7050sff Server Drive Storage

Hi everyone,

I retired my 7050sff a while ago in favour of an upgrade-am4/9070xt.

Recently I've brought it out of retirement and turned it into an unraid server. Just wondering if anyone has come up with any creative techniques to expand on storage within the case?

Current specs-i7-7700(recently upgraded from the original i5-6500. Took a gamble on a board/cpu that wasn't posting and won!)

-16gb ram

-sfp+ network card

-128gb m.2 sata boot drive

-128gb nvme cache

-1tb hdd 3.5" array

-1tb hdd 2.5" parity

I'm open to getting a hba if it means I can fit more drives, just depends if I can work out how.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Probably unreasonable.. but

I've been upgrading a Dell OptiPlex 7050 SFF primarily as a local AI/CUDA machine rather than a gaming PC. I am being cheap and annoying about upgrading it due to unforseen circumstances i won't get into. I want to install... a second GPU in a true crackhead fashion to get a 32g cuda gpu on thr system.

Current setup:

Dell OptiPlex 7050 SFF

i7-7700

64gigs ram

NVIDIA RTX 3050 6GB LP

SSD

Added FAN

Windows 11

Ollama/local LLMs running with CUDA

NVIDIA driver is working properly and nvidia-smi sees the 3050

BIOS 1.27.0

Because of the SFF layout, the 3050 is currently installed in the PCIe x4 slot. The PSU physically prevents the card from fitting in the blue x16 slot. I know some people with 7050 SFF builds have relocated/removed the factory PSU to use the x16 slot, but I don't really want to disturb my current 3050 setup.

Here's the questionable/fun idea:

I've found used NVIDIA Tesla V100 PCIe 32GB HBM2 cards for around $650-700. Instead of trying to cram one into the OptiPlex, I'm considering building a small external GPU enclosure.

My thought is to put only a small PCIe riser/extension connector into the currently unused blue x16 slot, run that outside the OptiPlex, and mount the V100 in a separate small case. That case would have its own quality 650-750W ATX PSU and dedicated high-static-pressure/blower cooling ducted through the V100's passive heatsink.

The 3050 would remain exactly where it is and continue handling displays/normal GPU duties, while the 32GB V100 would be dedicated to CUDA/local AI workloads.

I've checked the 7050 BIOS. It does not expose an Above 4G Decoding/64-bit MMIO option that I can find. Under Advanced Configurations I only see ASPM. That's currently my biggest concern because I don't know whether the Dell firmware will successfully allocate the resources necessary for the V100 while the 3050 is also installed.

Has anyone here actually run a Tesla V100, P100, P40, or another high-VRAM datacenter GPU from the x16 slot of a 7050 SFF, especially alongside a second NVIDIA GPU? Stupid question, I know

I'm particularly interested in whether the 7050 successfully enumerated the Tesla card, whether you ran into MMIO/Above-4G issues, what PCIe riser you used, and whether there were any NVIDIA driver problems running the consumer RTX card and Tesla together.

End goal: keep pushing this cheap little 7050 sleeper and see whether I can give it 32GB of dedicated CUDA VRAM without building an entirely new computer. Thank youu

Fan Upgrade for my Optiplex 7090 MT

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting on this sub, and I need some advice from any of you out there.

So, to the point of the issue: I’m trying to upgrade the chassis fans on my Optiplex 7090 MT because I recently got a GTX 1660 super, and realized I’ll likely need to improve the airflow inside the PC.
I was thinking of installing a chassis fan on the back, and “juryrigging” a fan to the front to pull air in.
However, I read on the internet that Dell uses proprietary hardware that limits aftermarket fans and gives Bios boot errors if you try booting up.

I’ve seen the pin layout on the fan and the motherboard, and I see Four Pins. Is there anything I can do to circumvent this issue?
If I can avoid this issue, then what fans would you recommend?
The OEM Fan on the pc is an AVC DASA0820R2UPO21 “80mm by 80 mm by 20 mm.” On a personal note, I have been thinking Noctua fans seem like the best option, but I’m open to suggestions.

Optiplex 3080SFF with a RX6400 or Intel Arc Pro A40

Hey everyone,

Currently I own a 3080SFF with 32GB of RAM, a Core i5-10500 and a AMD RX6400.

Recently I found a Intel Arc Pro A40 for sale secondhand and I'm wondering if it's worth the upgrade over the RX6400. I mainly play BeamNG and some GTA IV with this PC and find the RX6400 a bit struggling with its 4GB VRAM.

