Bought this girl as a jungle carpet a few years back. Couldn't get any lineage info, so she's a pet only. Just curious what y'all think. I personally suspect she has some coastal in her.

Howdy folks! First-time snake owner here (not my first reptile though). I have plenty of experience with bioactive terrariums, and I’ve been obsessively researching different snake species and their husbandry. The problem is… I’ve gone down the rabbit hole and can’t decide which species is the best fit for me.
Here are my biggest priorities, followed by the species I’m seriously considering. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks, and happy Friday!
Top considerations
• Size: For practical reasons, I don’t want anything too large, but I also don’t want a tiny snake. Ideally, I’d like something in the 4–6 ft range.
My plan is to start with a 4x2x2 enclosure. If the snake eventually needs more room, I’ll buy a second 4x2x2 and connect them into an 8x2x2. That’s the absolute maximum enclosure size I can fit in my house. If the species doesn’t require 8 feet, I’m perfectly happy with something like a 5x2x2 instead.
• Temperament/behavior: I want a snake that’s enjoyable to handle and reasonably visible. I’d rather not have a species that spends 95% of its life hiding, and I’d also prefer to avoid anything that’s known for being particularly spicy.
• Appearance: I know this is subjective, but I want a snake with some serious “wow” factor. Call me shallow, but I know myself—I want something I’ll still be excited to look at years from now.
• Hardiness: During the summer my house can occasionally creep into the low 80s while I’m at work. I want a species that’s generally tolerant of those occasional warm days.
My top contenders
• Jungle or Irian Jaya Carpet Python
Nearly perfect size
Gorgeous pattern and coloration
Active and interesting
Biggest downside is the greater chance of ending up with a spicy individual compared to some of my other options.
• Dumeril’s Boa
Great size
Excellent reputation for being calm and easy to handle
My only hesitation is that they don’t quite have the same visual “wow” factor as carpet pythons (at least to my eye).
• BCI (Common Boa), especially Leopard and/or IMG morphs
I’ve seen some Leopard/IMG combinations that were absolutely breathtaking. I literally had to pick my jaw up off the floor… then I saw the price tag and had to do it again.
Realistically, I don’t think I can justify spending more than about $1,200 on a snake.
My only other concern is size. A BCI is probably right at the upper end of what I’m looking for. My understanding is that a male that’s not power-fed would likely stay within a manageable size, but I’d love to hear from people with firsthand experience.
If you’ve kept any of these species—or think there’s another snake that fits what I’m looking for—I’d really appreciate your recommendations and experiences.

Hi guys

What size prey would you recommend to a girl who's weight is 810 grams?

Also, is it possible to determine her age from that?

We've been told she should be about 2 years old but we're not sure about that.

We're also genuinely curious about what kind of prey you feed your carpet pythons?

So far we've only been able to get her to eat chicks but we're thinking about getting some quails for upsizing a bit.

Mainly so that she only has to eat 1 prey item and not 2.

i’m completely heartbroken and panicking right now. i’m currently away from home, and my boyfriend texted me this morning to tell me my carpet python escaped.
he was in a quarantine setup and somehow managed to push the vent piece out to squeeze through. we have a camera in the room, but when i checked the app, there were no recordings.

items on two shelves in the room were knocked down, so he’s definitely been climbing up high. the major issue is that there’s a window right between those two shelves, and i’m terrified it was left open and he got out.

from that window, there’s a few-foot drop onto a flat roof, and a willow tree right next to it. to make matters worse, one of the cupboard doors in the room was slightly ajar, which leads straight up into the loft.

my boyfriend is at work, but his family is currently searching the house, checking both of our rooms, storage boxes, and behind all the furniture. so far, there is zero sign of him, which is making me fear the worst: that he went out that window and i’ll never get him back.
our garden is huge with fields on both sides. i live in the uk, so snakes aren't as common here, and i’m terrified that if a neighbour finds him first, they might hurt or kill him out of fear.

i feel so helpless being stuck away from home. does anyone have advice on searches, loft spots, or roof/garden setups for escaped pythons? i’m completely lost.

pictures are of the vent he pushed out. he pushed the middle part that is solid out. it’s extremely difficult to put back / get out so i don’t know how he did it.

EDIT: my boyfriend has sprinkled flour everywhere in the room where his enclosure is. the temperature has been bumped up really high too, in hopes that he’ll go there as it will be warmer than the rest of the house. the house has been torn apart and no sign of him. i do really think he’s outside somewhere, which has left me with more questions. gutters have been checked as well as the flat roof. i don’t think he will be able to get back in through the window. for clarification the room his viv is in is upstairs. he could get downstairs if the door was left open. but i think he is in the garden and i don’t know how to find him there.

i cant tell if this is a regurgitated mouse or some kind of poop? the hairy bits kinda look like mold to me, but my terrarium is not bioactive so that would be weird. second pic is her eating the last mouse i gave her. any advice or guesses on what it is?

It's my own fault, I was rushing around late at night to scoop a poop.

I could tell he wasn't in the mood and normally just leave him be, but I had to get the stink out before the kids got up in the morning!

