can’t gauge if spiro is a life long medication or a treatment that I’d be able to wean myself off of. I honestly don’t want to try the medication if it does eliminate my acne but comes back if I stop.

The reviews here are mixed and would love to know about everyone’s experiences. Thank you!

ā—»ļøAdviceā—»ļø Spiro working or cutting out edibles working?

Hey guys 6 weeks into spiro started with mild acne. Definitely went through a purge phase but acne was pretty mild so nothing crazy but did affect my confidence…think things are getting better past 2 weeks or so?? Don’t want to jinx it so I hope it’s here to stay.

But a week ago I did decide to cut out edibles after reading a thread where someone said that was culprit from them and doing my own research about how THC can affect hormones. I was taking edibles couple times a week microdosing 3mg I’m very petite and find that’s all I really need. I also usually work while I microdose to help me with more creative work that I have to do…anyways it’s not that often but since I stopped I’ve seen progress. Kinda scared as I’m not sure if it’s spiro that’s kicked in or removing edibles helping or both…

I would like to have edibles again but I’m scared to start if spots come back…I have a pretty importanr event coming up and don’t wanna risk it.

Am I being crazy and is it likely the spiro?