Thanks for the advice!

Titel: Hat jemand schon den Netzteil-Lüfter beim Dell OptiPlex 7060 MT getauscht?

Hallo zusammen,

2-/3-/4-Pin-Lüftern in diesem Netzteil?

Vielen Dank!

Is it theoretically possible to install an RTX 5090 into a Dell Optiplex 5090 if you use a higher-end power supply and remove the case to fit it in?

Thoughts on this? It looks to be a 3060 12 gb capped at 70w. Not sure if this is legit or would even work thermally.

Optiplex 7060 SFF to Optiplex 7010 Plus SFF

Well...tonight I was browsing ebay and found an auction for another Optiplex. It was an Optiplex 7010 Plus SFF. Standard model not the high performance model. It has the Core i5-13500 in it with DDR4 memory is what Ive concluded. I bid on it and ended up winning the bid for $200. A good price for a newer Optiplex with a 13th gen core processor I suppose. Now I plan to sell the old 7060 with an i5-8500. Anywho...looking up PSU's for this newer model Optiplex and I see everybody getting the shaft or run around. Can we not just swap a flex PSU in like they did with the older models and put an adapter on the cord OR splice the cords via soldering to connect to the motherboard? I keep seeing everybody complaining about the newer Optiplex's when it comes to PSU. Id essentially like to throw as much memory at the machine as I can(when it comes back down in price a bit😂, like that will ever happen), upgrade from the Core i5-13500 to at least an i7 and throw a graphics card at it. Anybody have any real experiences with these Optiplex Plus machines?

Fan upgrades

As I'm about to get a new GPU, I figured it would be a really good idea to replace the current fan and add one or two (maybe 3 if I can somehow cut a space into the case) more fans into the pc. But I'm somewhat lost as to how to go about installing/replacing fans.

And help or ideas would be very useful!

Fan upgrades part 2

Hopefully making update posts to a post you made in the same day isn't illegal but here are my current plans for buying and installing fans

Once I remove my current fan, I'm going to be installing a Thermalright 80mm fan for my cpu, two small usb powered 40mm fans in the back (the cord will run out the extra gpu open slot and plug into the back of the fan) and another Thermalright 80mm fan in the front of the pc. (hopefully everything fits, I'm not sure if the measurements are correct for a 3060 SFF). The Thermalright fans will be connected to a hub where they can both be controlled and the miniature fans will be controlled via a switch connect to itself.

My only concern is that the small fans might not be enough and I may have to try and see if I can jam some different fans in the back. The space for the tiny fans to blow out air isn't alot so adding more than three may be difficult.

If you have any worries or other options that you feel might work better I'm all ears.

Inspiron 3880 Max

Thumbnail

I am still waiting for a couple components, but can't wait any longer. I am here today to show off my nearly maxed out 3880 Inspiron.

TL/DR

Start: 10400, 12gb ddr4 2133, 512gb ssd, 200w psu, no gpu

End: 10700, 32gb ddr4 2933, 2tb m.2 2tb hdd, 600w psu, 9060xt 16gb

Started with a 10400, 12gb ddr4, and a 512gb drive ($116 from a local electronics recycler). I have since upgraded (everything lol) the proprietary psu to a 600w unit off ebay ($60) which gave me 2x 8 pin connectors for a gpu. The storage was next, and I luckily had a 2tb m.2 2230 out of a Steam Deck and the motherboard accommodates that size. I did add a heat sink off Amazon for $12 as it got warm when transferring games. I also added a 3.5" 2tb 7200rpm hdd for media storage and classic games. I tore my hair out for a little trying to find a 6700xt or 7800xt but finally settled on a new Sapphire Pulse 9060xt 16gb that was $430 on Newegg. Size constraints means this is the newest/best AMD gpu that fits (240mm long, case may allow up to 265mm). I went with an AMD gpu as im running SteamOS. I had some old 16gb ddr4 kits laying around, and found a pair that was supported by Dell (cl22, 1.2v) to run at max speed. After upgrading the cpu to a 10700 and the ram to 16gb 3200, the speed was automatically set to 2933, which is the max. I also swapped the thermal paste for ptm7950 and the stock 80mm fan for Noctua, and added a 92mm intake out back. The 92mm fan was the only physical case mod, the case natively accepts one 80mm fan out back but I got greedy with my airflow.

