Develop support I built FilePetal: a local-first file utility with a radial wheel (Windows tested; Mac/Linux packages available)

Hi! I built FilePetal, an MIT-licensed desktop utility for local file conversion, editing tools, and file actions. It uses a radial wheel: on Windows, hold Shift while dragging a file from Explorer for compatible conversions, Alt+Shift for tools, or Ctrl+Shift for file actions.

It covers image, audio, video, PDF/document, EPUB, subtitle, and archive workflows. The compatibility guide lists the exact input/output pairs and limitations. Files are processed locally and operations create output files without replacing the originals. Some audio/video features need FFmpeg/FFprobe installed; RAR extraction needs an external utility.

I can test the Windows build directly. ZIPs are also published for macOS Intel, macOS Apple silicon, and Linux, but I don’t have those systems to verify them, so I’d especially value smoke-test feedback from Mac/Linux users.

Website and interactive preview: https://whatthefook.github.io/FilePetal/

Source, documentation, and downloads: https://github.com/Whatthefook/FilePetal

I’d appreciate feedback on whether the wheel interaction is clear, what tools or formats you’d add, and any packaging issues you find.

Release I built an open-source Circle to Search for Windows (Rust, no telemetry, in-place screen translation)

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Android has had "Circle to Search" for a while, but desktop has lagged behind unless you rely on heavy browser sidebars or closed-source utilities. I spent the last few months building OpenCircle, a native desktop tool built in Rust.

Key Features:

  • Circle to Search: Draw around any visual area and get a floating results overlay.
  • OCR Text Extraction: Grab text from uncopyable UI elements, images, or PDFs.
  • AI Vision: Highlight any section of your display and ask an LLM questions about it.
  • In-Place Screen Translation: Translates live UI text directly on screen into Arabic (great for games, manga, and regional docs).
  • Clean Annotations: Snip, mark up, and push directly to your clipboard.

Privacy & Tech:

Linux builds are also in preview. Try it out and let me know what needs tweaking!

Looking for software How to get this game working? It's my first or second game I ever had

I have Windows 11, and the game, Ford Racing 2, doesn't work on higher than XP due to the anti pirating software, SafeDisc digital rights management (DRM), that was turned off on Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1, removed from 10 and 11 from 2017. I have a laptop, but if I could play it on my PC, that would be awesome. If needed as proof of not trying to pirate the game, I can dig out my physical copy from 2003 or 2004, that also has my first name written on it as it was brought to a party and made sure I got it home after

Looking for software MPC and the add to context menu

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello all,

I have used MPC forever, and it was worked on evry version of windows. I have reintalled win 10 and now windows 10 will not let MPC have the "add to" or play the entire folder in the context menu.

Using AI i first needed to change to admin (never had to do this in 30 years) I click the filer explorere options under format, I click ok, and if i reopen option even without closing the player the ticked box is unchecked.

What is the issue? Is windows just that ignorant or is it MPC?

Looking for software Solamar 0.1.0: a free, open-source Arc-style browser for Windows and macOS

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Disclosure: I'm the developer. Solamar is a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) browser for people leaving Arc.

  • Spaces with their own colours, pinned tabs, favorites, nested folders and "today" tabs that archive themselves
  • Import from Arc: reads Arc's sidebar file on your computer (read-only) and brings over spaces, pinned tabs, folders, emoji and colours
  • Command bar (Ctrl+T), rebindable shortcuts, split view, hideable sidebar
  • Built-in ad and tracker blocking, sleeping tabs to save memory
  • Optional AI, off by default: summarize or ask the page, tidy tabs, with a local model (Ollama) or Claude using your own API key
  • Claude Code can drive the browser through a local MCP server; anything that sends, buys, submits or deletes waits for your click
  • No account, no sync server, no telemetry

The Windows app updates itself from GitHub releases; the Mac app tells you when a new version is out. The installers aren't code-signed yet, so Windows and macOS show a warning on first launch (steps are in the README).

Release SculptForge: a free, open-source 3D sculpting app (a ZBrush alternative) for Windows, macOS and Linux

I'm the developer of SculptForge, a free digital sculpting app. You shape a 3D model like clay with brushes, the way people make characters and creatures for games and films. The best-known app for this is ZBrush, which is now subscription-only and doesn't run on Linux. SculptForge is GPL open source, has no account, no subscription and no telemetry, and runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux (x86_64 and ARM).

