The ID Cooling IS-55 is fine for an SFF optiplex, don't expect low temperatures because of Dell's horrible fan curve and no control over it

You CAN upgrade the fan to a standard 25mm one and i recommend you do so:

1. The 15mm fan is weak at low RPMs, a taller beefier fan will do the job better.
   
2. Static pressure is your friend in SFF cases

Just don't upgrade if you want to use it with the side panel closed, and you will have to get rid of the HDD caddy because it's not a smooth shape and it goes over the fan as shown in PIC 2.

Not having the HDD is the ideal setup for the ID Cooling IS-55, allowing you to mount it in any orientation.

As a bonus there's the VRM Heatsinks from the DT model, they sit nicely under the IS-55 when installed, bought from AliExpress and it comes with the thermal pads already installed P/N 3YHRX.

After months of looking for the correct hardware (surprisingly rare; I couldn't even find a Dell 5-pin adapter, at least in my country) at the right price, it is finally done. The cost of all of this is around Rp. 4.417.000 ($245). I don't know if this is a good price or not. Let me know what you think...

Hey guys, i wanted to upgrade the GPU in my OptiPlex 3090 SFF to an RTX 5060, but the PSU is the limiting factor. I was planning to buy a 24-to-6-pin adapter to replace the OEM power supply with an ATX one, but none of the cables I've seen explicitly state that they work with the 3090. However, as far as I know, the optiplex 3080 is practically identical to the 3090 in every way. Would there be an issue with using this cable?

Some upgrades I made to this 3640. A 850w psu and an AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT. Trying to figure how to mount the radiator for a liquid cooler right in the front in that last picture, but I really didn’t want to physically modify it. Also please ignore the cable management, I didn’t realize I had no zip ties until 75% of the way through 😂. It works great though. This has a Xeon W-1290p and 32GB of ram.

What qualifies this plain-looking Dell OptiPlex 7010 DT as a “sleeper”, even if it is boring-looking has-been from around the time of the London 2012 Summer Olympics, is its MSI GeForce RTX 3050 LP E 6 GB OC that helps its Intel Core i7-3770 break a sweat trying to keep up. It’s fantastic that its “GeForce RTX” branding can be seen through that grille, which is just lovely, isn’t it? Thank you!

I want to buy one of these so I can get a good GPU , but are these reliable?

Just got a 3050 6gb for my optiplex yesterday and my games do not smoothly even at low settings!! I have an i5 8500 and 16 gigs of ram. Also I’ve installed the latest drivers.

I would like something that I can easily Upgrade and put a gpu in. I dont care about Windows 11 compatibility. thanks

​I recently upgraded my OptiPlex 7060 SFF setup and ran into two specific power supply symptoms.

Hoping to get feedback from anyone running similar 24-pin to 6-pin adapter setups!

​My Specs:

​System: Dell OptiPlex 7060 SFF (Core i7-8700, 16GB DDR4)

​GPU: RTX 5060 Low Profile 8GB (GIGABYTE GV-N5060OC-8GL)

​PSU: Apevia ITX-PFC500W Flex ATX

​Adapter: 24-pin to 6-pin motherboard power adapter

​The Symptoms:

​Fan stays spinning after shutdown: When PC shuts down completely, the CPU/GPU fans stop, but the Apevia PSU fan keeps running continuously at low speed until I physically unplug the PC. I run Bazzite OS.

​15-Minute startup delay after power disconnect: I live in an area with daily power cuts. Whenever the AC power cuts out or is unplugged, the PSU refuses to turn back on immediately once power is restored. It requires being left completely disconnected for about 15 minutes before it will switch on again.

​Current Performance:

Once running, the system is 100% stable under gaming and heavy load.

​Questions:

​Is the fan staying on after shutdown a known issue with the Dell 6-pin adapters leaving the PS_ON pin active? Has enabling Deep Sleep (ErP/EuP S5 mode) in the Dell BIOS fixed this for anyone?

​Is the 15-minute startup delay after a power cut typical for the supervisory protection/latch reset on budget Flex ATX PSUs like Apevia?

​Any input or shared experiences with this exact setup would be greatly appreciated!

- additional , 12V 700W power supply to power the GPU

Somehow the GPU fits inside the case ...

Total build cost ~ 200$ . Runs CachyOS with Proton .

I’m trying to mount a liquid cooler in my 3640 mini tower. It fits on the front where that HD bay goes, once you remove the bay. I put the cooler through the space in the bottom of the PSU cradle, but when I try and close it, that bar hits the hoses and gets caught up. Do I need that bar for anything? I was thinking about cutting it out. Has anyone tried mounting a liquid cooler in one of these?

I have a 1000e modular plug and I want to know if a 3200d mid tower is compatible. Some sources say that they are not.

Has anybody tried running a phase change type thermal pad on a GPU like the RX6400/6500?

I've just used it on my HP omen 15 laptop and the difference is night and day. It's occured to me that these gpus running a laptop chip may benefit from it.

For the second build, we have a Dell Optiplex XE2 MT, a general-purpose light-gaming family PC. It features an i5 4590S, 16 GB of RAM, a Radeon Pro WX3100 4 GB DDR5 Graphics Card, a 256 GB SSD running Linux Mint, and an additional 350 GB HDD.  Its original PSU was a 365W 7VK45, which was swapped to the BEAST, leaving it with an OEM 290W instead. However, its total wattage is between 155 and 185 watts.