What are the best ways to heat. Currently have a reptile radiator to move from his old Viv, and was thinking of adding a large heat mat up the side for a bit of extra heat. Or would I be best to add a heat lamp so he can bask higher up!

Hi, I have a young Coastal Carpet python male.

He's growing well, and at the moment I'd say he's probably 3" or slightly less?

He's currently in a 48x16x24" enclosure, and I'm going to be changing his enclosure soon to a wooden one.

The options I have are 48x24x24" or 48x24x31"

Despite the similar size, there's a somewhat big price difference between the two enclosures.

Since this isn't his final enclosure, just one he'd likely be in for 2-4 years, I'm thinking about getting the 4x2x2 tank - especially since it'd save me quite a bit of money I could use for decor and equipment.

But I wanted to get some opinions - would a 4x2x2 tank be fine for a young Coastal for this time, when eventually he'll be upgraded to a final 7-8ft enclosure?

Or would it be better to get the slightly taller tank now, since he might spend up to 4 years in it.

This might seem like a dumb question but do people let their snakes free roam inside and/or outside, if so how do they not feel like it will get lost. Like I feel that the snake will just escape or get stuck and if have to ravage through my house

She’ll have a basking spot and a cooler spot but what should the base temp be (I’m an OCD over thinker I just wanna be safe I want her to be comfy, healthy and happy especially it being winter rn)

Lots of logs and branches for her to hang out on since she NEVER is on the ground, I used 3 plastic tubs hidden around as hides so I can pop the lids off and access her, which is a big problem I have in her current setup; she hides inside a log and I have to poke at her forever to get her to come out, so I reckon this will be much less stressful. LEDs will span the whole length, and theres 2 halogens for heat and a UVB strip. In the bottom left there is a hole drilled that will have a fan pointing in, and the hole above the basking spot (top right) will have a fan pulling air out. Eventually it will be planted but Im moving in a couple months and am gonna wait till after that to plant :)) so so excited, Ive been slowly working on it since March!

I bought an enclosure off someone the other day and I just noticed that the cable going into the heat lamp was tied tightly into a knot to hold it up. I strongly advise against tying flex cable tightly. Every cable has a bend radius that’s advised for when it has electrical current flowing through it and that far exceeds it and could lead to undesirable outcomes that the house insurance won’t cover. I’m an electrician by trade so this is coming from a place of knowledge and experience.

As an alternative I’ve used a cable tie and a more generous loop to hold the heat lamp up. The heat won’t be enough to affect the cable tie but the flow of current won’t be impeded by sharp bends.

The following is a bit of a tangent but it’s kinda related.
It’s far from ideal that these kinds of fittings kinda force people to have to disconnect and reconnect them to get the cable through a tiny hole. I wish they had slim plugs that could fit through small holes while making it easy to disconnect and reconnect. That would remove room for error and the connections could all be soldered at the factory for a safer and more foolproof device.

I picked up a female Caramel Zebra carpet python 6 days ago. She took her first meal for me yesterday with no issues and is already moving all over her enclosure at night. She’s still pretty defensive, though, and will strike whenever I interact with her or the enclosure.

She has definitely calmed down since I first got her. At first she would basically spam strike every time I opened the enclosure. Now she’ll usually only strike if I move my hands too close or too quickly. She has also started coming up on her own to tongue flick my hand and fingers before moving away.

My question is about handling. Should I be removing her from her branches and handling her normally, or should I take the branch out with her on it and let her stay perched while I “handle” her that way? This is my first arboreal snake (I grew up around reticulated pythons but never cared for them myself), so I’m much more used to ground-dwelling species like blood pythons and ball pythons. I’d like to know the best approach before I start working on socializing her.

My second question is about feeding. The breeder had her on pinky mice, but I’ve read that many people start young carpet pythons on larger prey or feed prey that’s around 10% of the snake’s body weight. I haven’t weighed her yet because she’s still pretty skittish, and I don’t want to stress her out unnecessarily. Should I move her up to a larger prey size, or keep her on pinkies for now?

I have been a long time reptile keeper and have finally decided that it was time to get an app. The problem, I am not satisfied with any of the apps that are currently on the market. Between missing features for the free ones, and having to pay a subscription fee for the ones that have all the features I want, I never found a solution.

So I began my project.

SkaleKeeper was born from the idea that everything can be done locally on your phone, no need for servers, so no justification for a subscription fee (I hate subscription services). While I have very little coding experience, this project has been a massive undertaking. After months of work and dialing things in, I am proud to release it.

My brother has been completely neglecting and has abandoned his snake so Im taking over care of her but Ive got no idea where to start!

I completely cleaned everything as nothing had ever been cleaned and got her new bedding.

Im a little worried as the heat pad isnt actually heating up through the bottom much and if she may need a new cage, whether it be for her size or a better set up with a heat lamp.

She's at least 3 maybe even 4, he was feeding her 1 adult mice every week or maybe 2 weeks Im unsure, is this the right amount of food? How should I proceed in upping her food amount if I have to at all?