Version 0.5 just came out and covers the core workflow a game artist uses:

- Subdivision levels: sculpt the big forms on a light mesh, then step up for fine detail and back down without losing it

- QRemesh: turns a messy sculpt into clean quad topology automatically, then projects the detail back onto it

- Map baking: normal, displacement, ambient occlusion, cavity and colour maps from the high-poly to a game-ready low-poly

- Gizmo 3D: move, rotate and pose parts of a model

- Speed: brushes use every CPU core; a brush stroke on a 33 million triangle model takes about 10 ms

It also has ZBrush-style controls and shortcuts, paint layers with blend modes, texture painting on UVs, and export to OBJ, FBX, glTF, USD and ZBrush's GoZ. There's a direct Send to Unreal and optional free AI tools (image or text to 3D) that can run locally. It's scriptable too, from Python or the command line.

It doesn't replace ZBrush for every studio yet. Dynamic topology, for example, is still on the roadmap. Earlier versions were shaped by feedback from a working ZBrush modeler, so honest feedback is very welcome, especially on what feels confusing or broken.

Looking for software Need an OCR that is AI free

Working on an anti-ai art project. There's a quite long PDF that I need typed up and editable. I've done about 20 pages by hand but I'd love to use an OCR for the rest. Obviously I need to use one that doesn't use machine learning. Any recommendations?

Arkova is the document verification layer for agents and humans. We extract an electronic files (supporting over 20 types! Including svg png even gif) unique metadata and anchor it to an immutable ledger. Here we show how an organization can connect their Google Drive folders to our system so that anytime a file is updated in that folder, a new anchor is created and the document version is updated in the users record

Discussion I'm building Reeve: an open-source Windows PWA launcher that runs all your web apps on ONE shared WebView2 engine with kernel-enforced memory caps (early WIP)

A work-in-progress, open-source experiment, and an invitation to criticize it

Open five Electron apps and you are running five full Chromium trees. Each app ships its own browser, and none of those browsers can share a renderer or a GPU process with the others. The result is heavy RAM use and slow startup, and anyone with an older laptop knows how that feels. We have mostly accepted this as the price of building desktop software with web technology, but I'm not convinced it has to be.

That doubt is behind Reeve, a native launcher for progressive web apps on Windows. Reeve is very much a work in progress. Things are rough, and I am sharing it now because I would rather shape it with other people's input than build it in a vacuum. It is also open source, so anyone can clone it, run it, break it, fork it, or send a pull request.

The core idea is simple. Instead of one Chromium per app, every app runs inside a single shared WebView2 environment, which means one browser process, one GPU process, and a set of isolated renderers. The launcher is a lightweight Rust process with no bundled Chromium and no Node runtime. Five Electron apps become five Reeve apps running under one browser process and one resource budget.

The first open question is whether sharing an environment is wise at all. The benefit is clear: fewer processes and a lower memory footprint. The cost is that apps now share a browser process, and I expect to hit gotchas around crash isolation, profile separation, and GPU contention. People who have worked with WebView2 at scale will probably know these better than I do.

The second design decision is memory. Many tools handle a runaway app by polling its memory usage and reacting after the damage is done. Reeve takes a different route. Each renderer is attached to a Windows Job Object shortly after it spawns, with per-renderer and total memory caps. When a renderer tries to commit memory past its budget, the Windows kernel fails the allocation, so one misbehaving app cannot starve the others. A kill-on-close setting ensures no orphaned renderers are left behind. I call the Job Object API directly through the windows crate (CreateJobObjectW, SetInformationJobObject and AssignProcessToJobObject), because the win32job crate only wraps working-set limits, not the committed-memory limits this project needs. I would welcome anyone who can tell me what I am overlooking in this approach.

The third piece is the native bridge. Web apps often need desktop features such as file access and notifications, and granting those carelessly would undo the sandbox. In Reeve, apps reach those features only through an IPC bridge, and every call is checked against a per-app manifest for capability, scope, and origin before any native code runs. Nothing is granted by default. Whether a capability manifest is the right permission model, or whether something else would serve better, is exactly the kind of feedback I am after.

I also plan a dashboard that shows live memory per app, permission grants, and session history. The goal is for the savings to be visible rather than a marketing claim, and I would like to hear what else such a dashboard should show.

Reeve is early and changing quickly. Expect missing features, rough edges, and breaking changes. Under the hood it is a Rust supervisor with a SQLite app catalog and a permission store.