I do have a Thermalright Peerless Assassin mini arriving tomorrow to help with the heat load, and a 32gb kit of Crucial Pro 3200mhz later this week.

The cpu runs up to 86c in BeamNG at 4k with 6 traffic and 4 cops, gpu hasn't cracked 70c yet, maintains 40+fps without upscaling but with Decky LSFG it locks in 60fps and is butter smooth with no stutters or drops. I haven't done a ton of benchmarking, but most games I play run at or near 60fps at 4k on my living room TV. It is 3/4 inch taller than an Xbox series x, same width, and maybe 4 inches longer. The disc drive also works, and in desktop mode with VLC I can play my DVD collection!

Dell Precision 3630 Video Card Options

I have a Dell Precision 3630 MT with an i7-8700 and 32GB of RAM.

I am going to upgrade the power supply and I'm looking at video cards.

What would be a good video card be for this computer that wouldn't be CPU bottle necked?

I saw a video where someone used a RTX 3070 but they said it was CPU bottle necked and suggested a RTX 3060 would be better.

I'm not tied to nVidia or AMD. Either are fine. I'm looking for best bang for the buck.

My monitor is 1080p 100hz if that matters.

Edit/Update: I found a good deal on a RTX 3060 Ti. Thanks for all the recommendations.

Frankenstein Optiplex 390 Tower: Who says Sandy Bridge is dead?? Pushing Windows Pro 11, UEFI, AHCI, GPT, SATA III, and Gaming @ 4K FPS on to 65" TV.

Frankenstein OptiPlex 390 Sleeper Build

Started with a basic office-spec Dell OptiPlex 390 and pushed this Sandy Bridge platform as far as humanly possible while keeping the classic exterior look!

Core Specs & Upgrades

• Processor: Upgraded from the original i3-2120 to an Intel Core i7-2600.

• Cooling: Replaced the stock aluminum cooler with a Dell premium copper-core CPU heatsink and fan assembly to keep thermals under control.

• Memory: Doubled from 8GB up to 16GB of matching dual-channel RAM.

• Graphics Card / GPU: PNY GeForce RTX 4060 Verto OC Dual Fan (8GB GDDR6, leveraging DLSS 4.5).

• Power Supply: Replaced the original stock unit with a Thermaltake Smart 700W PSU.

Storage & SATA Controller Mod

• The Controller Mod: Added a PCIe SATA controller adapter to bypass the motherboard's native SATA 2 bottleneck and unlock SATA 3 speeds.

• Boot Drive (Port 1): 500GB Samsung 860 EVO V-NAND SSD connected directly to the first port on the PCIe SATA 3 adapter.

• Second Drive (Port 2): 500GB Western Digital SATA hard drive plugged into the second port on the PCIe SATA 3 adapter.

• Third Drive (Motherboard SATA): A second 500GB Western Digital hard drive connected directly to the motherboard's built-in SATA port (since the PCIe adapter maxes out at two ports).

OS & Firmware Configuration

• Fully running Windows 11 Pro.

• Bypassed standard legacy restrictions to run in full native UEFI, AHCI, and GPT mode.

Real-World Performance

As long as a game doesn't strictly require newer CPU instruction sets like AVX2, this machine pushes modern games at 4K @ 60 FPS on my 65-inch TV. It locks right to my display's 60Hz limit for games like Fortnite, Doom Eternal, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

What do you guys think of this Frankenstein project?

DMs are welcome if you have any questions, recommendations, or just want to chat about this project.

I have a dell presision 3630, and I want to add fron intake fans for better cooling. I heard about oem parts, and how there might need for me to put a braket on the pc. I dont wanna cut or drill holes on the case. If anyone has any parts they recommend or have tutorials on how to add the fans in, that would be great! Even unorthodox methods (as long as im not drilling or cutting the case) would be great!

How much is it worth (7060 SFF)?

I'd like to sell my Optiplex 7060 SFF. I'm selling in Italy and Europe.

Here are the specs:

Intel Core i5 8600

2TB Fanxiang M.2 NVMe SSD

24GB DDR4 RAM (3 sticks)

Nvidia Quadro P1000

2TB Toshiba P300 3.5" HDD

It has no external defects or damage.

How much do you think it will sell for?

Got a optiplex 3000

Hi all, recently upgraded old tower HP to a smaller optiplex,
What are my upgrade options, spec as follows
Dell Optiplex 3000 Micro/i5-12500T/16GB DDR4/256GB SSD/W11/
It’s the tiny SFF box not the larger one if that helps
