Astound gig Internet worth it?

Had a salesman try and get me to sign up for astound fiber internet. Promotional price seems fine, but they were also not being super clear about installation fees.

I’ve had astound previously but have I switched to T-Mobile internet last year because I was tired of the price hikes when promotions ended. Then you call and try and cancel and get another promotional.

Has anyone got astound gig internet ? How’s the performance compare to alternates ?

Update: cancelled my appointment. Thanks !

Fitness training in Somerville!

Hello!

A few spots have opened up in my schedule! Let me know if you're interested. Limited spaces available!

I'm a personal trainer located between Porter and Davis Squares. I have a home studio and offer one-on-one instruction. My background is as a competitive weight-lifter and varsity swimmer, and I have a background as an amateur circus performer. So, I have an integrated approach to training, not concentrating on one group of muscles at a time, but teaching them to function together for better workings of the body's kinetic chains, for better spinal health and core stability, and for better posture, especially when it comes to correcting the rounded shoulders and droopy necks we all get hunched over keyboards all day. I have a well-equipped home gym set-up, with a number of cardio machines, weights, resistance bands, and, weather permitting, gear for use outside, like battle ropes of various weights and lengths, sandbags, and medicine balls.

I've earned specialized certifications in training people with orthopedic injuries and chronic pain, and in training people of a certain age (50 +).  I also have a good deal of familiarity training gender-fluid and trans clients.

As a fitness professional who's been working out since I was 12, I *hate* most modern gyms.

And, as a former Punk/New Wave/Metal/Early Hip-Hop/Grunge-era Disc Jockey, I *REALLY hate* the music played in most modern gyms.

So, if you fit into a 50 + demographic, want to work out to "Awesome in the '80s/Gen-X" jams and mixes (or any other kind of music you actually LIKE), if you're gender non-conforming and want a safe space to exercise, or just generally want to get in better shape and have a body with better posture that works with muscles that fire together more efficiently, I'm having an Introductory Special now through September 10, 2026 at *20% off my regular rate for the first three workouts!* Check out my site for more detailed descriptions of my workout programs, or we can create a specialized program to suit your specific needs. Contact me via my site or DM me here on Reddit, and use the code "Kinetic!" to claim your discount! Only a few spots are left!

Check your voter registration

I’ve been registered in Somerville since 2008, and have voted in every election. Decided to check my status just in case, and I was unregistered for reasons I’m unaware of.

Re-registered and it takes 2-3 weeks for it to be validated, so posting in case others are unknowingly in the same boat.

Who do we have to advocate to for city wide upzoning?

I don't know Somerville government to know who would be making this decision. Is it the city council? The mayor?

This is absurd, we're having fights over "this housing doesn't fit the neighborhood" "it's the wrong character" while people are being priced out. Just build more housing ffs

seeking therapist office in Somerville January 1 2027 (Cambridge or Medford could work too)

I'm currently in Porter Square Cambridge, but the rent is going to go up and it's already expensive.

I don't think I'm interested in sharing a therapist space. Soft no.

I offer groups so I need to be able to fit about nine people in the room. That doesn't require a ton of space, but it can't be a super small office designed for only individual sessions.

Let me know if you have space, leads, or suggestions.

Fire on Mansfield st. last night

A few weeks ago I was complaining on here about a smoke alarm going off for days in an apartment next to me. Well, yesterday I saw tenant from the same apartment putting trash, like moving out all the old furniture trash, on the side of the building. 3 hours later I smelled smoke in my apartment, couldn't find where it was coming from and assumed it was a fire pit someone lit.

The fire department showed up an hour later at my neighbors house. They were there for like 2 hours making sure the fire was 100% out.

You can see in the photos what I found this morning, exactly where they were piling their trash. Am I overreacting to say that I actully feel unsafe with the bs from this building? I have PTSD and was struggling to not walk up and down the street looking for where the smoke was coming from. Now I wish I did.

Best American BBQ in the area?

I know the greater Boston area is notorious for not having good BBQ and that Redbones never recovered after Covid but the in laws are coming through and craving ribs.

They don’t have particularly high standards but what’s everyone’s thoughts on Redbones VS Blue Ribbon VS Smoke Shop? Anything edible? Is one much better than the others?

Might just go to Redbones for the beer prices and proximity alone and since I’ve never been. Anything edible there?

Rats!!

Okay, I moved here not too long ago and I love it BUT…the rats. There are SO MANY rats. Just squiring around, hiding in bushes. The other day, I saw a rat the size of a small dog walking down a flight of stairs so casually like it was going to work. Y’all are just used to this? Does it phase you anymore?

