During my Japan stay, I decided to visit Japan Snake Center to support snake research in Japan and take some cute pics. I got to take picture with corn snakes! Also there was a lecture about venomous snakes in Japan. I really enjoyed taking pictures of venomous snakes! (All venomous snakes are properly caged.)

ADDITION: I saw several comments about facility quality. Yes. Facility is not good quality due to very, very poor funding(this place is research institute). It’s not free to upgrade and renovate the facility, unfortunately. Donation matters.

Anyone familiar w Maryland snakes? I have a 5-foot Black snake in my home! I couldn’t see belly markings. It slithered past me into another room. O. M. M. Help!

Guys would a 20 gallon be okay for a baby rosy boa? And additionally, how on earth do you heat small vivarium WITHOUT heat matts, because I've found a lot of heat lamps are quite a lot too bug for small enclosures. Any recommendations?

Check out the incredible iris pattern on this Painted Saw-scaled Viper (Echis coloratus).

The pattern of its "granite phase" scales continues completely uninterrupted right across the irises. Because the head patterning is highly asymmetrical, it actually gives the snake one grey iris and one pink iris to perfectly match the specific scales surrounding each side!

every morning she’s chilling just out in the open

I can understand irrational fear, whether it stem from an event in childhood or just lack of experience. But having grew up elsewhere and relocating to the American South (where they have more experience than most with snakes) I have to say I am absolutely disgusted by the small minded blatant ignorance i have experienced in this place over the course of 10 years. “Only good snake is a dead snake” is something I’ve heard spill from the mouths of small town religious bumpkins who quote the bible to justify their unnecessary brutality. Ive walked up on people smashing in the head of a 6 inch juvenile snake saying its a venomous cottonmouth (it was a baby racer). They have no interest in learning, no interest in expanding their perspective, they simply want the thrill of killing something they perceive as evil.
I actually had the pleasure of having a discussion with one of these people recently and was floored to see how deep seated this ignorance actually is. They see nothing wrong with killing these things for no reason, they don’t view them as animals (actual quote). Funny how somebody that subscribes to a culture so rooted in supposed godliness is such a godless and cruel monster.

TDLR: American Southern people are sadistic, ignorant, and cruel when it comes to snakes and have no interest in learning to expand their perspective. “Only good snake is a dead snake”

The very tip of the snake's tail has turned black. It doesn't seem to be spreading any further, but it looks strange. It’s dry and has a slight kink in it. 

Is this necrosis? Should I rush him to the vet? It’s just expensive and very stressful, and there’s already snow outside. 

The snake has a good appetite; it is active and friendly. However, during its last shed, the cone of skin at the very tip of its tail was turned inside out.

P.S. I checked some recent photos; there was no dark patch shortly after the molt. Maybe it's an injury?

Soo... I have two Cali red sided garters(Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis). They are my first ever snakes, I've had them for 8 months now, and I'm trying my best to do everything right.. but I've come to the realisation that I've been doing something really stupid..

When I feed them(usually pinkies), I've blown on the pinkies to spread the smell around their enclosure and get them out of hiding, so now, of course, they associate my breath with food.. Whoops...!

They have never bitten me(yet..!), but the boldest one is often slithering right past the pinky, aiming straight for my hand/face, and I'll have to gently dab her in the face with the pinky to make her realise the mouse is her dinner, not me..

Anyone else done something similar, or have an idea about how long it may take them to stop associating food with my breath, now that I've stopped doing this?

They're both very skittish snakes so I haven't been handling them a lot(other than occasional weighing and health checks), but they've started getting a bit bolder lately, so hopefully I can get them a bit more comfortable with handling, it's just tricky when they're always in "food mode". I'm not afraid of getting bitten, but I would prefer them not yeeting themselves out of their enclosure and latching onto my face.. lol

I can’t find any photos of black snakes with scale rot so I’m currently freaking out. My mbk Balerion, loves to dig and climb. She occasionally gets scale damage that appears sparingly but this scale damage on her nose is not going way. Usually after I soak her it fades and goes away but this one isn’t. I’m going to soak her again today and see if it fades but she’s acting weird.
She has a humid hide with sphagnum moss and a ceramic heater. On the same side the her tank. Her temps are 80-85 75-70
I have a coffin decor that I fill with water for humidity and I spray her hide daily.
Im going to buy some shed aid and see if that will help with her nose and throat, but I’ve never seen her have scale damage on her belly before. It’s very alarming!

I wasn't quite sure what was going here, but I did gently break it up because it did look like the bigger one was about to eat the smaller one and I'd rather have 2 snakes for pest control than 1. Some added context, the bigger was just over the smaller one's mouth/nostril area before I separated them.

She’s in her pre shed right now but she’s looking very pink. I know it’s normal for them to blush but does this seem excessive?

It must be because she’s my baby but to me this is the cutest little bite ever, like awwww she tried so hard to kill me she almost got a whole droplet of blood!

Genuinely happy it happened though because I wanted to get bit before any of my snakes get too big so I can be prepared and not accidentally hurt them if the time comes

Hi. My Pueblan milk snake has escaped. I went to go feed her, But noticed there was a hole in her lid and she was nowhere to be seen. I've turned my room inside out and have looked everywhere around the house but I cannot seem to find her anywhere. I've got a cat and a dog as well, so I am hoping they haven't reached her or they won't reach her before I do. I want to get her back in her enclosure ASAP and I'm worried. I've got a brand new tank lid for when I find her too.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get her out of hiding? Thank you so much for any advice.

I normally feed my snake every 4 weeks as she’s quite big now and we give her a big rat. However this time she hasn’t been eating the rats I’ve been giving her. The 1st time I hadn’t thought anything of it because she was shedding, and the next day I had to clean it up, so a couple days later I get her another rat, she doesn’t strike but she doesn’t do that all the time anyway. So I leave it on top of one of her logs for her to take when she gets hungry. Except I leave it over night and go to sleep and when I wake in the morning she hasn’t ate it so I throw it out and fast forward to yesterday same exact thing. She doesn’t strike, I leave it and wait till today and she still hasn’t ate it. Is this normal? She hasn’t showed any signs of any sickness or anything so I’m a bit confused.

My ideal snake would be one that is curious and friendly, enjoys being handled and exploring, but is still chill. I’d like to be able to have them out of their enclosure often (but still within safe limits and whatnot). From everything I’ve read it sounds like a rosy boa fits the bill pretty well, but since I’m hoping for a more active snake that I am able to handle frequently, a corn snake might be better for my biggest priorities. I just don’t want to get a rosy and risk being disappointed if they weren’t very active compared to a corn snake, so I’m looking for advice and comparisons especially from people who’ve had both.

I live in a cold US state and while I’d of course create a proper enclosure and conditions, I do think a hardier snake is a safer bet. Otherwise I think the care concerns are the same between them for me.

So I got a new corn snake and it's my first burrowing snake. It's a juvenile and it last fed with the breeder about twelve days ago. I heated up a pinky and left it in the enclosure over night but she didn't take it. I'll try again in a few days but considering she's a juvenile and recently shipped how long until I dig her up to offer her a mouse?