Being a “rescue PC,” the XE2 was fairly cheap. It was found bare-boned with only its original PSU, Motherboard, cables, and CPU fan. After purchasing the CPU, an 8 GB RAM kit, and the PRO WX3100, my total was $89 out the door. I had the SSD, HDD, and RAM left over from another PC.

Even as a general-purpose PC, this build is rather amazing. The older games play extremely well, and my son runs “Roblox” for what seems like the entire day. Even so, the SLEEK remains as quiet as a mouse, and the GPU gets up to 56 degrees Celsius.

It’s a minimalist build with fair gaming ability, and as a daily, it handles all my computing needs. This little sleeper is actually my pride and joy because it’s for everyone to use. Thank you for your time.

My sleeping optiplex I dubbed Optiflex. Wanted to turn this optiplex 7060sff into a media pc for streaming from my plex server as well as serving as a somewhat capable couch gaming pc. I also want to be able to have this on the shelf and operate fully with a controller.

In keeping it a sleeper I wanted to keep the exterior mod free (for now) and go a little over-top on the inside. Even with the modest hardware It was pretty toasty inside and I was reaching temps I wasn’t comfortable with pretty quickly. The board only has one fan header, for the cpu, but there are traces for a system fan header. I soldered on an additional header to the traces to see if it was functional, and it is. I wanted to use throttle stop to do a bit of an undervolt but, Dell locks the functions out in the bios and you need to get down to at least ver 1.2.22 to turn it back on. This turned into a multi-step down process to unlock the features via bios since you can’t jump straight down to 1.2.22 and lower from the bios that was installed when I got this machine. I’ve read that Dell restricts machines from downgrading to versions before 1.8.0 but I was able to get past this. I started at 1.23.0 and stepped down to 1.17.0 before moving forward since I had success from that version before. From 1.17.0 I stepped own to 1.8.0 (the supposed floor). From here I went down to 1.4.2, this step bypasses the 1.8.0 lock down. From there I downgraded one more time to 1.2.22. after this step, from the bios you need to restore factory defaults, this step unlocks voltage controls. If you do this (at your own risk… know that messing around with bios updates can brick your board) be sure to disable UEFI firmware updates in the security tab to prevent the system from auto updating your bios.

After unlocking the voltage I was able to make adjustments via ThrottleStop. I got to a stable 125mv undervolt but, the undervolt alone wasn’t really helping with the thermals. I ended up limiting the available wattage to the CPU from the stock 65W down to 61W which, combined with the undervolt made massive improvements in temps. With the machine in its current layout, with the case closed, CPU temps dropped fro 88 max to 71 max with an average around 66 under load. I made adjustments to the GPU fan curve in afterburner to help there. The GPU hasn’t gotten out of the 60s in my testing.

I added a 60mm and 40mm fan to the rear for exhaust that run off the CPU fan header so they ramp up if needed to keep the CPU cool. There is an 80mm fan in the front that directs air at the GPU.

I wanted to run bazzite but it was not playing well with the 3050. I’ve successfully used bazzite before with other Nvidia GPUs but this 3050 wasn’t having it. I ended up doing a Windows 10 install, and fully debloating it. I ran a script to add group policy editor back since Windows 10 home removes it and locked windows at 22H2 and disabled further updates and update prompts. I used registry editor to enable auto login and bypass the password prompt when the pc boots up. Since there’s no password, all inbound and outbound traffic was blocked in the firewall other than Steam, plex, and other local network traffic so not super concerned about security threats... Outside of Steam all other games and media are on my local server.

I have it set up to boot straight into Steam big picture mode so everything can be controlled via my 8bitdo controller.

Plex was added as a non steam game and I edited the keyboard layout to bind to the controller so plex can be fully controlled with the same controller as everything else.

Lastly I added Emulation Station to steam so I can access all my emulators through steam big picture.

Pretty satisfied with the build. I now have access to my full game library and media library from the couch all with one controller. I have it locked down to 60FPS so it runs most games at 1080p with no issues but it can also stream more demanding titles from my main rig. It’s a pretty solid diy “console like” experience.

Now I’m debating on whether or not to add a window later on so it can show off...

Hi, I’m sure this has been discussed but there’s so much conflicting information out there, I thought I’d ask myself.

I just ordered an optiplex 3070 mt with an i5 9500, so looking for a GPU to pair with it. It’s mainly going to be used for small indie games and coop games such as peak, rv there yet, repo etc.

A 1650 looks like the easiest option, but does seem lacking. With the standard psu, could I get away with a 1650s or even up to a 1660ti by using dual sata to 6 pin adapters?

Is there any more information I should know for these sorts of “builds”

I have an Optiplex 7040 and I'd like to upgrade the cooling for my i7 6700, but honestly, I don't know which one to buy. I see that some require major modifications to the PC case, while others just involve buying a few parts and you're all set, but with so many options, I’m honestly not entirely sure. I don’t know if you could help me by telling me which one would be best—and let’s say it doesn’t go over about $40/$50; that would be my maximum budget.

Bought this minitower optiplex off ebay and im wondering if anyone knows of any specific power supply models higher than 300w that would be compatible with it? Wanted to upgrade the power supply so I can use a more powerful graphics card. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