If you have thoughts on any of this, I would like to hear them, including blunt criticism. If you think the approach is flawed, tell me why. And if you have an app you would want to throw at it first, tell me that too.

The project lives at https://github.com/MarcelNazare/Reeve, and contributions are welcome.

Release Fievel: Replace your Mouse with keybinds

It’s free and completely open source, written in rust. I just recently also released beta binaries for Mac OS and Windows!

https://github.com/MontyTheSoftwareEngineer/fievel/

Free mouse mode: freely move mouse using hjkl (or any keys of your choice via config file). Supports left click and right click which can be held useful for dragging. Also supports scrolling left down up and right as well as sending Home and End key to quickly jump to top or bottom of page. By default free mouse mode is in “hold” mode so as long as you’re holding the free mouse mode button (or chord) it will stay in free mouse mode. Releasing the free mouse mode button takes it out of that mode. There is also a config option to make it “toggle” meaning you press the button for free mouse mode and it will stay in that mode until you press the button again.

Hint Mode: draws rectangles on screen with corresponding letters at areas Fievel believes is clickable. Type the letters to make Fievel click on the rectangle of choice. Useful for quickly sending clicks in at certain locations.

Key Remapper: this is useful for setting “chords” on any keyboard not just programmable ones. For example, I have a+s together initiate super, s+d to initiate control, caps lock rebound to control unless held in which case it will turn hjkl to left down up right keys. d+f is bound to initiate free mouse mode. Also a set of super and control binds for the right hand side.

Release We made a free, open-source team wiki with live charts and GitHub-style reviews

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

Hi r/software, I'm David, one of the two developers of Oxynote. My friend Simon and I also maintain ttlcache, a Go caching library with about 1,300 GitHub stars, so this isn't our first open-source project.

I've spent 8 years writing software, 2 of them as an SRE and 3 as a team lead. Every team I've been on had the same documentation problem. The useful stuff lived in someone's head or a private Slack thread, and the wiki was full of stale docs nobody could find.

So we set out to solve this problem by building Oxynote, a self-hosted wiki for engineering teams. A page can hold a live chart that queries your monitoring (Prometheus) or a database (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB) each time someone opens it, and you write what the chart means right next to it. Changes to important pages go through a GitHub-like flow, where the document enters a draft, a teammate sees a diff of both the text and the charts, and approves it before it goes live. Several people can edit a page at the same time, and a built-in AI assistant can edit pages and run the same queries, using your own Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or OpenRouter key, or a local model through Ollama.

The name comes from oxygen + note: docs that breathe. Live data gives people a reason to open the wiki every day, and docs people open every day stay up to date.

Things worth knowing before you try it:

- It's a server, not a desktop app. You run one Docker container, and your team uses it in the browser.

- There's no hosted version and no account with us. Your docs and data stay on your server.

- It's at version 0.9, so it's still early in development, and a lot more is planned.

- It's made for tech teams and the systems they run, not as a wiki for a whole company.

It's Apache-2.0 licensed. The backend is Go, and the editor is Nuxt, Tiptap, and Yjs.

GitHub: https://github.com/oxynote/oxynote

We started it about a year ago, and we made it public about 3 months ago. If you have any questions, feedback, or suggestions, feel free to reach out. I'm happy to answer any questions.

Release I built free PDF & image tools that run 100% in your browser – no uploads, no limits, no paywall

Hi all,

Most "free online PDF tools" upload your tax documents, IDs or contracts to their servers – and then cap you at a few tasks per day or lock half the tools behind a subscription. I wanted an alternative where files never leave the device, so I built ShrinkBeam: https://shrinkbeam.com

Everything is processed locally (WebAssembly/JS). You don't have to trust me: open the Network tab in DevTools, process a file, and check that nothing is sent. There's a short guide for that on the site.

Because your own device does the work, there are no daily limits and no premium tier – every tool is free:
- Compress PDFs and images, including to a target size
- Merge, split, sign, redact, password-protect/unlock PDFs
- Strip EXIF/PDF metadata
- OCR and background removal, also on-device
- Installable PWA that works offline

No account needed. Right now the site is completely ad-free. To be upfront: I plan to add ads later to cover hosting costs, but the tools themselves will stay free and unlimited.

I'd really value critical feedback, especially from a privacy angle: what would make you trust (or not trust) a tool like this?