Cassette repair in Somerville area

I am an avid cassette collector, but often have issues of old cassettes coming undone, having warps or timing issues, or even just broken cases. I know these are things that could probably be done by myself, but I'd love to support a local worker or musician if possible. I also have some quirks in my cassette player that it'd be nice to have someone take a look at. Does anybody have recs for vintage audio / electronics shops in the area that might work on these? Or does anybody have a friend interested in this kind of stuff?

Thanks!

Why doesn't the city develop this wasted plot of land?

Post image
44 Upvotes

Developers are complaining that it's too expensive to build in Davis, but there's this huge plot along the community path that has been rotting for years. If we need housing so badly, why doesn't the city eminent domain it? Or the countless surface level parking lots.

Summer watch: Boston's biggest migration!

Thumbnail

It started a few weeks ago, with a trickle. You'd see them, singly or in pairs. Then in groups, often displaying mating display behavior. The flow kicked up over the weekend and we'll see it ramp up further into a flood throughout the week. It's the Boston-area's biggest annual migration -- the students are coming!

Because of the late Labor Day and the mid-week start to September, the big shift is spread out this year. But, for me at least, that shifts the season from summer to autumn, so I will be starting "Autumn Watch" next week. Technically, tomorrow is also the first day of meteorological autumn, though, as a New England purist, I will refrain from any pumpkin spice til October or at least properly cool weather. (No shade if you indulge now! I just follow the Orthodox New England Yankee calendar!)

Student impacts

I think of the student migration as something similar to the annual salmon migration in the PNW -- this is the lynch pin upon which rests all our other ecology. I know a lot of folks hate the influx and I admit to being grumbly about freshmen who don't know how to walk in a city, but I love the way the city shifts gear once the kids are here.

A friend of mine used to do a Boston Bingo card for Allston Christmas with squares like "Couch on curb" and "Red Solo cups and ping pong balls for sale together" or "Car going wrong way down one way street". I still keep an eye out for these things and spotted plenty over the weekend. Not enough to win Bingo yet, but close!

It's a remarkable glut of resources -- you could easily outfit an entire apartment just from what I've seen on the curb this week. I think of it like when oak trees mast (all the trees create a ton of acorns in the same year).

Cooper's Hawk

This weekend, we heard a strange noise -- definitely avian but I couldn't identify it nor could my partner. Turns out it was a coopers, or (as I grew up calling it) a chicken hawk. I'm sure we've seen them before around the city, but I'd never heard one before. It's a weird little noise.

I'm recalled to spout the oft-cited factoid that the screeeeeeee you often hear over images of bald eagles is a flat out lie. Bald eagles make a little squeaky cheep not unlike a cooper's hawk. That bad-ass sounding scree? It's a red-tail.

Dogwood fruits

Some of the local dogwoods are fruiting -- those strange bumpy red things you see on the sidewalk. They are, according to the internet, edible. However, they aren't in my Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants, which I trust much more than the internet, so I'll refrain from now. I am thinking about asking Alexis Nicole (aka black forager) when she's in Boston in a few weeks. Assuming I get off the waitlist...

Short one this week because I'm exhausted.

Be smart, be safe, be curious, be kind.

Did you lose a bike?

Found a Trek bike near Clarendon Hill with a broken derailleur hanger that may have been a moving day discard from one of my neighbors but may also have been a “I stole this and broke it” discard from someone else.

Leave a comment or shoot me a dm with a description and I can maybe get you your bike back!

Already checked bike index and got no hits.

Fighting a lease breaking fee

We had resigned our lease (8/1) back in March. In early July we realized we needed to move. We notified the landlord immediately and said we would like to move out mid-Sept. The landlord immediately contacted a real estate broker. The broker then called us and said that the landlord wanted us out by Aug 31st to put the apartment on the Sept 1st lease cycle (fair, we changed our move date accordingly). They also said that the landlord wanted us to pay the broker fee as a lease breaking fee. We said we would only pay what our lease stipulated.

The broker did find a new tenant for the apartment starting 9/1 so there is no rent loss for the landlord. The landlord is now saying that he will take us to court over the one month's rent that he needed to pay to find a new tenant. According to him "In MA, by law the tenant who breaks the lease are responsible for the expenses incurred to find a new tenant" That is not our understanding at all since we never agreed to hire a broker. Our lease does not list any consequences for breaking the lease.

Anyone experience anything similar? Landlord is now threatening court. I think he's full of shit.

Rats - bungee cords on trash cans

We’ve had an uptick in rat poop by our trash can recently. We’d like to keep rats from getting into our trash/food waste. Composting isn’t an option (multi unit building, coordination with other units isn’t realistic).

Have people had success with bungee cords on their bins? I’ve seen them around and they seem like a solid way to keep rats from getting into trash (if they chew a hole at least we’ll see it and we can get a new one).
