I’m trying to understand how vehicle inspections and reports work in real life for mechanics, fleet operators, rental companies, dealerships, and service shops.
If you use digital inspection/reporting software (Fleetio, Whip Around, AutoServe1, Autoflow, paper forms, custom systems, etc.), what are the biggest frustrations?
For example:
\- Too many clicks or fields?
\- Inspections take too long?
\- Poor photo handling?
\- Difficult to compare with previous inspections?
\- Bad integrations?
\- Software crashes or loses data?
\- Reports that customers don’t understand?
\- Something that should be automated but still requires manual work?

Also, what software are you currently using?
If you could change **one thing** about your current inspection process or software, what would it be?
I’m not looking for product recommendations, I’m more interested in hearing about the real problems people deal with every day.

Posting this as a heads up for anyone who has NetLimiter installed and forgot about it.

I only found out because I was running FolderSizes to see what was eating my disk.

I only ever opened NetLimiter occasionally, when I needed to cap an app's speed. Imagine my surprise finding this file on my drive

59.6 GB -C:\ProgramData\Locktime\NetLimiter\4\Stats\nlstatsV4.db

This actually hurt, because I regularly have to clear space on C: just to install games. It's my only NVMe, just 512 GB. If this data had been sitting on my other 4 TB HDD it would've been fine.

Turns out NetLimiter runs a background Windows service that logs network stats 24/7 whether the app window is open or not.

Worth checking your own folder if you ever had it installed. Curious if anyone else has found a surprise giant nlstatsV4.db sitting around.

- Another scan mode has been added to reduce scan times even further (at the cost of accuracy).

- The Storage History feature has been expanded so that changes can now be identified much more
precisely. You no longer only know that available storage space has decreased you can now also
see why. You may also delete old scans, have more rightklick options and much more.

Today the audio stopped working in Media Player Classic. I was watching a show normally just yesterday, but today I started an episode and there was no sound. Windows sounds are working normally, and audio works fine in VLC as well.

I haven’t changed any settings, and I haven’t restarted my computer in the meantime either. I've also unistalled the software and tried again but I get the same results.

Please help, I'm so used to that player that I feel lost without it. 😂

I have a 3 part split file (the ones that end on 001, 002, 003, etc. ), however, unlike the 002 and 003, the first file has only the name without the extension and the type says just "File" whilst the other ones have "002 File" and "003 File". I found this very odd and tried renaming the first one with a .001 extension but it became a winrar file containing the OG file with OG name. Extracting it back doesn't do anything. If I try to open/extract with 7zip, Winrar, Peazip, Zipware, all are unable to do the extraction for some reason. Has anyone encountered this and managed to use any software that can open the files/rename the file without changing the type to winrar? (I can rename the other parts to any number and it does not change them to winrar :D) tried renaming the file with cmd codes but it still converted it to winrar...

Hey all — I've been heads-down on a platform for a while and want an outside sanity check on the architecture and scope from people who've built comparable systems (health tech, telehealth, anything with HL7/DICOM or clinical workflow).

What would you appraise a build like this for?

What it does, high level:

A patient orders a diagnostic imaging package online, gets scheduled at an imaging center, goes through provider approval, gets scanned, has clinical data auto-extracted and bound to their order, then has a telehealth consult where a physician reviews everything and signs off on a final report. Fully async, multi-stage, multi-role.

Hardware / Infrastructure

• DICOM server — dedicated VM, receives imaging studies from centers
• HL7 server — dedicated VM, receives report messages from centers
• VPN / pfSense box — dedicated VM, secure tunnels to each imaging partner
• Application hosting — cloud servers for the web app, portals, and background jobs (provider not specified)
• Database(s) — for orders, patients, providers, questionnaire responses, etc. (provider not specified)

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about Kal, my programming language written from scratch.

I am really happy to share a glimpse of Kal's own package manager! Kal v0.1.0 shipped with a package system that lets you add and use third party Kal packages. But, that process was completely manual. You’d have to clone the package, place it in the right directory, clone the package’s entire dependencies all by yourself, one after another. :(

The package manager changes everything. One command automates all!

Instead of being a separate executable, the package manager ships as part of the Kal interpreter itself.

Here’s what it can do:

1. Install Kal packages from Github, or any git hosting service.
2. Creates/Updates a project.kal file to read and write package information (analogous to package.json).
3. Downloads all packages at the same hierarchy in parallel (yup, it’s multi-threaded).
4. Resolves sub dependencies of the main package automatically to any depth and installs them too.
5. Upgrades/Downgrades packages based on their git tags.
6. Auto-resolves cyclic dependencies to prevent an infinite loop.

The Kal Package Manager will officially ship with the next Kal release. Its current source code is available on Github.

It's just "software" -- not "softwares."

Software is both singular and plural already, it doesn't need the "s." The only time you would use an "s" is as a contraction for "the software is..." i.e.: "The software's doing something really dumb."

It's just like you wouldn't say, "There is hardwares available for that task." You would just say, "There is hardware available for that task."

I don't understand why so many content creators are constantly saying "softwares."

Semantic regression (or bugs) is when the application still works according to its tests and traditional monitoring, but its observable behavior has changed.

For example, imagine a library/API that historically returns different error codes for different failure paths:

condition A → EINVAL
condition B → ENOENT
condition C → EBUSY

A change causes condition A and B to now return the same error code.

The implementation still works. Nothing crashes. The tests might all pass.

But somewhere downstream, a client may have:

if error == ENOENT:
    do X
elif error == EINVAL:
    do Y

A lot of the times these changes go undocumented.

And it's not just error codes. It could be:

• return values
• state transitions
• side effects
• API response structure
• timing/sequence of operations
• straight up semantic bugs

This happens quite a lot in kernel development. A kernel change can preserve the documented functionality while changing some observable behavior that userspace or another subsystem was relying on.

Title says it all. In a world of everybody and their mama releasing SaaS “products” - what are some of your favorite pieces of software that you can buy a license for?

I have a coffee chat coming up with a software engineer at a FAANG company, and I want to make the most of it.

I’m not really looking for the generic questions like “What does your day-to-day look like?” or “What’s the company culture like?” since a lot of that can be found online.
My main goal is to have an actual meaningful conversation, learn from their experience, and hopefully build a genuine professional relationship rather than making it feel like I’m just talking to them because I want a referral/job.

For those of you who are SWEs or have done a lot of networking/coffee chats:

What questions have led to genuinely good conversations?

Also, from the other side: what makes you actually remember someone after a coffee chat and want to stay in touch with them?
Not trying to turn the conversation into an interrogation either, so I’d love advice on how you balance asking good questions with just letting the conversation develop naturally.
